Alexandra Warren is a contemporary romance author with over thirty works to date, all of which intentionally center Black love. She is also the co-founder of Girl, Have You Read…, a digital platform dedicated to Black romance written by Black authors.
When she’s not in front of her computer, she enjoys traveling, spending time with family, watching sports, and clearing her DVR. Alexandra is a proud native of Omaha, Nebraska, but she currently calls Houston, Texas home.
One minute Lauren was livin’ her best 21 year old life during Spring Break and the next she’s sending a picture of a positive pregnancy test to the NFL player she just knew she was goin’ to marry. Unfortunately for her, the fairytale did not pan out as she thought it would. Carmelo did a complete 180 and the gentle running back she met in Miami no longer exists. He stopped answering her phone calls, he stopped replying to her texts, and then his mama got involved. You can guess how that went. Six years later Lauren and Carmelo are in a good place and they have a healthy co-parenting relationship but, my boy wants that ole thang back. He just has to convince Lauren to give him another chance. Second Down was a cute and witty second chance romance. Lauren’s inner monologues were the star of the book. Girlfriend had me cacklin’ from start to finish. And lil Ms. Carsyn was a whole 6-year-old op but, I was here for it. Second Down was the perfect book to wrap up my holiday reading.
This novella was lowkey too short for me. I wanted more from these two, and I will say the story is complete. Sometimes apologizing for mistakes made works. I am so ready for whatever Alexandra gives us next!
I’m not usually a fan of second-chance romances, but this one really worked for me. It felt fresh, witty, and was such an easy read. I’m not one to backslide, but hey—do you, boo. I loved the FMC’s inner monologue, especially because it’s something I’m typically not into—but here, it was funny, fun, and actually moved the story forward instead of stalling it. I also appreciate a man who can admit his faults and genuinely apologize. Growth? Accountability? We love to see it. Now… that mama? Hmm. I don’t know. I kind of wanted her to actually see them back together, actively working through their issues. And baby Carsyn??? LOL. I loved how she basically reeled her parents back together—like, y’all better get it together, and quickly.
The story was short, but it packed a punch. I definitely want more.
This was super cute. I love the dynamics we got to see within the different relationships featured. And it had the perfect amount of spice for the length.
I absolutely loved this! I was kicking my feet and giggling. Lauryn's inner monolog was hilarious. I could have read a lot more of these characters. But also this was the perfect length for what it was.
