Great suspense/thriller! Loved the character of Jake. The storyline was enthralling and the edge-of-your-seat action was non-stop. The only drawback was the female lead’s character. Her actions just didn’t line up in a believable way. For instance, would a seasoned FBI agent jump into bed with a complete stranger, an unkept drifter to boot, within 24 hours after introduction... seriously?

This is the first of AJ Tata's books I've read. I will definitely read others. Jake Mahegan is a character a lot like Jack Reacher in that he's driven by a "Do the Right Thing" mentality. There were enough twists & turns to keep me guessing until the end.

Great book. A lot of action. Second of this series that I have read, not in order lol. Mr Tata does not waste any words here. I like that. Was good to get the first of the series done too, just makes a little more sense now.

FOREIGN and DOMESTIC by A.J. TATA

I received a free paperback copy of this book for review.

F&D is a mostly enjoyable military special ops thriller along the lines of those written by Vince Flynn and Brad Thor. It is, however, not up to that quality of workmanship.

F&D has all of the required ingredients for the genre. 1. A highly trained Spec.Ops soldier, in this Case, one Jake Mahegan, former Army captain whose last mission went horribly bad, resulting in mission failure and the death of most of his squad. He retired from the service, cloud over his head, and with a need for the answers to what went wrong.
2. A nasty Islamic terrorist , American born, with high tech weapons that evade detection, and the eagerness to use them-- in the USA.
3. A beautiful, mysterious babe.
4. An ambitious , unscrupulous Army general who wants to be Chief of Staff, and views making Mahegan as an incompetent leader, or worse, a traitor, as the key to the General's upward move.
5. A shadowy, evil. corporation making money from soldiers' blood.
All the ingredients are present, but the result is so-so.

A.J. TATA is a retired army general himself, so when he writes about combat his story is at its best. He has a clearly stated contempt for Pentagon Princes who fight from behind a desk.He has a clear understanding of the threat from Islamic jihadists. But his plot has just too many elements that do not meld well. The initial terror attacks are precisely plotted and described in all their horrifyingly real effects, but the massive main attack plan was, to me at least, unbelievable in its complexity. Not to mention that it takes one super heroic op to bring it all down.

The book is about a 100 pages too long. The mysterious, beautiful babe, who is an actress, marine engineer, pirate treasure hunter, a descendant of one of the first colonists, a deputy sheriff, and yes, a bit more ( no spoiler here), seemed out of place. Even as a plot device ( she provides help to Mahegan ( and a bit of , uh, recreation) her role was overwritten.

Speaking of writing, Tata tends to repeat himself- maybe he had to remind himself where this book was heading and where it had been- and sometimes seems to be penning an after action report; using mil-speak like personnel instead of people or vehicle rather than car, for example. Military jargon abounds for fans: weapons , secret communication and night- vision devices are, in fact better described than the characters. Well, verisimilitude rules in these cases.

Note: lots of killing, precisely and economically done by the hero, massively and horrifically done by the terrorists. Mild sex scene. And, of course, an encounter with a few Rednecks who are, as usual, barely able to stay out of the way of their own tobacco-spit.

Three stars for fans.

A fun read, once which I thought would not end well, surprised me! The main character is really good and he's easy to cheer for. I also enjoy the loose premise that he's kinda working for the government and kinda not so much (though he clearly his!) The story is really well presented and relatable, even though I'm not from the area. it kept my interest throughout. Very well put together.

Intertwining a fast-paced action, thriller with many unique twists and turns of a mystery, A.J. Tata provides us with an all new book of “Foreign and Domestic”.

Upon returning from tours of duty in Afghanistan and trying to cope with the loss of his closest ally, Chayton “Jake” Mahegan tries to blend in to modern day society, while digging deep within his Native American roots and communing with nature. Little does he know that his military oath of defending against all things both foreign AND domestic has not come to an end quite yet.

Tata's newest book leaves the reader on a wild goose chase of playing a game of “Clue” trying to determine who is the bad guy vs. the good guy. So many elements of surprise and twists, allows the reader to delve himself into the book and let their own imagination run wild trying to determine who or what is behind all the events occurring within the USA.

Mahegan's character is one of fierce determination for seeking revenge for the loss of his comrade but also defending his native homeland. He is the new Jack Bauer (TV show “24”). Mahegan never stops – he is constantly thinking, plotting, planning and discovering new items. He will not stop until the job is done – but what job is it? Each step of the way, Mahegan faces new roadblocks and must determine who can he trust along the way.

“Foreign and Domestic” is a must read as you will not want to put it down and it allows you to become a part of the book. Tata continues to deliver incredible and powerful, and even at times, highly realistic stories for the readers to engage. If you aren't a fan of his books, you need to get it in gear.

As a side note, thank you to all our servicemen and women, including A.J. Tata himself, for their dedicated service and sacrifice to our country. Without them withholding their oath of defending against all things foreign and domestic, we may not even have the freedoms to be reading such novels. Thank you for all you have done. We are proud of you and honor you!

Brigadier General A. J. Tata is a retired U.S. commander of combat units with duty in Afghanistan and writes with an intricate knowledge of his subject.

His novel, "Foreign and Domestic" is a complex story of Capt. Jake Mahegan's search for what really happened in a failed mission in Afghanistan.

There are so many stories to be told of brave Americans in battle and this is one of them.
Jake led a Delta Force team into Afghanistan to capture an American traitor working for the Taliban. Something happens and the mission ends in tragedy, taking the life of Jake's best friend Sgt. Colgate and the men with him. The bomb that killed Jake's friend was made in the U.S. and Jake wants to learn more. But before he can, he's accused of killing a prisoner and given a dishonorable discharge.

Jake returns to the U.S. and is in the process of getting information about the dealings of Copperhead, Inc. a private military contractor that had something do do with the bomb that killed his friend. He meets an attractive young woman, Lindy Locklear, who has been doing some historical research in the Roanoke Island area of North Carolina.

Not to reveal plot but an ambitious three star general orders Jake to the Pentagon for certain reasons and as the story continues, the reader watches the current terrorism activities of the American Taliban.

Jake is an intriguing character with Native American background that made me think of past heroes of Louis L'Amour. He's independent and when he sees a wrong, he wants to correct it. His character is well described and the reader will want him to succeed in his actions.

The complexity of the plot did confuse me at times but the action was smooth and suspenseful. There are a number of surprises that keep the plot interesting and spark the reader's interest.

I received a free book in return for my honest review.

Fairly deep and detailed story.

One true warrior, physically and spiritually, against some of the worst villainous characters I've read about ever (not including nonfiction characters). There are traitors, murderers, slaves, good and bad military characters, and a group of evil military contractors (worse, by far, than anything ever done by Black-Ops).

Then there is the secondary character, a beautiful and intelligent undercover federal agent who also has ancestral ties similar to Jake's in the Roanoke tribal area that she has been researching as a hobby. It would appear that Jake and Elizabeth are destined to be together. Ah, but not yet because Jake still has work to do for a General and his own fallen family of soldiers.

I liked the intrigue, but I did skip some chapters because of too much detail. Otherwise, I would have given it five stars.

Love it!

If you are looking for a strong plot written by a man with perfect insight into the military industrial complex, this is a book for you. The protagonist, Capt. Jake Mahegan, has the right skill set to be the perfect action hero, and enough personal demons to make him interesting. The supporting cast includes the evil terrorist, the ex-military sellouts, the ace-in-the-hole general, and the beautiful and uniquely talented female civilian.

I found the story line highly enjoyable, the character development and pace excellent, and the right mix of additional subplot information (concerning North Carolina Native American culture, for example) to make this a fantastic book. I highly recommend it and I look forward to reading the next book in the series as well as other works by this talented author.

“Foreign and Domestic” keeps the reader on the edge of their seat for most of the book. Retired from the U. S. Army, Brigadier General A.J. Tata spins a thriller that’s both interesting and suspenseful. Captain Jake Mahegan is a complex character who has served his country in Afghanistan, but was dismissed. He seeks to clear his name and gets involved. Not only do we get experience a roller coaster of a story, but the reader learns more about some of the young men who are recruited or join the Taliban.

Thank you GoodReads for the book.

Plenty of action for the thriller junkies like myself. If I had any negative thoughts it was the author made the story too busy. Too many bad guys. There's the terrorists blowing up military bases. The Taliban in Afghanistan, the 'ghosts', the rogue military contractors, the three star general trying to hang Mahegan out to dry, the local law enforcement. Just too many to keep straight on where Jake stood with each at any given time.

Fun read for those who enjoy the action thriller genre.

This is the first book in the Jake Mahegan series. It was suspenseful until the very end. I wonder why the author chose to use the actual names of some locations such as Fort Bragg while using fictitious names for others such as Fort Brackett.

As in the later books in the series, Jake Mahegan ends up in bed with one of the women in the story. This seems out of character for a protagonist like Jake who is single-mindedly focused on his objective to be distracted by a sexual encounter. However, this seems to occur frequently in this series.

Reading the last half of this book was a great way to enjoy my birthday.
Jake Mahegan is a great literary character and General Tata did an excellent job of making him come to life.
This book has intrigue and more action than a Rambo movie, and from the detail given to character development, the reader is able to visualize just what the author was conveying.
I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series to see how General Tata can top this book!

Enjoyable. Mostly takes place at OBX of North Carolina which holds a great interest to me. This is a NEW author so I was pleasantly surprised that this was so well done. Jake Mahegan was a former Delta Force team leader in Afganistan who set out to capture an American Traitor. Then it all went wrong.

I really enjoyed this book for several reasons. First it held my attention throughout. Second I loved the setting in North Carolina, where wildlife such as snakes, crocodiles are part of the setting. It was hard to figure out who was straight and who was bad. Tata is definitely on my to read list for anti terrorist type books.

An atypical thriller in that there aren’t multiple shootouts with a larger than life hero. Instead you get Jake Mahegan using his brains and experience against a corrupt general and military contractor to stop their theft of gold and power. Great read with technical details that take you inside the head of a special force operator. Accurate, I don’t know. Entertaining read, absolutely yes.

I enjoyed the overall plot, and character development. Having grown up in Virginia Beach, and attended ECU, it was interesting to read about the Kill Devil Hills area that I’ve known for years. Jake is an interesting character. This type of story is eye-opening, yet scary at the same time. The “private sector” military groups should make all Americans nervous.

On an AJ Tata splurge. 😀 This is one of his early books. It’s good but as I’ve read the next ones in the series it’s been fun to watch his writing style mature. Jake Mahegan, the main character is complex and likable, plus ex-delta force. Everywhere he goes he seems to find evil villains and a kick ass woman. A fun read!

Another American action hero who is modest and unassuming in appearance but who has a whole range of powers to defeat the villains he comes up against in defending America. An excellent read and I look forward to other books in the series.

This is another Tata hero "man (with skills) against the world". Loved it! I've read the entire Mahegan series, all were good and sprinkled with truth, made more interesting by Tata's personal military history.

Outstanding!

I have been wanting to read General Tata’s books for some time. Too many great novelists, but I found his protagonist quite different from many of the others I’ve read. I’m hooked now with this series and will have to read them all. Highly recommended!

I really enjoyed this intriguing tale of treasure, deceit, action & greed. Mahegan (Mohegan) is special. He is in tune, he is honorable, he is ex Delta. An entertaining story.
