Meghan, Paige, and Anna-Marie are super excited for the Best. Night. Ever. The sleepover they’re planning is going to be nothing short of EPIC. Not even the last-minute addition of Anna-Marie’s socially awkward, soon-to-be stepsister Veronica can dampen their spirits.
But nothing prepares them for the scene that greets them when they awaken the next morning: the basement is a disaster, Meghan’s left eyebrow has been shaved off and she is somehow in possession of the Class Bad Boy’s signature hoodie, and there’s a slew of baby chicks in the bathtub! Worst of all, Anna-Marie is missing!
Trouble is, none of them can remember anything beyond the hypnotism trick performed by the two-bit magician Veronica arranged in an effort to impress the other girls. Now, as the clock is ticking and the clues continue to get weirder, the remaining girls must figure out exactly what happened the night before. Can they find Anna-Marie and pull off the ultimate save-face before parent pick-up time?
I once spent a year traveling the world solo from Nepal to Romania to Fiji, where I learned 99.9% of humanity is pretty freaking awesome yet somehow doesn't share my love of ice cubes in a drink. I met my husband on the highway, literally. In fact our meet-cute was SO cute we had a whole story written about it in Ladies Home Journal. My twin boys placed second in the Most Identical contest at the International Festival of Twins. Their little sister placed first in the most adorable contest at the All The People In Our Living Room Festival. I once accompanied a pajama-clad Oprah Winfrey (and her puppies) through the laundry room of the Four Seasons. I have also been in a hotel room alone with a shirtless Mark Wahlberg. In both those instances, it was not what you think. Oh, and I went into early labor while on Stevie Nicks' tour bus. That is pretty much what you think.
Here's the more official bio: Jen Malone writes fun and flirty YA travel romances with HarperCollins and humorous "girl power" MG adventures with Simon & Schuster. She once spent a year traveling the world solo, met her husband on the highway (literally), and went into labor with her identical twins while on a rock star's tour bus. These days she saves the drama for her books. You can learn more about Jen and her books at www.jenmalonewrites.com. Find her on Twitter and Instagram @jenmalonewrites.
Every so often I read a book before it comes out, and I can't wait til it's released to the world so everyone else can read it, too! THE SLEEPOVER is one of those books. Meghan has no idea that her sleepover party will end in shaved eyebrows, baby chicks, and missing guests. Add in complicated family relationships, friendships, and tween crushes, and there's something here that everyone can relate to. The antics and adventures in this absolutely amusing middle grade novel will appeal to kids from ages 8-98.
I thought this was a funny and interesting book, but all that the book was leading to had the most strange outcome. I didn't really like how the author ended the part were they found Anna marie. but it was an overall good book.:|
I'm warning you now. This book HURTS. Seriously, I laughed so much and for so long I wasn't sure what was aching more: my sides or my throat.
But I won't lie...
It was totally worth it. A little herbal tea and a heating pad later and I was good as new. And that's wonderful because I couldn't wait to start telling people about the pure LOLability of this book. How these girls get thrown into the most wild and totally weird after-party morning of their lives and have to retrace every step to put the pieces together, figure out how everything went wrong, and find their missing friend. The pace stays fantastically frenzied as they race against the clock making this book one incredibly fun page turner.
Sleepover hits the mark on what many young tweens enjoy most, girl drama! This story takes thisup to the next level, it almost reads itself! Twelve-year-old Meghan goes to a a sleepover with her two best friends, Paige and Anna Marie, the birthday girl. These three friends each have very different families. Meghan, the narrator of the story, is an only child with strict parents, she has never managed to survive a whole overnight away from them. Her "ladybug" cell phone comes with only two available phone numbers, her home phone number, and 911. Paige has siblings much older than herself, and is allowed to do whatever she wants. She hears lots of enlightening conversation from her college and high school siblings, as a result very little phases her. Anna Marie has a pesky little ten-year-old brother and is about to have a stepsister, when her father remarries. The soon to be stepsister's name is Veronica, she's homeschooled and the most fascinating character in the story, because of her completely original and unusual responses. Her comments are construed as awkward and embarrassing by the three friends. On Anna Marie's thirteenth birthday party, which all the girls predict will be EPIC , Veronica's gift arrives first. She gives Anna Marie and her friends a visit from Madame Mesmer, a hypnotist. Dressed as a gypsy, Madame Mesmer decorates the cellar with atmospheric scarves, and explains that she will hypnotize them. The girls eagerly agree, and she does. What happens next is a roller coaster ride of shocks, scares and surprises. Until almost the end, it is impossible to predict if the girls will come out of the party unscathed. Pure fun, adventure, and mystery, thrill seeking tweens will find this story impossible to put down.
This book is basically everything I ever wanted in a sleepover as a kid (well, minus the forgetting stuff part): baby chicks, outrageous pranks, a giant hedgehog, and of course, a cute boy. So funny and it'll keep you guessing, too!
This book is just like the movie The Hangover. It's hilarious. Kids will love it.
It's Anne Marie's birthday and she's having a sleepover. Meghan is anxious because she always ends up wanting to go home. Paige wants this to be the most epic sleepover ever. Veronica, Anne Marie's weird, soon-to-be stepsister sets the "epic" ball rolling when she invites a hypnotist to the party. The girls are put into a hypnotic state and the next thing they know it's morning. Meghan is missing one eyebrow, there's a bunch of baby ducks in the bathtub, the basement is a mess, and Anne Marie is missing. No one can remember anything. They must piece together clues to figure out what the heck they were doing all night and what happened to Anne Marie.
This one is a no brainer. Tween girls will love it. A must for every library.
Meghan, Paige, and Anne-Marie are super excited for Anne-Marie's birthday sleepover. They have promised each other it will be epic. But then Anne-Marie's soon-to-be-stepsister is forced upon them as another member of the sleepover and the girls are worried that socially awkward Veronica will ruin everything. The night doesn't seem to go too badly, but Meghan wakes up the next day to discover she can't remember whether the night was epic or not. She doesn't remember anything after the hypnotist Veronica hired as a birthday gift told them to relax. But something obviously happened last night because the room is a disaster area, Meghan is missing an eyebrow, there's a strange hat in the room, plus the sketchy neighbor boy's sweatshirt. There are 16 chicks in the bathtub. And worst of all, the birthday girl is nowhere to be found. And no one remembers anything. Can they find Anne-Marie before her mom finds out she's missing?
This is a pretty humorous little mystery, with rather memorable characters, and one madcap string of events. You can tell Jen Malone had fun imagining what tween girls would do under hypnotism in a quest to have an epic sleepover. Nothing is too crazy. The worst they do is sneak into their school to return something and lie to their principal on the way out to avoid punishment for what they don't even remember doing. Things are wacky, but none of them are ever in any danger. Funny, lighthearted fun I can totally see being made into a movie that would gain a cult following. Nothing in here is really easy to replicate so it won't give anyone devious ideas either. And I really liked how the girls learned to appreciate Veronica despite her awkwardness and admire how secure she is in herself. Recommended to contemporary humor fans.
Notes on content: No language issues. No sexual content beyond a little pinky touch of a guy and girl who like each other. The girls are being a bit sneaky trying to figure out what happened and make things right before they get in trouble, but they also do rectify all the wrongs it seems they did. Because of some of these gray areas this may be better with middle schooler readers who can understand it as descriptive for fun and not really prescriptive advice. Overall, the girls take away positive lessons from the wacky tale.
Intensely fun book alert for tweens and adults alike: Think alcohol-free M&M/hypnotism fueled tween version of The Hangover. Truly delightful, and I don't even especially lean towards contemporary stuff. Cover doesn't do clever slightly dark hilarious well-crafted story justice! Veronica was THE BEST!
This MG spin on The Hangover (hypnotist!) is super fun and creative. The characters are fully drawn, the writing is smart and full of great humor. I laughed out loud while reading many times. Themes of friendship are strong, and this is perfect for tween girls especially!
A bunch of drama, mystery, and mischief all caused by one 12 year old boy. One of the best books I have ever read. 3 12 year old girls, and the cute boy next door, all trying to find there friend before parent pickup time.
This book was absolutely amazing. It was everything a teenage book could ask for. Lots of mysteries, friendships, and a little bit of romance along the way....
Meghan is beyond excited to go to her best friend Anna Marie's birthday sleepover. It's going to be EPIC, even if her weird almost-stepsister Veronica is going to be there. But Meghan and her friends' opinions begin to change when a hypnotist that Veronica hired arrives to give the girls an unforgettable experience... problem is, when they wake up the next day, none of them can remember what happened! Meghan only has one eyebrow and is somehow in posession of the school bad boy's sweatshirt! There are baby chicks in the bathtub, the basement is trashed, and Anna Marie is missing! With the help of the bad boy Jake, the three remaining girls piece together what happened the night before and resolve to try and fix everything before their parents show up!
As with the other books I've read by Jen Malone, this one was hilarious and well-written! I loved the characters, particularly Meghan because I felt like I could really relate to her. Also, the antics that these four get into are hilarious! A must-read for any middle school girl like Meghan who is just longing to feel a little less protected. Also for anyone who loves a lighthearted mystery or a story about a friend group with a great dynamic.
I am a fan of this author; I think she does a great job of thinking up characters and plots that will really appeal to kids. Her books don't try to be literature, think instead the Lindsey Lohan version of Freaky Friday. This iteration however made me uncomfortable. It is the Hangover for the sleepover set, complete with the awkward, odd and goofy Zach Galifianakis character (soon to be step-sister Veronica) who is regularly dissed by the super popular and perfect friend (Paige) and patronized by the timid good-girl friend Meghan - our hero. There is a lot of John Hughes here, which is entertaining, but also occasionally cringe-worthy - "Nothing bad ever happens in the suburbs." My 13 year old self could have totally identified with that sentiment and wished I could have 'epic' adventures like breaking into the school to steal the science ducklings or filch the rival teams hedgehog mascot float. But reading this during waves of Black-lives matter protests and rising urban death counts diminished the charm. I also cringed a bit at the relentless and utterly unrealistic budding romance with the hot, misunderstood, bad boy neighbor. Would I have loved it as a kid? Yup!
I loved this book! Meagan is so excited for her first sleepover with her two best friends! But when they wake up and don’t remember anything that happened last night and there’s a bunch of clues with no answers attached? Her and best friend(and her weird other best friends step-sister) are in for a wild ride! I loved this book so much and it was a great read!
This book was amazing! I loved it so much! So many cliffhangers and suspense! I loved every minute I read! Definitely recommend, great for buddy reading with a friend!
I read this just in case my daughter required assistance with her novel study for her at home learning because of covid. It was a great story! The suspense and characters were a joy to the very end.
