Kate and Aria have never met—but their lives are tied together by the same man.
In search of a fresh start, Kate Roberts fled California after a failed relationship. She believes she's finally found what she’s looking for in Ryan Langford—a man who seems to admire her fire, her fierce independence, and her easygoing, upbeat energy. But beneath his charm lies a dark web of secrets and control. Before long, Ryan has dismantled the very parts of Kate she had once cherished, leaving her unsure of the woman she has become. When Ryan is suddenly arrested and sent to prison, it’s the escape Kate didn’t know she was waiting for.
After his release, Ryan begins searching for his next conquest. Enter Aria Cassidy—quiet, disciplined, and devoted to her dream of studying ballet in Paris. To her, Ryan appears to be everything she’s ever loving, hardworking, the man she imagines raising children with. But his mask soon slips. Slowly and methodically, Ryan erodes her confidence, dimming her spark until she barely recognizes herself. It takes years and every ounce of courage for Aria to walk away.
Years later, a chance encounter brings Kate and Aria together. What begins as a casual conversation turns into a moment of shocking they were both married to the same man. The discovery ignites more than disbelief—it forges a powerful connection rooted in validation and shared survival. As they unravel the manipulation, isolation, and pain they endured, Kate and Aria begin reclaiming their voices—and their lives.
Through laughter, grief, and late-night confessions, their friendship becomes a lifeline and proof that healing doesn’t happen alone. The Way You Lie is a gripping novel about surviving abuse, rediscovering self-worth, and the profound transformation that comes when women stand beside each other in the aftermath. This isn’t a love story—at least, not the one you’re expecting.
Thank you so much for being here! My novel The Way You Lie is based off of a true story between my best friend and I. Welcome to a chapter of my life that was both hard and therapeutic to write- I hope you find comfort in the pages.
Kennedy Baker reached out a few months ago and asked if I’d like to read and review her upcoming debut novel, The Way You Lie. I wasn't familiar with her, so I immediately went to her IG page to see if it looked like something I’d be interested in. I found Kennedy’s reel where she introduced herself and the premise of the book. I was immediately sucked in and said yes. I flew through the book and my jaw was on the floor the entire time. Guys - this insane story is based on her real life experience and how she turned her pain into power. Check for trigger warnings and look for the most incredible story of friendship.
Synopsis: Kate and Aria were both married to the same man. His toxic, gaslighting behavior isolated them from their family and friends and separated them from their dreams and passions. Through time and strength, both Kate and Aria reclaimed their voices and their lives. And through a chance encounter, their paths cross and an immediate friendship and forever bond is created.
Thank you to the author for the advanced readers copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
WOW! What a powerful story about two women who, though seemingly different on paper, share a profound empathy at their core. This narrative is an evocative exploration of the dangerous side of love when a broken man manipulates a woman's affection to destroy her spirit.
Kate, a free spirit shaped by a loving yet controlling upbringing, often finds herself making impulsive decisions in matters of the heart. Her relationship with Ryan; a love that is possessive and calculated ignites a fire within her that she didn’t know she craved. Aria, on the other hand, is career driven and channels her emotions through ballet, painting, and baking. While she is more reserved and always prioritizes others, she, too, finds herself drawn to Ryan's intoxicating charm, which makes her feel seen and valued.
The beauty of this story lies in its raw and honest portrayal of both women’s journeys through love and heartbreak with the same man. The author bravely highlights themes of love bombing, gaslighting, physical abuse, and manipulation. Delving deep into experiences that many survivors can resonate with; feelings of isolation, self-blame, depression, and a diminishing sense of self-worth.
What makes this story truly remarkable is the sisterhood that blossoms from their shared pain. Their journey toward reclaiming a life they love provides the best kind of happy ending any reader could hope for. The collective resilience of Kate and Aria serves as an empowering reminder of the strength found in community and healing.
Kennedy Baker’s writing style is wonderfully conversational, making readers feel as though they are sitting with a girlfriend over coffee, sharing their heartaches and triumphs. It’s a compelling narrative that I found impossible to put down.
This is an important story that deserves to be told, and I believe so many women will find a piece of themselves within its pages. I cannot wait for her next book!!

Kate fell in love with Ryan. in She thought he was the man of her dreams. Although there were signs of possession and control, she ignored her gut and married him anyway. Both discovered they were married to the same Ryan. Their stories forged a bond that helped them heal and regain control of their lives.
I did enjoy reading this story. I found myself thinking just one more page simply because I was intrigued to figure out how the story would end. If you enjoy reading stories that are raw and emotional, I do recommend this book. I must warn you though… there are mentions of domestic violence, discussion of loss, and abortion. So please check the trigger warnings!
Favorite Quotes “Love, or, whatever this is, isn’t supposed to be this complicated.” “I look like I’m drowning in a room with no water.” “The absence of chaos is almost enough to trick me into thinking this is happiness.”
Thank you Kennedy Baker for the gifted ARC of the title. All opinions are my own.
Omg 😭😭 This book was so heartbreaking, beautiful and honestly unlike anything I have read before. It tells a story about survival, grief, hope, finding yourself again and the kind of friendship that saves you.
The writing pulled me in right away and never let go. I could not put it down. I felt so connected to the characters and every emotion hit hard. And the "wake" scene absolutely wrecked me… I was bawling my eyes out. I don’t want to say too much but I’m so glad Kate and Aria found each other and were able to help each other heal.
After reading the epilogue I’m really curious to see what comes next. I will definitely be reading more from this author.
Definitely check the trigger warnings and take care of your mental health before going in. This book does include a lot of mental and physical abuse on the page.

The Way You Lie is the story of two unlikely friends who have both fallen victim to the lies of a man who nearly ruined both of their lives. Together, they heal, and together, they become the women they were meant to be. The story is beautiful and heartfelt. The lives of Kate and Aria and the unexpectedness of their friendship kept me wanting me to read more. I was rooting for them all the way through, and their journey together is so authentic. I recommend this book to anyone who appreciates an incredible story about the bonds of friendship, recovering from abuse, and finding love when it's least expected. You won't be able to put it down!
This thriller mystery is based on a true story, including domestic abuse. It pulls you in fast and doesn’t let go. Inspired by a true story, it follows two women whose lives collide after being hurt by the same man. What really stands out is how their unexpected friendship grows into something raw, genuine, and healing. It’s definitely heavy at times, but there’s a lot of heart and hope woven in. I found myself fully invested, rooting for them, and thinking about their journey long after the last page. Highly recommend.
Where do I even begin? What starts out as a heartbreaking story about abuse ends up being the sweetest story about girlfriends and how friendship can be the true love story. Rebuilding yourself after a traumatic experience can feel impossible, but with the right people by your side healing is possible and this book proved that. I LOVED the friendship between Kate and Aria, I hope we all find that.
I’m really excited to see what comes next for Kennedy Baker!
I absolutely LOVED this book. I am a fiction fan through and through, and this ‘based on a true story’ novel kept me engaged throughout. I found the characters to be so unique and multi-layered, and the overall theme a refreshing change from some of my other recent reads. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone - I’m excited to see what’s next from this author!
I really did like this book!! The storyline was honestly so interesting and emotional without feeling overdone. It was such a cool plot seeing two women realize they were both with the same abusive man and then become best friends while helping each other overcome their past. Definitely one of those books where I kept saying “just one more chapter”.
This book kept me hooked from start to finish. Fully unable to put it down! The fact that this story is based off true events is a mix of incredible and horrifying. Horrifying the authors had to experience such abuse but incredible that they made it through and developed a friendship.

The Way You Lie had a really strong premise that immediately pulled me in, but it just didn’t fully deliver for me. I kept waiting for the tension to build or for something to really hit, and it never quite got there.
The idea behind the story had so much potential, but the execution felt a little flat. I wasn’t fully invested in the characters, which made it harder to stay engaged.
Overall, not a bad read—but definitely not one I couldn’t put down.
The Way You Lie is one of those rare stories that pulls you in quietly and then completely unravels you. Told through the lives of Kate and Aria, two women who unknowingly loved and married the same man, this novel is a raw, gripping exploration of manipulation, control, and the slow erosion of self that can happen in toxic relationships. What makes it so powerful isn’t just the abuse itself, but how realistically it unfolds, subtle at first, masked as love, until you barely recognize the person you once were. It’s uncomfortable in the way that truth often is, and impossible to look away from.
But at its heart, this book isn’t about him, it’s about them. About the unexpected, life-saving friendship that forms when two women finally feel seen and believed. Kate and Aria’s connection is the soul of this story, and watching them reclaim their voices together is everything. The Way You Lie is not a traditional love story, it’s better. It’s a story about survival, resilience, and the profound healing that happens when women stand beside each other and say, “You’re not crazy. I lived it too.” If you love emotionally honest books that leave you changed, this one is absolutely the book for you!

The Way You Lie is one of those stories that makes you pause just to sit with what you’ve read - and yet is so intriguing that it keeping you flipping the pages, unable to put the book down. What makes this book unforgettable is the redemption found in connection. The friendship that grows between these two women feels genuine and hard-earned, and it’s where so much of the hope in the story lives. Heavy at times, but ultimately hopeful, this is a powerful read I’ll be thinking about for a while.
The Way You Lie by Kennedy Baker kept me interested from start to finish. I loved that it’s based on a true story, which made everything feel more raw and meaningful. The friendship that forms through so much pain was honestly my favorite part—it was emotional without being overdone and felt very real. Overall, it’s one of those books that sticks with you after you’re done reading, and I’d definitely recommend it if you like stories with heart and depth.
