"Promise me Sadie, when you finally escape, you'll fight. Fight to live. Fight to love. Fight to be free."I am his champion. The crowds gather to watch me fight. Abused. Beaten. Starved. Confined to the dark. He created a monster. She's finally breaking free. My escape lands me in the clutches of a Fae who whispers sweet promises of his protection. So long as I do as I am told. He dares to dig his claws into me. The General will not stand in my way of freedom. If a dagger to the heart is what he seeks... then I'll drive it deep. My name is Sadie, and I will no longer be a victim.
Dragons. Kingdoms divided by lies and betrayal. Pain.
The day I find my mate inside this fighting pit... the entire kingdom better pray to the gods that she survives. I want what is mine. No one will stop me. The man who spent 25 years torturing my mate, dares to hunt her down. He offers our King a deal. Ten lives in exchange for one. For Sadie. If we refuse, he'll kill them all. As General and Rayne's right hand, I'd like to believe he would never betray me. But a war is brewing between the Kingdoms. Humans are smuggled through the border in exchange for loyalty. And we are on the losing side. But I've got a secret. One I was forced to hide.
Wow. This one is hurtful. The cliff hanger… are we sure Rebecca Yarros didn’t write this? Cause this is just like OS… get me hooked and *boom* book finished. I need book 2 like NOW!! I’m not giving it 5 stars cause I’m salty it’s over… but this was a good one to dive back into the fantasy realm
I started this book with high expectations, and I have to say, it did not disappoint. From the very beginning it pulls you in with a plot that seems to whisper “Take my hand,” and before you know it you're RUNNING. I was all about the action! This book is so engaging that I didn’t feel the urge to constantly check the percent or page number I was at. It just held my attention from start to finish.
We have multiple POV’s with Sadie being our MFC. Sadie herself is sassy and witty. She’s fierce despite all she has been through, and I loved her attitude.
That said, I’ll mention a small caveat: I wish there was a bit more depth when it comes to the magic system because it seems very interesting, especially the bond and interactions between dragons and their riders. I think exploring that further could add even more richness to the story, but there’s always a chance book 2 will shed more light on this. Regardless, it’s plenty captivating as is. This is my reason for giving 4 stars, but I can easily see book 2 being a 5 star read for me.
Now.. what’s the deal with Jonas? What does it all mean? I need to know more about that immediately, and don’t even get me started on the ending! It had me kicking and screaming for the next book. I literally put my hand out and said, “NOOO!” Sadie’s quick flip caught me off guard, but I also understand she has been through a lot and doubt is probably an easy to seed plant when you feel like you can only rely on yourself.
Overall, I really enjoyed this story and can’t wait to see where it goes next! Definitely recommend picking this up. 😊
I really had no idea what I was getting into opening the first page of this book, but I am so glad I picked it up! Sadie is the ultimate FMC. Sure, she's got some preeeeetty heavy baggage, but it doesn't stop her from being an absolute bad*ss. I loved the take on mates and love, as it was completely unique to what I'm used to in fantasy. The MMC was so much more realistic than I expected, allowing Sadie to take her time and do her own thing. I spent most of the book making guesses and not being correct (or at least not yet!) so I appreciated staying intrigued the entire time. I devoured this whole book in just a couple of hours, but I left myself disappointed because now I have to wait on book two because I didn't realize I'd be so mad about a cliffhanger!
Where my demons hide was a very pulling book I am an avid reader an had to tell myself to slowdown and look at the details I cant wait to read the next book in this series it had me on the edge of my seat pulled in wanting more to know more of the powers of the people, the cities, i want to know more of the courts and the animals.
I could not put this book down. i enjoyed every last word written. the hardship. the troubles. the longing. the overall character development was top teir.
Hunger Games meets Throne of Glass to me. which are 2 of my all time favorites. I need to know what happens next!!
