“This isn’t normal. This isn’t how it’s supposed to be…the knot is coming unravelled.”

Grief is one of nature’s most chaotic forces. It can throw our lives – our very worlds – into turmoil. Charlie White has never felt the depths of despair drag at her so keenly. But Charlie is a Keeper, and it’s her duty to maintain the Balance. Can she withstand it, or will this grief be her great undoing?

She bent the rules. And now, the laws of purgatory are being broken all around her. The spirit guides will gather like they never have before, fighting over a lost soul. Risking everything. And Charlie will find herself at the centre of this brewing storm.

She’s always been warned to stay in control. Always warned to put her duty before everything else. She knows what’s at stake if she fails. She knows worse will be coming for her…

I am so invested in these characters and book five builds so much on the books that have come before. There is more of the relationship - and tensions - between Charlie and Tess. More of what happens with Trent. More Australian history and more spooky, twisty supernatural lore. If you haven’t already read the first four books, stop right now and go back and read them. This story starts with Charlie wanting to help Hanora, who she met in book four, and leads her to follow her story back to Parramatta where Hanora was born and grew up. But things are never simple for Charlie in purgatory, and she is soon led to another spirit, as well as to a number of different guides, some of whom she’s met before, some who are a brand new, and some who she hoped she’d never see again. Charlie starts asking questions she’d never thought to ask before. And she is terrified where the answers might lead. I so enjoyed this book and getting to understand more of Charlie’s powers and dilemmas. My only regret is this brings us so much closer to the end of the series! Only one book to go! I really hope the author might write some more books that explore this concept of purgatory when Charlie’s story ends. There seems to be so much richness to explore.

This book is a continuation of The Corner of Her Eye series. Yes, JJ includes a 'road so far' section at the front of the book but it does not replace reading the books. It truly is a special experience.

Book 5: The Lost feels like you're picking up a ball of multicoloured yarn - you don't realise it's all connected until you start to pick it up. JJ's writing and foreshadowing is excellent, particularly in this regard!

The emotional stakes are high and the tension is thick! We see old friends and make... well, not new friends, but we meet new people.

Once again, I've learnt new things about Australian history and enjoy how JJ intertwines real history with her fictional writing.

We see Charlie grow and develop in her role and as always, there's a touch of a cliffhanger to set us up for the next book. (Which I will 'patiently' wait for)

Thanks to the author for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

WOW. Each book in this series gets darker somehow, and I'm always left reflecting on everything that has happened thus far. As usual, the characters have so much depth and I adore them. I loved all of the new characters too - it's so much fun seeing how this world develops with each book. You truly learn everything about this spirit realm and the hierarchy within it along with our main characters, Charlie, Tess, and Trent. I also love all of the history involved about Australia. As someone from the US, I find everything included in this series fascinating because literally everything in it is new to me.

It was perfect that I read The Lost during Women's History Month, because it definitely fit in with the theme of books I've accidentally chosen to read during this time. There are definitely a lot of parallels between today (from what I'm seeing in the US right now) and how women have been treated throughout history even in other parts of the world. It's bleak and infuriating. I also loved the story between Liza and Hanora - it was heartbreaking and actually somewhat relatable to me (to an extent). The cliffhanger has me stressed for the final installment to this series!

If you haven't read this series yet, please do. It's such a beautiful blend of horror, history, and the afterlife. There's such a great blend of characters, including LGBTQIA+ representation and disability representation. I'm scared/sad/excited to see how the conclusion to this series will unfold.

Thank you to the author for providing this free digital ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts on The Lost.
This is the fifth book in the Corner of Her Eye series, and it absolutely delivers. We follow Charlie, a Keeper responsible for maintaining the Balance until she breaks the rules and the laws of purgatory begin to unravel around her. I was hooked from the very first chapter and couldn’t stop turning the pages. The characters are all compelling, especially Charlie, and the story kept me fully invested throughout. I really enjoyed the writing, the pacing, and the way the book ends on a cliffhanger. Overall, this was a fantastic read, and I’d recommend it to anyone who loves a good supernatural thriller.

It’s all been leading up to this.
I almost feel like books five and six are a “part one and two” of the grand finale. Warning: there is a cliffhanger, but it answers enough questions that you feel satisfied, while still being so ready for the next installment, the final book!
Charlie and her friends face new dangers, new stress and high emotions, and while in the previous book there were many times that felt incredibly sad, this book had strong undercurrents of dread, which added to the overall spookiness of the series. The dialogue is realistic as always, the characters feel like people I could meet at the local pub, and the prose is gorgeous.
It will be exciting to see how JJ brings this series of love, drama, horror and humour to a conclusion.
