If you've been reading the Resistance Girls series since the beginning, you'll understand my excitement that this latest book stars Lexi Street. Lexi has always been a loner who exudes toughness, and now we know why. She has a heartbreaking backstory, beginning the day she was born, when her mother abandoned her on Alexandra Street. (Yep, that's how she got her name.) Each book has a different focus, and this one deals with powerful gangs who steal from the military. This activity goes beyond black-market profiteering that threatens the home front. This is treason because they support fascism and want Hitler to win the war.

In this latest book, a few of the original group of young women make brief appearances. Jean, from their training days, is now a Lumberjill in the New Forest and wields a wicked axe. I loved the characters in Lexi's undercover job in a small pub, particularly the elderly neighbors who have banded together. Unfortunately, one of the most unlikable characters from the series makes a return, and he is still an insufferable jackass. A Deadly Mission for the Resistance Girls begins with a bang and ends with one too. Of course it does because this is Lexi's story, and I highly recommend it.

One of the things that makes Alice G. May’s resistance girls series so ‘cozy’ despite its serious wartime espionage topic is the way that she changes her focus from girl to girl as the series continues. You might be reading one volume in which a certain girl can be glimpsed somewhere in the background, performing in a supportive role, while the volumes ‘star’ is centre stage. Next, their positions change, as they naturally would, if this were a real life situation where everyone is doing their bit at a particular time, rather than crowding centre stage. I really like how she uses that method of developing each character on her own as well as part of the group of Second World War female British resistance fighters.

This volume features Lexi, who was one of the group of girls whom the stalwart, brave and beautiful Major Stapleton recruited to work undercover for the ATS. Alexandra Street was abandoned to the nasty London streets as a child, until her talent for climbing up windowsills to rooftops caught the major’s attention. Lexi’s other talents include her street-smart ways of infiltrating criminal circles while performing the characters assigned to her. Neither she nor her mentor are worried by Colonel Taylor’s persistent negativity regarding the deployment of women, whom he doesn’t believe are up to the dangers of war and espionage, and, because they are innately unable to keep secrets, he is ever suspicious that they might even pose grave security risks.

Lexi’s mission is to take on a job at the Curlew Pub in the New Forest neighborhood of London. She boards with Walt and Dora, a warm-hearted childless couple who have taken in Frank and Bertie. Her role is to find out who is stealing great quantities of fuel intended to fight the war, and why other important items headed for Southampton docks are being diverted. The answer has to do with the gangsters who rule New Forest. Dodging mounting dangers as she becomes involved with the family, especially Frank, Lexi is put to the test as to who can be trusted.

May imbues the story with intrigue in twisting and turning developments that compel readers to keep going. The ending suggests another volume of the saga, ultimately one for each of the girls that the major first recruited.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for an ARC of this novel.

A Deadly Mission for the Resistance Girls was an exciting and gripping addition to the Resistance Girls series! This is the third book in the series, and this time the focus is on Lexi Street, a fascinating character with a difficult past and a serious talent for getting herself into dangerous situations.

Abandoned as a baby and forced to grow up learning to rely only on herself, Lexi is not exactly someone who finds trust easy. That makes her new assignment all the more challenging when Major Stapleton sends her undercover to a pub in the New Forest to investigate missing fuel, stolen military supplies, forged documents, and possible corruption. Pretty much nothing is as straightforward as it seems, and Lexi quickly discovers that she can’t afford to trust the wrong person.

I really enjoyed the suspense throughout this one. There is a constant feeling that something is about to go terribly wrong, and the danger just keeps building as Lexi gets deeper into the investigation. Between suspicious characters, local gangs, secrets, double dealing, and a kidnapping, there is plenty to keep the story moving and keep you guessing about who is actually on whose side.

Lexi was definitely my favorite part of the book. She is tough, resourceful, independent, and more than willing to bend the rules when necessary. I also loved the strong female characters throughout the series and seeing Lexi begin to realize that perhaps she doesn’t always have to do everything completely on her own.

Overall, this was a nail-biting historical mystery with plenty of action, intrigue, secrets, and suspense. I found myself completely engrossed and wanting to know what would happen next. If you enjoy WWII historical fiction featuring courageous women, undercover missions, secret agents, and plenty of twists and turns, this series is definitely worth checking out.

A fantastic conclusion to the Resistance Girls series!

Thank you to NetGalley, Boldwood Books, and Alice G. May for the advanced copy. All opinions expressed are my own.

This is the 4th book in the series - as we know there is another to come from the end of this one. - I for one can’t wait. As there were 6 girls in the hut in book 1 I am hoping we will get a 6th as well.

This one kept be captivated from page 1.

Alexandra Street got her name from where she was abandoned. Known mostly as Lexi - but with various aliases depending where Major Stapleton has had her posted - she is the most feisty of the original ATS girls. The one most likely to listen to the instructions given then go her own way.

This time her own way has her posted as a barmaid in a village pub. There she meets Frank, and Walt, Dora and Bertie. Frank knows that Walt and Dora are not his parents but an Aunt and Uncle. Dora dotes on Bertie - a much longed for son with his own difficulties.

But valuable fuel needed for the war effort is going astray - and items imported into Southampton Docks often doesn’t end up where it should - but a Heidelberg printing press could be used for all sorts of nefarious deeds.

Lucky doesn’t live up to his name but he is a much respected gangster as is The Judge - who Lexi knows of and despises from her youth and her friend Theo. Unfortunately Wlat had used Lucky to produce fraudulent papers for Frank to avoid call-up. But once caught in Lucky’s trap there is no escape.

Colonel Taylor continues his mysogenistic ways - he knows women aren’t capable of meaningful warfare.

Major Stapleton and and Lexi think otherwise and plan his comeuppance.

But Frank and his villager friends and colleagues face terrible danger - but when it matters community conquers all.

So a book with lots of action and intrigue - so well written and research that you are riveted and not a lot gets done while you read ‘just a little more’

It’s rare a book - or a series captures me as this one has. Absolutely brilliant - or as I think they would’ve said at the time - spiffing read.

I have previously read The Resistance Girls by Alice G May. I hadn’t realised she had written any more, but this seems to be the 4th one in the series. It was a great read. In the first story there were 6 girls sharing Hut 6, this is the story of Lexi. She was abandoned as a baby and grew up not trusting anyone but herself. Her assignment is a posting to The Curlew, a pub in the New Forest. She is trying to find out who is passing information and stealing petrol. Her alias is as a bar tender in the pub. Her boss is Major Stapleton, a very understanding person. The excitement mounts when Lexi gets involved with Frank and they deal with gangs in trying to solve the conundrum. I was engrossed in this book from the beginning. So sorry it has ended. Exciting and gripping.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Boldwood Books and Alice G May for an arc of this super book.

I really enjoyed this book, the 3rd in the Resistance Girls trilogy, Alice G May has written a very interesting and gripping story that is full of intrigue and danger. The main character Lexi is a bit of a loose canon.who is tasked to find out who is stealing fuel and other items from the storage bunkers dotted around the area of the Curlew Pub. Lexi starts working and living at the pub as her cover story and grows close to the family all the while working undercover. This was an interesting story, I can imagine the Resistance Girls in the war training to help save their country if an attack should happen. Parts of it felt a bit over the top, but that just adds to the entertainment factor. An overall very good read, I recommend this and the other books in the series.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC. Publication date 27 September 2026.

This time we get to find out more about feisty Lexi. Lexi is a bit of a loner, after a sad childhood. Not really trusting people she prefers to work alone. With her latest mission from the Major, Lexi is surprised to find herself getting involved with the family that she is staying with undercover as a barmaid. Worryingly for Lexi she seems to find herself getting attached to these new people. Especially fond of Bertie who reminds her of her only close friend Theo. I really enjoyed getting to know more about Lexi, and I look forward to finding out more of the girls in 2027 when the next book in this series comes out.

This is the third book in the Resistance Girls series, but it’s my first read by this author. I look forward to reading more of her books. It’s an interesting story with Lexi Street as the main protagonist. Lexi is sent undercover to investigate corruption, theft and deceit. She must decide who she can trust and how to solve the issues. A gripping World War Two historical mystery, set in the UK, with plenty of intrigue, suspense and action.
