Dungeon Mantle

Rate this book
Atlas Aurox has lived his entire life in poverty. Orphaned young, he survives by picking up the Crystals left in the Dungeon by true Adventurers. But everything changes when he undergoes the Mantle Trial—a test which could grant him the power to step into the Dungeon as one of the elite instead of their Mundane servant.

Yet power comes with a price. The world of Adventurers is darker, bloodier, and far more treacherous than Atlas ever imagined. Monsters and Gods lurk not only in the depths, but in the ambitions of those who call themselves allies.

Can Atlas carve a place for himself in this ruthless world—or will he be swallowed whole, just another forgotten name among the fallen?

This book was just ok. It's very long at over 1K pages, and should have probably been broken up into 3 books to make it easier to read as it has 3 arcs to it.

The MC is an 18yr old guy that goes for his "mantle" testing that all 18yr olds go through during a once a year testing. He gets a mantle, and his class is "Godling", so he has the ability to grow so powerful he can become a god. The archbishop administering the test hides his class, because he knows the existing gods will kill the MC to prevent him from reaching godhood. He also assigns a healer to him, and she supposedly will view him as her god eventually. Then swears them to secrecy. Thus begins his adventures.

After over 1K pages, the MC is level 4. We're talking Dungeons and Dragons slow in leveling up. The glacial development would have been refreshing if he was level 4 after 400 pages, not 1,100. There's a lot of shopping trips. Lots of farming dungeons for experience. And a lot of tedium to read through, since only the floor boss battles are a little interesting. The fact he can't add his points to his stats because he already was 30 above everyone else at level 1 makes his progress feel even less.

The romances are tedious at best, and if there was any actual sex, it was fade to black. It's tough to tell, because it's "they went into the tent together, then he exits it the next morning" kind of thing. The first LI falls for him pretty much instantly. The second is much higher and is now partially his instructor, though they haven't done more than kiss. Honestly, the harem concept is being driven largely by one of the party members that teases the MC about it constantly, and drives women towards him.

I'm really on the fence on reading a second book of this. Maybe if my reading queue gets small enough, I'll read it.

Pretty good

Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. And it was longer than I expected as well. The main thing that bugged me was the constant recaps of what happened 2-3 chapters before.
