Still Missing

Rate this book
Death comes calling in Still County, and it’s making a scene.

When a stranger turns up on Apex land with a deer’s head where his own should be, Rita Jonas, Apex’s new Head of Law Enforcement Operations, catches the case.

Then, a longtime resident gets killed the same way. Two victims, no connection, no motive. Just a killer who plans everything down to the last detail.

Winter’s closing in, and now Rita is chasing down someone who stays ahead of her at every turn. When her mother disappears, the case gets personal fast. And with Rita’s pregnancy no longer a secret, she’s got more to lose than ever.

Still Missing is the fifth book in The Still County Thrillers—a tense mystery where Rita’s past won’t let go, and neither will the killer.

I have always been a huge fan of Crime Thrillers, especially those where the story unfolds gradually, keeping the tension high. In Still Missing, Lauren Street delivered exactly that: a constant sense of intrigue and a perfectly placed trail of clues to solve the case.
The intensity and style of this book reminded me a lot of stories by Blake Pierce, an author known for gripping and fast-paced mysteries. I particularly enjoyed the journey of Rita, the main character; her development was one of the highlights of the book for me.
Even though I devoured this story very quickly, I believe it’s a book that should be read carefully. There are subtle details hidden in the narrative that could easily be missed if you aren't paying close attention. While I thoroughly enjoyed the ending, it left me craving even more from this world!
I am giving this a 4-star rating. It is a solid, engaging thriller that I highly recommend to anyone looking for their next immersive mystery. Thank you to the author for providing me with this ARC!

Lauren Street’s Still Missing is a sharply written, deeply unsettling thriller that leans hard into atmosphere and sustained tension. Told through Rita Jonas’s close, focused point of view, the writing keeps the reader tethered to every discovery, every doubt, and every rising fear, creating a steady hum of unease that never fully releases. Street’s prose is controlled and deliberate, revealing just enough at a time to keep the suspense coiling tighter as the investigation grows darker and more personal. The crimes are disturbing, the secrets feel dangerous, and the emotional stakes intensify as Rita is pushed beyond professional boundaries. Twisty, ominous, and impossible to put down, this is a suspense-driven story that succeeds because of its confident pacing and immersive writing. ★★★★☆ (4.5 stars).

I received this as an ARC through NetGalley and Sterling & Stone publishing company.
This is book 5 in The Still County Thrillers series. I think these are standalone books as I have not read the first 4 of the series.
This story is based on a pregnant cop/investigator trying to solve two murders well uncovering her own family secrets.
I enjoyed the character development and relationships within the story.
There are a lot of editorial/grammar errors.
This was not the book for me, it did not keep me guessing or wanting more. However it might be good for someone who likes mystery over thriller.
You will want to check your trigger warnings on this one.

Rita Jonas is the head of Law Enforcement Operations at APEX. She is called to a body on APEX land. The body has the head missing and in its place is a deer’s head. It takes a little while to get the body’s identity. While investigating, another body turns up and its head is missing and in its place is the first man’s head. Secrets are coming to light. When Rita’s mother disappears, Rita pulls out all the stops to find her.
Pretty good story. Told in Rita’s point of view. Suspense. It was hard to put down.
