Desert Trails & Deadly Tales: A Raven West Mystery

Rate this book
The living desert. A psychic hound. And a body in a ravine.
Journalist Raven West heads into Arizona’s Borderlands to investigate Native artifact smuggling. She expects shady characters and red tape, but what she doesn’t expect are eerie glowing lights, dangerous shifting ground, and a corpse in the desert.
Camping at a national monument with her sharp-witted friend Maya and her psychic dog, Oscar, Raven uncovers signs of illegal digging tied to a powerful smuggling ring she’s crossed before. But these artifacts were never meant to be moved, and disturbing them has awakened something ancient—and territorial.

As federal authorities close ranks and the desert grows increasingly hostile, Raven must navigate buried secrets and forces that don’t answer to modern law. With one ranger already dead and the danger escalating, Raven must trust her instincts while respecting ancient boundaries. If she fails to catch the killer, she could become the next secret the ravine keeps.

That was interesting, but somehow I dropped into the series here in book three (?) and felt like I had no idea what was happening the whole time. The writing leans a bit too far into being evocative rather than communicative. Characters and relationships are sketched rather than developed. Still, I enjoyed that it was very different fare from the mysteries I’ve been reading lately.
