A groundbreaking, paradigm-shifting book about men's violence against women, how it affects us all, and what men can do to stop it. Why are we failing to end men's violence against women?
What are some practical steps we can take personally, institutionally, and politically? This deeply insightful and provocative book suggests a bold reframing the issue as the responsibility of every man-not just those who have abused women. Jackson Katz reveals indispensable tools that will help men of all backgrounds become part of the solution to gender-based violence. Find out how to respond when a friend or colleague makes a misogynistic comment; learn how to intervene in incidents that may seem small but can lead to violence; and discover how fathers, uncles, teachers, coaches, and youth workers-as well as cultural, business and political leaders-can offer guidance and support to young men navigating today's treacherous social-and social media-terrain.
This is essential reading for every man who wants to make society safer for everyone.
I'm a big fan of Jackson Katz and still remember - vividly - attending a talk he provided for our campus many years ago. Prior to that and definitely since, I've stayed up on his work, and I appreciate the contributions he has made and continues to make to this important field of study.
Katz delves into many aspects of the long-term causes behind gender-based violence and who causes it. This book is full of practical strategies and vital insights. For me, the standout highlights are (1) the way he talks about language (who does what to whom vs. such-and-such was done to so-and-so, which makes so-and-so a victim/recipient/responsible party in her own terror) and (2) the tangible steps a person can take - from a variety of different perspectives and identities - to make change.
This is a quick but impactful read, and I expect many folks interested in the topic - and perhaps interested in reprogramming someone in their space - will find a lot of use for this.
