If you can’t step away from your business without everything breaking, you didn’t build a company—you built a job. Unchained is a raw, firsthand look at entrepreneurship, family business, and how to regain control before burnout decides for you.
Equal parts memoir and business playbook, Unchained makes the case for running “exit-ready”, building your company as if you’ll sell in 18 to 24 months, even if you never plan to. It’s an honest examination of entrepreneurship, family business, and the unseen cost of financial success.
Bobby Mascia shares his personal journey—and the lessons learned the hard way—for founders who feel shackled by responsibility, pressure, and a business that can’t run without them. He doesn’t offer glossy success stories. He tells the truth about what it costs to build, scale, walk away, start over, and lead again.
What you’ll gain from this • Clarity on why your business may feel harder than it should, and what to change • A new way to think about ownership, leadership, and long-term freedom • Real-world insight into family business conflict and blurred boundaries • Lessons on building value without sacrificing your life • Perspective from someone who has left, rebuilt, and returned stronger
After leaving a promising Wall Street career, Bobby joined his family’s Dunkin’ Donuts franchise business, which included multiple locations and a manufacturing facility. He believed hard work and loyalty would lead to fulfillment. Instead, he found a high-revenue operation plagued by toxic culture and constant conflict. When tensions reached a breaking point, Bobby made the leap many entrepreneurs walking away clean to start over from zero.
Bobby went on to build a successful wealth management firm, advising entrepreneurs and business owners on how to grow, protect, and ultimately unlock the value they’ve built. That combination—firsthand experience inside a complex family business and years spent helping founders align business decisions with personal wealth—gives Bobby a rare, practical perspective.
This book is for you • You feel like the bottleneck and can’t step away without things breaking • Your success looks good on paper, but costs you time or relationships • You’re navigating family business dynamics with no clear exit or succession plan • You worry your company depends too much on you to survive disruption
Unchained chronicles the reality of starting over, nearly losing everything, and being pulled back into the family business under crisis conditions. With humor, humility, and clarity, Bobby shows why so many entrepreneurs build businesses that drain them—and how to design one that creates freedom instead.
This is not a theory book. It’s a firsthand account of what happens when grit isn’t enough, systems matter, and leadership means stepping out of the hero role.
