For Rent

Rigg keeps his life small on purpose.
A steady job at an animal shelter. Long walks with his dog. Familiar bars, familiar streets. He’s learned that staying quiet keeps the past from catching up to you—and that some instincts are better buried.
Then Erin moves in next door.
She’s magnetic, damaged, and tangled in something she won’t fully explain. Bruises appear where they shouldn’t. Her boyfriend smiles too politely. And when he shows up unannounced at Rigg’s workplace, something old and dangerous stirs awake.
What begins as concern becomes obsession. What feels like protection becomes justification.
As secrets surface and lines blur, Rigg is forced to confront a truth he’s spent years some people don’t run from violence—they recognize it. And once crossed, there’s no such thing as walking away clean.
For Rent is a psychological noir thriller about desire, control, and the seductive lie of righteous violence—where the difference between savior and predator is decided in silence, and survival may demand becoming something you swore you never would.

About the author

Christopher Bowen

2 books6 followers
Christopher Bowen is a thriller and psychological suspense author whose stories explore obsession, moral decay, and the thin line between protector and predator. His debut novel, For Rent, blends slow-burn tension with unsettling realism, drawing readers into seemingly ordinary lives that hide something deeply wrong beneath the surface.

Bowen’s writing favors atmosphere over excess—revealing violence through implication, memory, and consequence rather than spectacle. His characters are flawed, driven, and often complicit in their own unraveling, forcing readers to question who deserves saving and what justice really looks like.

When he isn’t writing, Bowen resides in the Carolinas, where he balances business ownership, fitness, and an ongoing fascination with true crime and human behavior. He is currently working on Southbound, a follow-up set in the same dark world as For Rent.

I was immediately drawn into this story and couldn’t put it down. The pacing and suspense are fantastic, and the writing makes it easy to get lost in. The characters feel real, the tension never lets up, and just when you think you know what’s coming, the story twists in a way that keeps you on your toes. Already looking forward to book two!!

Must Read!! Incredible story that reads like a movie

I really enjoyed this book! It reads like a movie. The author did an incredible job of describing the characters, and developing a storyline that made me eager to continue reading. The ending was awesome, and I cannot wait to read his next book!

For Rent by Christopher Bowen is a quick and easy read, largely because of its short chapters and fast pacing. The brief chapters made it simple to move through the story without feeling overwhelmed, and they helped keep the narrative moving at a steady pace.

However, the book felt extremely short overall. Just as the story began to build momentum and become more engaging, it suddenly ended. This left several questions unanswered and made the conclusion feel somewhat abrupt and incomplete. Readers who enjoy deeper resolution or more developed endings may find themselves wishing the author had expanded the story further.

While the structure of the book—with its short chapters—was a positive aspect and made the reading experience convenient, the limited length ultimately prevented the story from reaching its full potential.

Overall, For Rent is an easy, fast read with a format that works well, but its abrupt ending may leave readers wanting more closure and explanation.

Good, not great.

The book started easily enough and genuinely held my attention. However, some parts just felt rushed. The ending, especially, and I can't really say that I enjoyed it.

Rig is a man content with his life, home, and employment. That is, until Erin and her boyfriend arrive. After the first couple of encounters with Erin, warning bells seemed to ring. Still, they completely escaped Rig, whose awareness that something was off didn't come until much later, given that his mind is often clouded with thoughts of everything but what he should've been focusing on. If ever there were a time to listen to his friends/ coworkers/ neighbors.

I read the book while listening to the Audible, which I unfortunately would not recommend. The narrator was absolutely horrible. It felt like listening to Ben Stein and the virtual voice combined. Yeah, it's that bad, and it is the primary reason for my rating.

For Rent is one of those books that grabs you on the first page and doesn’t let go. This was an incredibly engaging read. The writing is sharp and immersive with a clear, consistent voice that makes it easy to settle into the story right away. The pacing is excellent, keeping you guessing while also giving enough room for the characters' inner worlds to develop.

The story balances intrigue and emotional nuance in a way that's both gripping and thoughtful with well-drawn relationships that feel real. The characters feel grounded and believable, and the author does a great job creating atmosphere without leaning on unnecessary detail.

I finished it in one sitting and immediately wanted to recommend it to everyone who loves smart, character-driven novels. Fans of psychological suspense and nuanced thrillers will also find a lot to love here.

There’s something deeply unsettling about a place that should feel like home… but doesn’t.

For Rent takes the familiar idea of a fresh start and twists it into something suffocating. From the moment the protagonist steps into that house, you can feel it the walls are watching, the air is wrong, and the past isn’t just lingering… it’s hunting. This isn’t your typical slasher-style serial killer thriller. It’s quieter. Meaner. Psychological. The kind of story where the horror creeps up behind you instead of kicking the door in. And when it finally strikes? It leaves damage.Bowen builds tension like a slow tightening noose. Every chapter peels back another layer, making you question what’s real, who’s safe, and whether escape was ever an option to begin with.By the end, you’re left with that cold realization:Some places don’t let you leave.

For Rent by Christopher Bowen
Narrated by Chris Koprowski
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟(4.5 rounded up)

Love, obsession, thrills…

This is an interesting and entertaining psychological thriller.
When Erin moves in next door to Riggs, she shakes up his quiet and simple life. Things get extra intense in the story when Erin’s boyfriend is added to the mix!

I listened to the audio and the narrator did an excellent job! He is very expressive!

This is my first book from this author and I enjoy his writing style. It’s a well written story and grabbed me right away! I’m excited to read more!

*I recommend checking out this engaging book!!*

This psychological short story is only three and a half hours long. For Rent was written by Christopher Bowen and narrated by Chris Koprowski. The author was just ok but the narrator fell flat, monotonous and boring at some points. Fell asleep many times with this audiobook and had to go back and listen to it again and again.
I am glad it was only three and a half hours long. Not my cup of tea.
