Amelia Steele has just been turned—pulled into the dark embrace of vampirism and bound by blood to Everest Steele, a brooding musician tied to her through a forgotten past life. What begins as what she hopes will be a fated love story soon twists into something far darker. The Heathen’s Creek Vampiric Council brands her untrustworthy until she can control her new vampiric powers, and condemns her to confinement under the watchful eye of her husband. Trapped within the walls of his shadowed home, Amelia slowly discovers Everest’s true nature—a possessive, haunting force cloaked in charm.
In solitude, she forms a fragile bond with Billy, Everest’s enigmatic part man, part goat—a creature of the forest who sees not just her sorrow but the fierce power stirring beneath it. As forbidden feelings grow, Amelia must master her emerging powers before they consume or betray her—or risk losing any chance at freedom forever.
Vampire’s Prison, book two in The Heathen’s Creek Series, is a gothic tale where fairy tale dreams rot into nightmare—blending sizzling paranormal romance with chilling horror and eerie folklore.
She’s done it again! I didn’t even know I could read a book so fast! The way Anna weaves in the mystery and the clues is just perfection. The way she builds the characters while keeping the story moving is a skill. I thoroughly enjoyed book 2 and the ending’s cliff hanger left my jaw on the floor!!
Wow! I have seen authors improve as they add more books to their backlist. But Heathen's Creek: Vampire's Prison is an improvement over its predecessor (Haunted Love) in every imaginable way. Don't get me wrong. I liked Haunted Love, despite the fact that it is outside of my comfort zone. But this followup brings out the best of Hellström's talent. Vampire's Prison is a fast-paced blend of urban fantasy, gothic romance and folk horror that does not lose the sum of its parts.
Mia returns as our protagonist. She is so much more relatable this time, because she feels more like an active character than a passenger/audience surrogate. She has a struggle for the reader to relate to, and this struggle is effectively conveyed.
The magical world of Heathen's Creek feels so alive. The diverse cast of creatures is utilized sparsely, in a way that paves the way for further exploration in future installments, while also engaging the reader's imagination. Billy, a minor character in Book 1, now becomes a huge part of the story in Book 2. Despite his dark nature, I could not help but loving the guy. There's something captivating about a character who is both intimidating and endearing.
My favorite aspect of this story was the horror elements, and I think Hellström shines the most when she is getting the opportunity to take the readers through the dark of the wood and instill a sense of pure dread at the dark magics that lurk in the corners of her world. I know that the spicy elements are why a lot of people read this series, and I know that is important to this genre. But my favorite elements were the horror elements. They are beautifully written in that macabre way only captured in gothic fiction.
This book has a love triangle, but a well-written one. I could easily see fans taking sides between Billy and Everest and getting into the adult version of the Twilight ship wars. PSA Billy is way better.
I don't read explicit books or romantacy that much. And when I do, it tends to not be my thing. This, however, is my thing. Dark magic in the woods, ancient mythic creatures and secret witch's sabbaths... yes please. And those ideas are presented in the package of a well constructed story with relatable characters and excellent pacing. Gothic romantacy fans... you're going to LOVE this!
This book rules. I like good characters that I can get attached to in stories. I liked the characters a lot in Hellström‘s first book, and once again I enjoyed keeping up with the characters of this book. Overall the story is a great blend of romance and horror. I would most definitely recommend checking this book out.
