But Groundhog does NOT want to leave his cozy bed in his cozy den. Will the townspeople be able to coax him outside to do his job? Kids will love the humorous antics of Groundhog in this delightful rhyming tale from the author of "Sleep, Big Bear, Sleep."
This is a "Groundhog Day" book that has cute illustrations and tells the story of the groundhog who has lots of reasons not to come out of his stump. Good repetition of the phrase "It's Groundhog day, please come out!" throughout the book. The illustrations and story give a nod to Punxsutaney Phil in PA without specifically naming him.
When the groundhogs doesn't want to leave his bed the people of the town entice him with gifts. Beautifully illustrated and done in poetic form. A sweet story for bedtime to read to young children.

Grumpy Groundhog by Maureen Wright is a playful take on Groundhog Day, featuring a reluctant groundhog who doesn’t want to wake up and face the cold. The townspeople eagerly wait for his appearance, but convincing him to come out proves to be a challenge.
The story is simple and easy to follow, making it a suitable read for younger children. The illustrations by Amanda Haley are bright and cheerful, adding charm to the groundhog’s grumpy antics. While the concept is cute, the plot felt a bit repetitive, and the humor didn’t stand out much.
Overall, it was an okay read, fun for a seasonal storytime but not particularly memorable.
Grumpy Groundhog is a rhyming book for young children and perfect for Groundhog Day. It gives adults a way to expand knowledge of an American tradition about the groundhog seeing his shadow on February 2nd and predicting if we have six more weeks of winter. This can start a discussion about how scientific this method is of predicting weather compared to following air currents. This can give children knowledge of a new animal that we do not have in this area of the country. It also shows how the town people work together to get the Grumpy Groundhog to come out and then show him a good time with a play day. The illustrations are beautiful and appealing to young children too.
I borrowed this book from the Prime Leading Library.
This is a beautifully illustrated short book for children with a great message about well being nice? To those of you who don't know, Groundhog Day is on February 2nd and that's when we find out if winter is to stay- Groundhog shadow style!
Though the groundhog was grumpy, adults and children didn't give up so maybe the lesson is about not giving up?
Anyway, the drawings are cute with diverse characters which is great! A fun read to your kid.
A nice way to start Groundhog Day especially with a child who resists leaping out of bed. Groundhog is nice and cozy warm and not inclined to come out and do his Groundhog Day predicting duties. In a nice rhyming story, he is lured out of bed by the daily newspaper, a nice breakfast and a set of warm slippers. After he is finally awake (I credit the coffee), he predicts an early spring, plays with the town folk and then after a busy day returns to his cozy bed to continue his hibernation.
It's Groundhog Day and the groundhog wants to stay in bed. The children in town make suggestions to the mayor, such as feeding the groundhog breakfast in bed and getting slippers so the groundhog will not be cold as cold, and this kindness coaxes the groundhog outside eventually. Then the groundhog makes a snowman with the children and, when the groundhog eventually goes back to bed, he is now looking forward to spring coming early so that they can all play together more.
This would be a great book to read for Groundhogs Day! I think younger children would really like to see the pictures and listen to the story. It could also help them understand what Groundhogs Day is! The illustrations in this book are really cool to look at!
I was honestly not expecting to like this book, but I did! The illustrations are alright. They're very colorful and busy, but I feel like they add more of a dramatic effect to the story. The story itself was great and parts of it had a rhyming feel to it.
If you’re looking for a bedtime story for Groundhog Day, this is it! With Groundhog Day being such a niche holiday, this book is very much a one-day-a-year kind of read. Overall, it was cute, but nothing too special.
Cute story of a whole town trying to wake up the groundhog for his special holiday. This is a rhyming story with colorful illustrations. Kids will love this one. Highly recommended Grades K-2.
Groundhog refuses to get out of bed for Groundhog's Day. The crowd and the mayor capitulate to his every demand and he eventually comes outside. Not my taste in art, but it tells the story.
grumpy Groundhog is a bit of a mixed bag. The catchy rhyme scheme and colorful illustrationss were reminiscent of Dr. Zeuss. Children will identify with a grumpy groundhog who doesn't want to leave his nice warm bed. Various people in the crowds give suggestions about how to get the groundhog to come out. This is a great example of problem solving. I only rated this book average, because I don't find the lazy groundhog an appealing character. He refuses to come out until he is fed, and then still refuses to leave his bed after enjoying the meal. He seemed rather selfish.
On February 2 the town tries to get the groundhog out of his bed. He doesn't want to get out of bed so several people make suggestions to fill the groundhog's requests.
