The Celestial Council has accused the Underworld of murdering two archangels and Alena is their prime suspect.

To clear her name, she’s forced to accept the Council’s worst idea letting Thanatos—the infuriatingly attractive God of Death—shadow her every step. But the longer he stalks the halls of her realm, the more he dismantles her composure… and everything she thought she believed in.

While Alena fights for her freedom, Vasacardi is perfectly content torturing the damned, until pressure from Alena forces him to hunt down the real killer. His investigation leads him straight into the arms of the God of Love, a celestial trickster Vasacardi is convinced has enchanted him… or worse, exposed the truth he refuses to face.

As Alena spends more time with Thanatos, she begins to trickle into unknown territory that has her questioning everything she knows about the universe. Now she must determine whether her heart is a weapon…or the reason the universe collapses.

I had serious high hopes going into this one because I loved the first one and I am so glad I did because this book was amazing!!

Avarice is set 100 years ahead of Morebris and I think that was perfectly done, I loved how it tied it all together and filled in the gaps of the first. It was paced and written so beautifully!

The story follows Alena, Thanatos and of course her best friend Vasacardi as they try to figure out a mystery in the underworld and I could not put this book down, just like the first.

The way this story had me hooked and desperate to know what would happen next is just amazing, the character development, emotional depth and the detail to each character was in my opinion absolutely perfect.

The slow burn, tension and forced proximity in this was seriously top tier, the setting of the story is gothic, atmospheric and truly captivating!

If you love demons, murder mystery, slow burn, found family and a good time you need to add this one as well as Morebris to your tbr!!

I highly recommend reading Morebris first like how i did because the way it all comes together is amazing and truly top tier reading!!

Releasing in just one week!! perfect time for you to read Morebris in preparation for Avarice to be released!!

I loved getting the backstory to the events of Morebris and really enjoyed how the mystery keeps going even after reading the two books. I’m really looking forward to finding out what happens next and spending some more time with these characters. While certainly flawed in different ways, Alena and Vasacardi are very likeable and dare I say relatable! I enjoyed reading how Alena dealt with the situation and tried her best with what she had and how those around her also dealt with the situation. I ESPECIALLY loved the yearning between Alena and Thanatos and I really hope we get more of it in the next book. While it did feel like their feelings moved quickly, it actually makes sense in the story and I’m sure that this will become even more obvious in the next book. I’m also excited to see the dynamic between Aegnus and Vasacardi and how Max’s story develops, too, in the next one. Overall, I hope that we get more of Vasacardi because it feels like we didn’t get much of him in this book compared to the first one, but I can see why we focused a bit more on Alena in this one. I also know this is a personal preference but I had hoped this was a bit more open door because it would have fitted the dynamic between Thanatos and Alena so much more! Still, this didn’t take away from their tension. Anyway, so, WHEN IS THE NEXT ONE PLEASE?!

Thank you to WhimsyWords PR and S.M. Carpenter for the ARC in exchange for an honest review ✨

4.5 stars rounded up to 5.

Just a quick disclaimer: I’ve not read Morebris yet. I saw that this was a prequel and so I applied and was gifted an ARC through Whimsy Words PR and it did not disappoint.

It’s full of demons, angels, gods, a slowburn love story, and a sense of family which you can never beat. This follows the story of Alena, who is Queen of the Underworld, and Thanatos, God of Death, who join forces to try and find out who is committing the murders of angels, while also dealing with their feelings for each other.

I am excited to read Morebris since if it is anything like this, it will be good.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Set 100 years before the events in Morebris, Avarice introduces you to the start of Alena and Thantos story. Filled with humour, tension, great characters and an elusive plot, its hard not to love this book.

“I will not be a temptation to you, Thanatos. If you want me, you have to want every part of me. I am not ashamed to be a demon—far from it. If your reputation means so much to you—”

It's so hard not to love any of the characters in this book, there is so many traits in all of them that just makes them so lovable. The storyline is so thought out, the twists and turns this book takes is amazing, the relationship between Thanatos and Alena is phenomenal, no matter how hard they thought it was impossible to deny.

I am completely obsessed with Alena and Thanatos!!!! The premise of this book was so much fun and I love that it was set 100 years before Morebris because it filled in so many gaps!!! The mystery was so amazing and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.

I absolutely loved book one and book two did not disappoint. This book was devoured in just two days which is rare for me. With its gothic vibes, spectacular world building and characters you can't help but fall in love with, I was hooked right from the very beginning. I'm not normally a huge fan of prequels but this was utterly amazing.

Set 100 years before Morebris Alena is sat on her throne as Queen of the Underworld and Thanatos is a thorn in her side. But they are forced to team up to unravel the mystery of dead angels that the Celestial Council seem to hold Alena accountable for. While working to unravel the threads of this mystery, they try and deny their attraction for one another. An attraction that if they give in to could spark a war.

This book answers so many questions about the characters and events that develop with the ending of the previous book. And we get to know so much more about all the characters in this one. I especially loved getting to see Alena as the bad ass queen of the Underworld. Her character in Morebris was fantastic but in this book she was the 'picture of reality and destruction'. And Vas was his sassy self all the way through, just how we love him. I went feral for the slow burn between Alena and Thanatos, and cried at the heartbreak they endure to. I just want the two of them to live happily ever after. But this is no fair tale. This is a gothic masterpiece, so we will have to see where S.M. Carpenter takes their story next.

Thank you to the author for giving me an Advanced copy of this in return for an honest opinion.

I went into this with high expectations after finishing Morebris, and Avarice exceeded every single one of them. I genuinely had such a good time reading this.

S.M. Carpenter’s characters are endlessly loveable, and the development we get in Avarice is truly chef’s kiss. Every interaction feels purposeful, and the emotional depth and character development just keeps building.

The standout character for me this time was Alena, our badass FMC. We learn so much more about her on a deeper level. She’s confident, funny, a little cheeky, and such a refreshing presence on the page. An honourable mention, as always, goes to Vasacardi, who never failed to make me laugh time and time again.

We also get deeper insight into the other Knights of Hell and the surrounding realms, which only made me more excited to see where their stories head in book three.

~ Minor / low-key major spoiler warning ~
The love stories between Alena and Thanatos, and Vasacardi and Aengus, were absolutely soul-wrenching. I genuinely need book three right now because I am desperate to see them all reunited.

Overall, Avarice is a powerful, emotionally charged sequel that expands the world beautifully while deepening the connections to its characters. It left me aching, hopeful, and counting down the days until the next installment. If you loved Morebris, this one will absolutely wreck you (in the best possible way).

Avarice is the second book in the series and serves as a prequel to Morebris, set 100 years before the events of the first novel. Returning to this world felt like coming home, but with the added thrill of finally uncovering answers to questions that were quietly seeded throughout Morebris.

Alena and Vasacardi continue to be incredibly well-written, compelling characters, and I found myself just as emotionally invested in their journeys here as I was before. Their dynamic is rich, layered, and completely believable, making every chapter with them a pleasure to read.

Thanatos was once again a standout favourite. Every scene between him and Alena was captivating, filled with tension, intrigue, and moments that were impossible not to savour.

The writing is engaging and clear throughout. At no point did I feel lost in the world or the plot, despite the depth of the lore. The mystery at the heart of the story is brilliantly handled, with just enough intrigue to keep you constantly turning the pages to uncover what’s really happening.

I genuinely struggled to put this book down. If you love mystery woven into gothic fantasy, this delivers beautifully.

I received an ARC copy of this book, and this is my honest review.

I strongly recommend Avarice, and if you loved Morebris, you will absolutely not be disappointed.

Avarice is the second book in the series, Morebris is the first. This book is a gothic romance and it takes place in the underworld. Here we are taken 100 year back from where Morebris left us. And the Celestial Council has accused the Underworld for the murder of two archangels. Alena i now forced to let the God of Death, (the very handsome and broody) Thanatos, enter her world to undergo an investigation where she will try to clear her name. But this forced proximity to a man she can't stand and the many mysterious deaths brings Alena to loose her composure.
And while all of this is going on, Vasacardi finds himself deeply drawn to God of Love, and is soon realizing he can't stop thinking of Aengus.

This book had me from the first chapter to the end. This book is filled with so much tension, love, found family, trust, power, twists, beauty, amazing world and beautifully written character. The chapters are short and perfect, the chapter art will come when the book releases (and it was stunning in the first book) and I am utterly in love with series.

So if you love a gothic romance with demons, vampires, angels, god of death, found family, brooding, forced proximity, forbidden love and touch her and die (literally) this book is for you!

I didn’t expect the God of Death to make me this frustrated… or this obsessed.

Avarice by S.M. Carpenter (Book 2 in the series) throws you into celestial politics, murder accusations, and a slow burn that truly lives up to its name.
Alena is accused by the Celestial Council of murdering two archangels and is forced to let Thanatos—the infuriatingly attractive God of Death—shadow her every move to clear her name. Meanwhile, Vasacardi hunts the real killer, only to find himself tangled with the God of Love. As tensions rise, Alena begins questioning whether her heart is a weapon… or the universe’s downfall.

This is a true slow burn. I love tension, but I’ll admit I started getting impatient waiting for the payoff. The chemistry between Alena and Thanatos is fire and frustration in the best way.
Thanatos is a solid Level 4 MMC (touch her and die), with strong Level 5 potential (burn the world down for her). Protective, intense, and dangerously controlled.

I didn’t read book one, so I felt like I was missing a little context—but it didn’t stop me from enjoying the story. This is a high tension, low spice, slow-burning divine chess match where love might be the most dangerous force of all.

First book of the year that l've had to process after reading.

It's that good guys. I had tears in my eyes, all the girl power feels of "Yes Alena" I was sad and lost.
Most of all I was "how could you "to the author.

So remember when Alena was human and Vas was a mere vampire....yeahhh scrap that.

Avarice is the prequal to Morebris. Questions you didn't know you needed to ask get answered.
I'm not sure how SM Carpenters brain works but I love it.
Avarice introduces us to new characters (the 7 deadly sin Demons) and previous characters from Morebris. The world building and scene setting is exactly how it should be...easy to imagine and immersive.

This is yearning and slowburn love and it's incredible.
This is giving your all to save the others
This is "omfg what!!"
This is " I never saw that coming"
This is the Underworld where there's no rules
This is *sigh!!!

If you love slow burn
Dark underworld setting
Gods, demons and vampires
Badass FMC
A moody MMC
then Avarice is for you but seriously read Morebris first it's on KU

I feel so lucky to have been chosen yet again to receive an ARC from the brilliant SMCARPENTER! Avarice was, get again and as expected, an absolutely amazing read! 🥲🙌🏻

MOREBRIS was one of my favourite reads last year and book two has just gone and made it even better! 🥹

Avarice is the back story to how Alena and Vasacardi came to be who they are and what a backstory it is!

The one thing I wanted from MOREBRIS was to understand the situation better and Avarice has given me all the answers I needed and more 🤌🏻

Book 1 - MOREBRIS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (available now!)

Book 2 - AVARICE ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (available from the 29th January!!)

A true fantasy read that proves just how far lovers will go to protect the ones they love 🫶🏻✨

I received an advanced readers copy of the book but these are my opinions only. It did release today so get your copy now.

I had not read book 1 and didn’t realize there was one at first because wasn’t familiar with the author. I love fantasy so right up my alley. Then when got into it and hear the same God names from other books out there, it helps to relate to Thanatos.

I enjoyed the part that Alena is head of the underworld and all the different dominions that she rules over and each segment is a different type of demon lord basically. The banter between her and Thanatos kept me reading.

It is a slow burn, mention of angels, demons, gods so if you like that then you will enjoy this book and want to add it to your TBR.

I read Book 1 and I really was excited to get in to Book 2. I had such high hopes for this one as I devoured Morebris and this did not disappoint at all! I was hooked from the beginning through to the end. The story had me engaged the whole time and it is such a great story to follow. I really wanted Alena & Thanatos’s relationship explored more and I was kicking my feet and giggling at certain points in this book 🙈 I also loved how we got to go more in depth with the other characters and it was really interesting learning more about them.

Thank you again for the opportunity to read this, I’m not going to forget this one for a while! 🖤

ARC!

Set 100 years before Morebris, this prequel takes us back to discover the origin stories of Alena, Vas, and Thanatos.

Just as engaging as book one, it flows beautifully while adding depth and clarity to events and details from Morebris. Everything clicks into place in such a satisfying way.

I wouldn’t wait too long to read this after finishing Morebris — having everything fresh in your mind really enhances the experience.

With magic, mystery, a compelling storyline, an unusual love interest, and a strong FMC who consistently puts others before herself, this story had me completely invested.

I truly hope there’s a book three 🤞✨

Avarice is set 100 years before Morebris and answers so many questions!

It explores the events that lead up to Morebris amongst other things that I don’t wish to spoil 🙊🖤

- Enemies to Lovers ⚔️
- Grumpy x Sunshine ☀️
- Forbidden Love 💔
- Touch her & 💀
- Forced Proximity 🥊

Avarice had me sucked in from the get go and at times had me shaking my Kindle and messaging S.M Carpenter at silly hours 😂🖤

I loved how it explored Alena & Thanatos’s relationship but also Vas’s and Aengus’s 🥹

The slow burn and tension was just * chef’s kiss *

This was a great follow up from Morebris and I cannot wait to read what happens next!!!

This was a 3.75 stars for me.

I think sometimes when people say a rating of less than four, they think that’s bad but that is not by no means the case here.

This book is almost like a prequel to the first book Morebris which I highly recommend reading first. For me Morebris didn’t quite hit spot where as I found this one a lot easier to get into and it definitely filled in a lot of gaps that were left from book one.

We also not only get to meet old characters from book one but also get to meet some new ones as well.

Alena is a strong badass FMC and Vasacardi I just find so funny I love him. I also love Thanatos and the relationship between him and Alena

I devoured this book in only a couple of days. I loved Morebris and this second book explains so much more about the characters and storyline. We delve deeper in to some of the key characters from Morebris and are also introduced to others - all of whom I love.

The complex, slow yearning, forbidden love between the two MCs is really well written and keeps you hanging. There is also a side character love interest which I am also dying to hear more about.

Personally, I found myself questioning why the FMC was granted such loyalty from her inner circle when some of their actions in this book were questionable. This is one bit of background I would have loved to have heard more about… maybe in the next book?

Please note I received an ARC of this book and provide this review voluntarily.

Gosh this book was a joy, learning the background that fits into the first book was just *chefs kiss*. How Thantos and Alena came to be, not forgetting all the other scandals and drama that happened!

The descriptions throughout the book are just exquisite. Also who doesn't appreciate places being decorated with skulls 💀

It brings in some almost paranormal crime/thriller vibes which I'm here for and Max as always giving the comic relief but also don't mess with my sister big brother.

Also will we get to see Vasacardi find love...

Fantastically written book I couldn't put it down and devoured within a day.

Just when I thought I knew where this book was going SM Carpenter has done it again!! ehold! This book is a prequel and tells Alena and Vasacardi’s story prior to the events of Morebris. This book has shocks and twists that make you way to read this book in one sitting. It was fast paced, I love the side characters and the found family element of the story. It’s gothic fantasy romance with tension and yearning, angels, demons, the underworld and of course Thanatos😍
what more could you want in a book? 🖤🖤

Avarice is a tense, character-driven story that explores ambition, desire, and the cost of wanting more than you should. S.M. Carpenter leans into psychological tension, showing how obsession, power, and emotional hunger can blur moral lines.

The strength of the book lies in its layered characters — no one feels purely good or evil. Motivations are messy, decisions have consequences, and the emotional undercurrent gives weight to the drama. The atmosphere stays heavy and immersive, making the story feel intense without relying on constant action.

A compelling read for fans of morally gray characters, emotional conflict, and darker, introspective fiction.

Thank you Whimsywordspr.

I really enjoyed this prequel to Morebris. Avarice is set 100 years before the events of Morebris, and it was fascinating to uncover the backstories of Vasacardi and Alena. It’s impossible not to fall in love with the characters—their distinct personalities make each of them feel vibrant and deeply likeable.

The writing style is smooth and engaging, never confusing, and the plot twists are perfectly crafted. The relationship between Thanatos and Alena is pure perfection; their connection is undeniable from start to finish.

This is such a fun world and I was so excited to jump back in. Avarice is a prequel to Morebris set 100 years prior and gives some much needed context as to how the characters ended up where they are in Morebris. We got to know the characters even more and find out exactly what happened to set off the chain of events in book one.
Now that we’re all up to date on everyone’s backstory I am super looking forward to continuing the series with book 3, especially after the way that Morebris ended!

This was the prequel I didn't know I needed! This was a great fun read and answered so many thoughts/questions I had after reading Morebris and even those I didn't know I had!

Carpenter has done a great job weaving the backstory into reality and what has been revealed left me mouth opened with surprise! I love books that keep me on my toes and this was one if them.

I love the characters even more now and really enjoyed seeing Thanatos and Alena's relationship blossom... Thanatos is still my fav 😍

“I would find you in every lifetime.”

Avarice is forbidden love done in the very best way … slow burn tension and forced proximity that makes your heart truly ache for the characters 💔.

It’s a gentle start, but quickly picks up pace and finishes with a bang 💥 … and no, not the sort of left field ending that just feels confusing for the sake of it, but one that simultaneously answers so many questions from the first book (Morebris) and still leaves you reeling and desperate for more.

I am so grateful to have been given an arc of this! I love that this was set 100 years before it all happened to show how we got to the first book, it was a unique way to set out this series and I enjoyed that it was different to every other fantasy.

"I would find you in every lifetime"

Averice by SM Carpenter

If you love longing , the slow burn and the yearn.... This is the book for you. I could not put this one down !

This is Book 2 in the series , and works as a prequel to story 1 (make sure to read the books in order though) . We get to watch the relationship between Alena and Thanatos unfurl and it is torture (and I am here for it).

Vasacardi is my favourite MMC of 2026 so far. He's like everyones annoying little brother but with a heart of gold underneath - he gives me full Carrion Swift Vibes !

Tropes
- Found Family
- Forbidden Love
- Vampires
- Shadow Daddy
- Meddling Gods

Highlights

- Slow burn is turtourous (in the best way)
- Vascaradi's smart mouth

Overall 5/5
Can't wait for the rest of the series!

Also , this has been given the gold 🥇 by my reading partner lily 🐈‍⬛

I read this as an ARC.

It’s such a good premise! I quite enjoy Death as a character both in this book and generally. It got off to a slow start though, for me, with too much bickering and eye rolling and not enough clues and investigation. The last quarter or so of it, especially the last few chapters: BAM! Wow! I am now curious to see how the next book will play out.

I had zero expectations starting this ARC, having not read Morebris or any fantasy novels before. But this book blew me away! I fell in love with the characters and the plot twist was incredible. The ending has me eagerly anticipating what's next. I'll definitely be reading Morebris ASAP - I'm not ready to let go of these characters just yet!
