3.75 🌟. I enjoyed, and it could have been a four star read, but nobody’s perfect – not even the authors who wrote it.
Macroeconomics terms in chapter four and five, could have been explained better. Instead of coming up with unnecessary wordy definition for certain terms, the authors could have explained many terms in one simple sentence.
The chapter on derivatives was painful. I understand the topic is not easy for many to understand, but yeah that chapter was something else…. ( I laughed when I saw the summary of that chapter consisting of less than 7 bullet points, but the entire chapter was thicker than a mammoth)
One thing, which bothered me while reading were the redundancies.
Other than that, it’s a good book. Can recommend it
Lol I didnt know this was on goodreads. Passed the first exam, on to volume II now. They put the same emphasis of instruction on easy things as they did for highly complex things so... not ideal but it's fine.
In terms of general knowledge and explanation, I felt it was perfect. This text was all I needed to prepare for the exam and pass on first attempt, no classes or modules necessary.
It does a great job at sticking to the important information and basic principles. Plus gives examples to help understand which I always appreciate and need.
Quite a short read for the amount of material covered too. Would highly recommend if entering any field of finance.
I think it’s takes you from the most basic concepts to having a wide variety of knowledge. Certain concepts could be expanded on further but overall a decent textbook. The sections on calculating bond prices could be made a little more interactive.
Read this back in '08. Had to finish a volume per week because I forgot I had enrolled in this. Most boring thing ever, most painful thing to study for, but I somehow passed. Back in the day we didn't have YouTube, I'm sure you can find more interesting stuff.
This is actually a 3.5/5. If you have the perspective, you will find it better written than that of Chinese mainland or its Hong Kong SAR equivalent because there's a hint of practical element in it and more reference to actual information sources and/or documents to read.
Very good summary of the different instruments available. Going beyond the basic laundry list into a bit of the reasoning behind why each product would be chosen.
