Welcome to Volume 24 where I am deducting a star because HALF the book is taken up by Kail and Ramses being stupid and macho and neglecting their IMPORTANT duties. Like I don't know, the WAR THEY STARTED AND SHOULD MAYBE FINISH?
I love that everytime a leader is needed and Yuri is like 'Oh but where will we find one?!' and everyone looks at her and she looks at them and they look at her and she's all flustered and like 'No but wait! I can't!' Except Yuri we know you can because by this volume you've led more successful military campaigns, covert operations and hell rebellions then EVERY CHARACTER COMBINED. That includes Ilbani who is really close as your second.
Also I love that Kail realizes, before Ramses, that higher things are at stake and that Ramses realizes that THAT is what makes Kail a better man. Not his power, not his looks, not the fact Yuri loves him, or his physical strength and battle prowess--Kail realizes more keenly then almost anyone else in this series that emotions have a time and place. Yeah he got swept up for a while, but he didn't let it subsume him.
Also HA! Ramses is like 'well I can't have Yuri so my son will marry her daughter and look how great that will be!' (it actually turns out to be his grandson and her granddaughter, but hey doesn't matter).
While I love Yuri for her defiance of standing up for what she believes in and standing up to those most people wouldn't, I often wonder how a teenage girl from Japan knows so much about battle strategy. I wonder if it is because she really IS a reincarnation of Ishtar. She certainly seems to know a lot about how to lead troops very effectively for someone who has no experience in this.
Overall Rating: 2..../10 I re-read from teenager to grown up. Not the best idea...
This may be my third re-read of this series. I am pretty sure I read it twice in the first two years of it's release. I was young, I loved it. It was romantic. But after reading it this year (maybe +15 years later....), I was wrong. I just saw wrong turns, within wrong turns. Maybe as an adult, you see things differently.
If you,ve read a manga or book during your early years and end up reading them much later in life, you may end up like me- loving a series in the past and ruining it as the adult in you laughs for once enjoying them... :(
Do I recommend this: Unless you are under the age of 20 honestly...
I found this series on a mere coincidence but it quickly became one of my all time favourites. I read the entire series in 1.5-2 days. It was truly wonderful and a joy to experience.
