This was such an absorbing little dive into the strange. It feels like wandering through someone’s personal collection of oddities and hidden corners, and the way each piece of art is paired with a short reflection works really well. The artwork is honestly my favorite part. There’s so much variety, and a lot of it was completely new to me, which made the whole thing even more fun to move through.
A few sections were less interesting for me, but honestly the unevenness weirdly works here. It’s a book you drift through, picking up bits of history, weird facts, and unexpected connections along the way. I enjoyed learning new things while also just soaking in the visuals.
I wanted a little more depth in a few places, but overall it’s a beautifully curated look at the uncanny and the offbeat, and I really enjoyed it.

A welcome inoculation in a time foolishly obsessed with AI, The Art of the Unknown causes its readers to slow and appreciate human artists on the edges of perception and talented humans like S. Elizabeth who write so engagingly about them. When everything feels liminal and tenuous, S. Elizabeth takes your hand through that weird door you never noticed before, encountering artists familiar, obscure, and emerging whose work she describes with more intrigue and humor than one typically expects from art books. My personal favorite installment of an excellent series.

S. Elizabeth has once again collected and extrapolated on the visual musings of those artists at the edges of the human experience. Her writing begins by drawing the reader into the black hole that is irrefutable truth; to warp, bend and wobble the mind past hard boundaries toward mystery and curiosity. S Elizabeth is a purveyor of the cosmic unknown, walking you through the present moment of grappling with what is beyond words that has been expressed through synesthetic art throughout the-ages. Philosophical and poetic language lead you along a beautiful meandering path through stunning images of artworks stratifying themes as well as physical dimensions; including painting, sculpture and photography. If you are a lover of patterns, niche culture and the confluence of science, alchemy, art and creative writing this book demands a space on your coveted at home library shelf.

That which we don’t know can be the most engaging…also you don’t always have to understand art to appreciate how wonderful it is….
The Art of the Unknown: A Visual Treasury of the Esoteric, Uncanny and Unexplained by S. Elizabeth is the latest in the artistic coffee table books that are equal parts art history and thought experiment on human development…
Because of the varied subject matter that “the unknown” can mean…let me further enlighten you…
The afterlife…space…the rules of the cosmos…what lies beyond…so many things we don’t truly understand and may never know until we pass on to the next life…
It’s no surprises that such subjects capture the hearts and minds of artists from around the world and throughout human history…as they capture their perception of the unknown on canvas, in sculpture, or in other mixed media…
The afterlife…the human concepts of heaven and hell…or just a catch all “underworld”…drawn from multiple human cultures makes up a decent section of the book. It draws from both religious symbology and world mythology.
Meanwhile the unknown can also mean the unexplored as dark caves, underwater wonders, and the majesty of unseen worlds beyond our globe are depicted with equal grace and beauty…
Entering the realm of science (in theory the best way to quality and measure reality in some situations), there are a healthy amount of pieces dealing with alchemy and other pseudoscience…and how they were depicted at different periods of human existence.
With dozens of works of art covered through this fine volume, each item recovers a sizable epitaph to cover their cultural provenance and interest…and the index at the back provides further context for those interested in continuing their journey of art appreciation…

This is my favorite book in this series thus far! The Art of the Unknown is a candle in the dark, illuminating the weird and wondrous mysteries of existence that artists throughout time have sought to explore and embody in their work. S. Elizabeth’s wise and otherworldly words are a haunting presence unto themselves, guiding us through chthonic, celestial, and physical realms as we encounter the uncanny. Every page of this strange and stunning book cracks the doors of perception and reminds us that when faced with life’s eternal questions, art is more powerful than answers.
