As a young girl, Eleni Pangalos spent her summers on the breathtaking Greek island of Kefalonia, growing up on her grandparents’ vineyard. Those were the happiest days of her life, spending all her time with Nikko, her closest friend and, later, her first love, until her family was killed in an automobile accident, changing her idyllic existence forever. Grief-stricken, Eleni returned to the States with her grandparents, never intending to set foot on the island again.
Years later, her beloved grandfather has passed away. As the last living member of Eleni’s immediate family, she depended on his strength and love. Now she was truly all alone. Alone and destined to step onto that island’s soil once more. A place that at one time filled her with happy memories now only reminded her of unimaginable loss.
But when she arrives, Eleni finds a family ready to embrace her as their own. From them, she learns about the bond between her and Nikko’s families—rooted deep in the vineyard and loyal friendship. This foundation and history inspire a new purpose and offer her a chance at happiness, if only she could break through the walls Nikko had erected to protect himself from the heartache of losing her all those years ago.
Like the vines of the Robola grapes, which thrive in the most unlikely conditions and rocky terrain, Eleni needs to find the same strength to overcome her past.
The Magic of Robola is about family, second chances, and the power of hope. It’s about making every day count, discovering new dreams, and being brave enough to fight for them.
Dive into a captivating second-chance romance that unfolds across dual timelines. This story weaves poignant moments with swoon-worthy scenes through a forced proximity scenario that pulls at the heartstrings.

Effie blends longing, heartbreak, and hope into a story that feels personal, whilst capturing the magic of returning to a place that once held your whole world.
Eleni returns to the island of her childhood after years of grief and self-preservation, and her story is deeply emotional. What she finds there isn’t just memories, but family, friends and a community: people who loved her long before her life shattered, and then there is Nikko, the first love she never truly left behind. Their reunion is emotionally charged with longing, old hurts, angst, tension and the pull that never faded.
With dual timelines, a romance rooted in fate, forgiveness, and family heritage, this tale comes alive. Eleni must learn to grow again, to dream again, and to believe that love can bloom even after unimaginable loss.
The Magic of Robola is a heartfelt escape for anyone who loves second chances.
Eleni Pangalos lost her parents in a tragedy and that one turn in her life set her on a different path and away from her best friend Nikko. The choices Eleni made were hard and she has done her best to try to create a fulfilling life for herself, but when tragedy strikes again years later Eleni finds herself back in the Greek Island of Kefalonia. Eleni begins to question her life, happiness and future especially every time she is with Nikko. Can she follow her heart or will her fears get in the way.
I felt for Nikko, he is reluctant to trust Eleni again. I thought the rollercoaster of emotions in this story were so in depth you felt like. you know the characters. Grab a hanky, this is an emotional one.
Review for 'The Magic Of Robola' by Effie Kammenou.
What an absolute beauty!! I cannot believe this is the first book I have read by this incredible author. What an absolutely gorgeous escapism!!
Well blooming heck Effie where have you been hiding all my life?!?! You absolutely blew it out of the ball park!!! Genuine, this has got to be one of the most beautiful novels I have ever read!!! This may be the first book I have read by this author but it most definitely will not be my last!!!
OMG!!! I absolutely LOVED this gorgeous page-turner and I am really really REALLY pleased that Effie has several other books than I can get lost in especially if this beauty is anything to go by. I would love for this book to be made into a series as I don't just want to but actually NEED to return to the stunning Kefalonia and Pangalos Varvos Vineyard again. Not only has Effie written a stunning storyline but she has also included several of the recipes that are made in this book along with a glossary of Greek words and expressions at the back of the book. Thank you so much for this Effie, not only am I definitely looking forward to trying out some of the recipes but I also enjoyed leaning several new Greek words and expressions. The fact that she uses these Greek words, phrases and expressions throughout the storyline definitely added to the authenticity of the storyline. This book truly is an absolute stunner. You seriously need to grab your copy of this stunner today and I can GUARANTEE that you will not regret it. You may even discover a new favourite author just as I have!!! With a beautiful storyline ram packed with stunning settings, sunshine, amazing characters, relaxation, romance, an amazing community, family, wine, second chances, heartache, friendship, culture, romance and so, so much more what more could you ever ask for??? Effie's absolutely stunning and vivid evocative descriptions really did transport me to New York, Pangalos Varvos Vineyard and Kefalonia where I could feel the sun warming my skin, smell the fresh air and sea, taste the wine and left me needing more. I was devastated when I came to the end of my holiday and had to return to Wales where although it is actually sunny at the moment it is nowhere near as nice as being in Kefalonia was! This is one of those gorgeous books that it does not matter if you are reading it next to a fire under a blanket or laying on a sunbed on the beach as Effie will whisk you away with Eleni at the turn of a page. I absolutely devoured this stunner in a couple of hours in one sitting!! There was no way I was putting it down as I was just so absorbed!! I genuinely promise you will not regret it and it will turn a frown upside down and brighten up your day if not more!! I have read loads of books this year already but this has just flown to my favourite of the year if not EVER! Honestly if you are ever in need of a break and fancy the gorgeous Kefalonia in Greece then grab this stunner and prepare to be whisked away on a beautiful holiday!!! The storyline is authentic and realistic as well as easy to read and heart-warming. There was plenty of events going on throughout and it kept me hooked from start to end, I absolutely devoured it in one sitting while mainly sitting in the garden with the sun warming my legs at the same time Eleni was being warmed by the sun in Greece making it feel like I was there along with Effie's evocative storytelling did. I loved how the story ended and I would love to read more about the life on this gorgeous Greek Island and in the beautiful Vineyard. I was absolutely devastated when I came to the end of this book as I was truly whisked away to Greece feeling the sun on my face and looking at the stunning views. I absolutely loved the gorgeous atmosphere and the warm embrace of everyone in the vineyard. The storyline was so heart-warming and it was such an easy and relaxing read and I love the fact that I wasn't just invested in the main storyline of Eleni and Nikko but also the storyline of both of their Grandfathers. Effie has truly done a beautiful job of weaving not only multiple protagonist perspectives together but also multiple timelines while also ensuring the book is a smooth read with no confusion caused. It ended absolutely perfectly and I cannot wait to read more books by this fantastic author!
What an absolutely gorgeous book!! I cannot wait to go on my next holiday with the very talented Effie Kammenou. I absolutely adored being in Greece but I also enjoyed learning and reading about each and every one of the characters and meeting new friends who I absolutely adored!!! An absolutely unforgettable holiday!!!
The characters were all unique with their own realistic traits, strengths and weaknesses. It was intriguing to watch Eleni's character grow, develop and change throughout the the storyline. I absolutely adored Eleni and was completely invested in her through every single page until the very end of the book. She is such a likeable person that she is definitely one of those characters that I am gutted she is fictional. My fingers and toes were crossed throughout for her to get her much deserved happily ever after. I was also completely invested in the Nikko and his family. Effie's amazing evocative writing skills brought every single one of the characters to life as much as possible and they leapt out of the pages as well as the stunning atmosphere!!! Anyway, I best not say anymore as don't want to give anything else away for future readers!! It's just so easy talking about this fantastic book and so much I want to tell you all about but I really need to control myself!!! Needless to say I absolutely adored each and every character each for a different reason. All characters worked perfectly with the storyline and I would love to meet them again and cannot wait to get stuck into more books by this incredible author!
Well done Effie Kammenou on an absolutely gorgeous book!!! I will definitely be looking for your books any time I need an amazing escapism to get lost in!!! This is exactly why I would like to welcome you to my favourite authors club!
Overall an absolutely perfect light hearted, stunning unputdownable escapism that will sweep you off your feet and land you in Greece.
How beautiful is this cover ! Once I started I couldn’t put it down and I forced myself to do so because I really didn’t want it to end 🥰📚
Eleni I lost both her parents as a young girl and her grandfather raised her , my heart broke into many pieces for her because not only did she loose her parents but her island and all she knew when having to move the USA 💔
We meet up with Eleni again after an event and she’s exhausted especially having to deal with social media fangirls ( I think they would tire anyone ) but her assistant Angela is a gem and really supportive which is much more than I could say for her boyfriend Gregory🤷♀️
Eleni has been dating Gregory for a while but she’s not feeling it and yes he’s handsome but I found him condescending and while she’s out having dinner with him she receives a calling that her world , her grandfather has had a heart attack 💔and that me in a blubbering mess 😭 Gregory ‘s lack of empathy has me seeing red and finally she calls it off with him and heads to Greece to put her grandfather to rest 🥲
When she arrives in Greece she’s received with open arms and despite it being a sad time it’s also a beautiful time because she’s enveloped with love , support , community, friends and shared memories 🥰
Her childhood friendship with Nikki is rekindled and a beautiful romance unfolds and between you and me I think she’s always loved him 🥰
Having experienced loss recently o really lived eleni’s heartache and she is so identifiable 🥰 this is a story filled with laughter , tears , yummy recipes , rich heritage , reconciliation and learning to live and dream life to its fullest 🥰
The Magic of Robola by Effie Kammenou 5 of 5 Stars This is an enjoyable, engaging, and emotional second chance romance, which kept me happily turning the pages. Eleni spent her summers with her grandparents on their vineyard on the Greek island of Kefalonia. However, a family tragedy resulted in the grief-stricken Eleni returning to the States. Years later after her grandparents death Eleni decides to return to the island that she has both happy memories off, but which also reminds her of her unimaginable loss.
She is warmly welcomed back and learns of the deep bond and loyal friendship between the families rooted in the vineyard. However, her childhood friend Nikko, who became her first love, and who she left behind is distant. Eleni can’t seem to break through the walls he put up after the heartbreak of loosing her all those years ago. Eleni draws strength from the vines of the Robola grapes to overcome her past, make every day count, and discover new dreams.
When Eleni and Nikko find themselves in a forced proximity scenario the two get a second chance at love, as long as they can put the past behind them. This heartwarming and at times heartbreaking romance kept me captivated throughout. I liked that the story was told across dual timelines. Both Eleni and Nikko are likeable and relatable characters, whose chemistry came across clearly in the narrative. The beautiful backdrop of Kefalonia was brought vividly to life through the wonderfully detailed descriptive narrative. I felt fully immersed in the story and infested in Eleni and Nikko’s romance.
The Magic of Robola follows event planner Eleni, who has to return to Keffalonia from New York for the first time in ten years after the passing of her closest relative. Now feeling more alone than ever, she has to deal with her unhappy relationship with her boyfriend back in New York, juggling the business she’s built in New York and the business she’s been left in Greece, and coming to terms with her unresolved feelings for her childhood best friend and ex-boyfriend, Nikko. My favourite character was Eleni - she had her flaws but she acknowledged them, and that’s what makes her human. My least favourite character was Gregory - there’s always a Gregory. I recommend this book because it’s childhood friends to lovers and second chance love, which are two of my favourite tropes. Plus you get to see the point of view of both the female lead and male lead, as well as their family members. There’s also Greek recipes scattered throughout the book. However, I wasn’t a fan of the agreement the two families had regarding Nikko and Eleni. And whilst I agree that Eleni did need to prove herself to Nikko, I would have liked to have seen Nikko sacrifice something for Eleni like he said he had or would. “It’s the times of grief that make the moments of joy all the more precious. Ones not to be taken for granted or to let slip by when offered up like a priceless gift.”
I loved the concept and idea behind the storyline. Childhood friends turned lovers - turned strangers - reunited after a tragedy brings Eleni back to her home away from home, a little Greek Island where her family vineyard is located. While everyone else in the family is thrilled for her to be back after so many years, Nikko is not so excited after having his heart broken by Eleni too many times to count since they were teenagers. I don't feel that the character development, nor the relationship arcs were all that strong or obvious. It kind of felt that everything just conveniently fell into place rather than there being any sort of conflict (there was conflict but the resolution wasn't quite as satisfying as I had hoped it would be). That being said, the dialouge was excellent, the writing itself was very good, and I enjoyed the premise. The world building was excellent in that I could picture myself on a beach in Greece when going through those scenes.
I was given this book by the author for an honest review- What a heart warming book filled with so many emotions. Eileni grew up on a beautiful Greek island playing with her friend Nikko until her heart was broken when her parents and brother were killed in a car accident. She left with her grandparents to the states where they built a life. In all the years her feelings for Nikko never changed. Years later when her grandfather died she heads back to the island and then begins the tough decision - will she give up her life in the states and build a life here. Will Nikko let her back into his life? Can they make the vineyard a success? Grab this book for a great read!
Kammenou transports her reader to the glorious Island of Kefalonia off the West Coast of Greece in the Ionian Sea in this cozy/steamy romance. Eleni has been returning to the island with her family every summer for as long as she can remember. It is the home of her grandparents, and their small co-owned Pangalos Varvos (the combined names of the two old friends) Vineyard and winery. The winery’s patriarchs’, Kostas and Stavro, rags to semi-riches story serves as the backdrop for the encounters of Nikko and Eleni, their grandchildren.
Since childhood, Nikko and Eleni have shared an intense friendship that over time blossomed into much more and is consummated the summer of their 17th and 16th years. Returning from their tryst, Eleni is horrified to learn that both parents and her little brother were killed in a freak accident. Their bodies are interred there. Three years later, she returns to bury the beloved grandmother who raised her following the accident, and now at 29, for the burial of her grandfather. With no remaining family, Eleni has come to see her once magical island as only a source of grief. Following each burial, she flees Kefalonia and Nikko’s abiding love, as quickly as she possibly can.
The author’s style is both engaging and descriptive. She vividly word-paints the beauty of the island and the connection between the lovers. Good writing elicits emotions. At turns I found myself lost in the story’s milieu, followed by frustration with the actions of Eleni, who waffled between melodrama and martyrdom. That said, the over-arching story, the setting, the sense of history and loss far outweigh negative feelings regarding the book. Drawing from her personal connection to the setting, Kammenou includes numerous recipes mentioned in the text, and rounds out the novel with and index of common Greek words and phrases along with their translations. Over all a 4 star read.
Effie writes the most wonderful Greek romances. There is something about the setting in small Greek towns that just make magical stories. The Yiayia's, the scenery, the vineyards, its just beautiful. This was both heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. I went through multiple emotions reading this. I also couldn't put it down. I read this in two sittings, only stopping to sleep! I was completely immersed from the off. Nikko and Eleni have been the best of friends since children, there was no surprise then as they grew older that they fell in love, but with an ocean between them, as Eleni returns home to New York after each summer, they struggle with their teenage emotions, their distance, and the tragedy that keeps happening around them, and it seems impossible they can ever find their way through. The chapters flick back and forth through their lives, giving dual POVs from Nikko and Eleni, though it is mostly set in present day with Eleni's voice at the helm. This really gives us a great overview of their lives and what they have been through, and their family relationships. There is so much good to say both about this book, and the author. I would absolutely recommend reading this, and Effie's back catalogue, and I wait patiently for more to come. This is an auto-read author for me!
I have read a few of this author's books before, so when I had the opportunity to read this new one I jumped at the chance.
The author's books have a heavy Greek influence and this one is set on the beautiful island of Kefalonia (where I briefly spent some time last year).
The chapters are narrated by some of the characters with the bulk of them by Eleni. They are also told over a timeline, from when the vineyard was set up, up to the present day. This gives us a lot of background and perspective on the main characters and a way I enjoy reading.
Family is a huge part of the story as well as the relationship between Eleni and Nikko. It is one of the few books where I haven't disliked any of the main characters. They are all well written and relatable. I especially love the yiayias, what wonderful characters.
Food usually plays a part in Effie's books and this one is no different. We are treated to recipes interspersed between the chapters, which all sound absolutely delicious. We also have a glossary at the end with the meaning of any Greek words used.
Effie has a way of writing beautiful heartwarming, uplifting and emotional stories and I think I went through a range of emotions whilst reading this.
A definite can't put down book for me which I would highly recommend. I hope there are more books to come featuring this family and vineyard.
"The Magic of Robola" is set on the Greek island of Kefalonia, among the unique Robola grape vines found only on the island. This beautiful story explores themes of young love, tragedy, family, second chances, heartbreak, and rekindled love. Effie Kammenou writes so lyrically about her beloved Greece that it almost becomes a character within the story itself.
The narrative flows smoothly, with flashbacks that enrich the main storyline. Although the multiple points of view could be confusing, they instead provide a well-rounded perspective that allows readers to connect with the characters.
Eleni, who grew up in New York, spent her summers in Kefalonia at the vineyard owned by her grandfather and his best friend. The two families have deep roots, having come together after the men met as young adults and decided to build a vineyard.
As a child, Eleni was especially close to Nikko, and their friendship evolved into something deeper as they grew older. However, a horrific tragedy caused Eleni to leave the island, vowing never to return, not even for Nikko.
Returning to Kefalonia to lay her grandparents to rest gives Eleni the chance to confront old wounds and discover what she truly wants from life—and whether that life can include Nikko. Sometimes, the very things we try to escape turn out to be the ones that bring us back full circle.
Thank you LBT for having me on this book review tour and for my gifted copy of this epub.
Absolutely loved this book. Childhood friends to lovers is a top favorite trope of mine. I had a childhood friend that I still think about today and wonder would have made it if we stayed together. I wish I would have for sure.
We follow Eileni who I mean I’m jealous of cause she grew up on a Greek island. What more could you ask for ?! But she goes through it. I mean she loses her whole family in a car accident and is forced to move to the states with her grandparents all the while thinking of her childhood friend Nikko. Gosh this book has all the feels it really does. Eileni gets the opportunity to go back to the islands after her grandfathers death let’s just say wow. I got a picture of the islands in my head and sounded beautiful and I could totally picture myself on a beach in Greece !!! Oh how I want that now lol.
Now Eileni has to figure out if Nikko can ever forgive her for breaking his heart all those years ago oh and figure out the vineyard!! Not to much right lol. I loved the writing style and how good this book was.
Overall definitely want more by this author. This is a must read. I actually think I’ll buy this book so I can pass along to my friends!!
This isn't the first book I've read by the author. The Magic of Robola is an amazing book. I didn't want it to end when it did. I love this book and I couldn't put it down. It will tug at your heart strings and you will get teary eyed.
Eleni is an event planner and is seeing a guy. She isn't sure where the relationship is going and she isn't sure she wants it to continue. When her grandfather passes away she breaks it off with the boyfriend. Going back home isn't what she wants to do, but she has to. Going home means there's a chance of running into Nikko. Everyone she has ever loved is now buried in the ground. She pokes around the vineyard and says this when she discovers a new building: “Sure, if I’m not interrupting your work. I think it’s the only place I haven’t nosed around this morning.”
Nikko has never stopped loving Eleni. He may be a little upset with her but he gets over it. Watching her bury another family member breaks his heart for her. Knowing he's got his parents and grandparents while she is alone. He tells her this when she breaks down: “I’ve got you, Brooklyn.”
This was one of the first authors I read when I first started reviewing within the bookish world.
After reading Love Is What You Bake Of It - and absolutely devouring it in one sitting - I went on to complete that series and read another beautiful trilogy and still wanted more for this wonderful writer.
You can imagine my joy then, when I spotted this new release heading our way and of course, I jumped at the chance to dive head first back into the beautiful settings and storyline created by Effie.
Having learned from my previous reads, I buckled in for a bumpy emotional ride and popped those tissues close by.
Effie has a knack of creating the most beautiful characters who burrow into your heart from the very start and carry you along through their story.
Here, we follow Eleni as she returns home to the Greek island of Kefalonia after years in the US with her grandparents.
I loved that we followed her and Nikko's story over a dual timeline which really allows us to build on the relationship and discover their initial love alongside the events of the present day as they rediscover each other and the feelings that never really left them.
As ever, I was completely hooked from the first page and could not put this down!
Such a moving storyline and beautifully written and developed characters - but I can't gloss over the immersive setting which is so well placed within the plot that I was totally transported to the island along with everyone.
I'm really not a big traveller, but Effie always makes me hanker for a long summer in the beautiful Greek islands.
Another fantastic read and an author I could honestly read every single day!
I hope there will be more books coming soon and I can't wait to add them to my shelves!
A few things about this book.. I love the personal notes by the author. It helps me immediately feel connected to the book with the personal sentiment. I also love the recipes of certain foods mentioned by the characters. Seeing the recipes helped me visualize the food better and it also gave me ideas to venture out of my standard dinner meals. The author either knows the culture or seems to have done their fair share of research prior to incorporating the different cultures in this novel. The characters are all enjoyable in this book. I quite enjoyed getting to know Eleni and Nikko as the main characters. My only complaint is I got a little confused in the beginning/middle of the novel when they switched point of views to the grandparents. It was nice to get their point of view but I feel like it could have been shared in a different way. Overall, I love a best friend/long time friend romance. I could eat them up all day. This author is new to me and has quickly been added to my “must read” author list.
"It's never too late to come home. And home isn't always where you were born or lived most of your life. Home doesn't have to be a place at all. Sometimes, it's a person who fills every corner of your being."
In all honesty, I could see this book being made into a movie. It check marks all the boxes.
*a vineyard on a beautiful island *the loss of loved ones and the overwhelming grief that comes with that *young first (and only) love *an (ex)boyfriend that is a jerk *family and lots of food/wine *the Greek culture *second chances
Reading this book made me want to pack my bags, head to Kefalonia, and start growing my own vineyard! The author writes in a way that makes the story feel like an old friend. She truly helps you feel the "magic" of Robola (wine).
Possible trigger warnings: there is some cussing throughout the book, and a couple spicy scenes (I just flipped past those, and it didn't affect my enjoyment of the overall story for me at all.) And as mentioned before, there is death of loved ones portrayed along with grief.
Overall, a wonderful read!!
*Thank you to Love Book Tours, the author, and the publisher for a complimentary copy. All opinions expressed are my own.*
I thought this was a really heartwarming read. Eleni had been through so much loss and heartache in her lifetime: losing her parents and brother in car accidents, leaving her first love behind, her grandmother passing away and then her grandfather. She carried so much grief and guilt. Her actions were quite understandable. However, when she has to return to Greece to bury her grandfather, the island brings emotions back to the forefront, emotions she thought she had buried a long time ago. I loved how she was welcomed back into the fold with open arms and how Nicco’s family accepted her as one of their own. Nicco had never stopped loving her, but was deeply hurt. In truth she had never stoped loving him. Their love story was very sweet once they got back on track. The author’s description of the island was absolutely stunning. I could see it so clearly. I need to go visit! I absolutely loved this book.
As soon as I saw the front cover of this book, I knew it was going to be a sun soaked, heart‑tugging escape to Kefalonia.
This story swept me straight onto the breathtaking Greek Island and all the emotional depth you’d hope for in a second chance romance.
The author beautifully weaves past and present, letting you slip right into the characters’ journeys and understand the choices that shaped them.
The forced‑proximity setup is done so well, and I couldn’t help but swoon over the chemistry simmering between the leads: the longing, the tension was loud and clear.
This book is perfect for readers who love a good second‑chance love story, emotional healing, and the courage it takes to face the past. If you’re craving a romantic escape with depth, charm, and a stunning sense of place, this one belongs on your shelf.
The Magic of Robola makes you want to sell your house, move to Kefalonia, and buy a winery. Effie Kammenou has created a story that offers (what I assume, seeing I've never been to Greece) authentic Greek culture.
Nikko and Eleni have you wondering how many chances first, and real, love needs. You root for this couple throughout the story while getting a lesson in running a winery and what Greek family looks like. The inclusion of recipes, and quotes at the beginning of certain chapters helps create a soulful read.
Kammenou writes about that pull between our head and our heart. I love how Eleni's current life and past in Kefalonia weaves into a beautiful story of love and passion. This was a story that I didnt want to put down and was sad to part with as quickly as I did. I had the feeling at the end that she left it open for a companion novel?? Fingers crossed.
This book got five stars from me because it showcases many of the real things that happen in life. Love, loss, grief, and happiness!!! It also features one of my favorite places on earth, Greece. This is a second chance romance that shows you life changes whether you want it to or not but you have to roll with it. Overcoming a past that you want to learn from is one of the hardest things to do. This FMC strives to leave her past behind for a new start with her first love. The Greek vineyard where she spent many days with her best friend who eventually becomes her first love were idyllic and happy. A tragedy separates her from this happy life. She comes back much later hoping to reconnect with her first love. Second chances are a life changing experience and this book explores it all. Definitely gave me all the feels.
This book had me in absolute pieces from the very beginning. From heartbreak to love, from sadness to heartwarming, this book had it all for me. The amount of grief and heartbreak that Eleni goes through had me so sad. The joy, and pain, of Kefalonia, the island where she felt happiest that now fills her with sorrow. Her initial plan is to get in, and get out. She’s going to show up, lay her grandfather to rest, do what needs done and go back to her life. But that’s not what really happens. I was a big fan of the families relationships and the history of the families. Peter and Yanni’s antics when they were younger made me smile. Eleni standing up for herself against Gregory and making the decisions all her friends were hoping for. The way that Nikko’s family accepted Eleni and wanted to help her and keep her connected to her family history.
This book totally transported me to the sun, sea and sand of beautiful Kefalonia in the Ionian Sea. Set in the present, but dipping back to ten and thirteen years ago it’s a complex love story around characters Eleni Pangalos and Nikko Varvos. Their on/off relationship is hampered by geography, obligation and repeated grief. Love, loss, legacy and family are at the heart of the book. I loved the vineyard backdrop, I didn’t know about the Robola grape! With the descriptions of the food, wine and landscape this book is a little bit of Grecian escape. I would love to visit the island one day. A great read.
The Magic of Robola is a beautiful, emotional, second chance romance mainly set on the island of Kefalonia in Greece. Eleni has endured so much loss in her life and your heart just breaks for her. I was rooting for her and Nikko the whole book even though she was extremely stubborn at times. I loved the imagery of the vineyards and island and found myself imagining I was there. The recipes of the food the characters were eating throughout the book was a nice touch and I am definitely going to be trying out that eggplant spread! Overall, this was a pleasant read with not too much drama.
Thank you so much to Effie and Love Books Tours for this physical copy to read and review!
Eleni spends every summer on the Greek island of Kefalonia with her family. She grows especially close to a family friend, Nikko. Their bond deepens over the years. After a heartbreaking tragedy one summer, Eleni chooses never to return. When her grandfather passes away, she’s forced to return to the island. She must decide on her relationship with Nikko and questions where she truly belongs. She struggles between returning to New York or giving in to the pull of home and family. She must face the strong feelings she still has for Nikko. She cares for him, but is not sure if she is ready to give up her career. Plus, she is flourishing helping out at the vineyard.
One of my favorite touches was the recipes included throughout the book!! They’re such a lovely addition and make the story feel even more special. This was a heartfelt and touching read.
A unique take on the Hallmark trope of going to your home town and rekindling an old romance. I feel the tragedy bringing our main character home really started this book off on strong emotions and continued throughout.
The Author has an engaging way with their smooth writing style and detailed character and world building. I really feel like I was able to immerse myself into the book right from the beginning. The touch of flashbacks are a nice added layer, makes you feel more of a connection as well.
This is my first read by this Author and I can tell they have extreme dedication to their work. Their note to the readers at the beginning, the quotes, the recipes and the glossary at the back, are all very thought out and personalized touches to their book and their readers.
This was my first read by Effie Kammenou and I really enjoyed it. I loved the second-chance romance trope in this book. Despite all the loss that Eleni has suffered, she had to push through life. When she losses her grandfather, the man who was everything to her, life becomes pretty hard for her and she has to return to the island of Kefalonia. The same island she lost her best friend and first love Nikolai. Breakdown the wall around her heart to let him in was not easy because it took Nikolai a long time to trust her. The rollercoaster of emotions on the book was so good.
The Magic of Robola is a great second chance story. Eleni has lost her parents, her younger brother her grandparents then raise her. Her grandmother passed away then all she has left is her grandfather. When he also passes unexpectedly Eleni is grief stricken. She takes him to be buried with the family at their vineyard. Where she has to be around Nikko her love from the past. Their families are rooted together in the vineyard and help Eleni see she is not alone. This was a very good story of hope, finding yourself again, and realizing family is what you make it. Great book!
Not a bad read at all. It starts with a gripping, powerful scene and crashes (beautifully) into the rest of the story. Eleni has lost so much in her life—family, a home, and love. I rather enjoyed the fact that the story wasn’t JUST about the romantic love. It brought into light familial love and the love one has for their roots.
The descriptions were vivid and so clear, and I wanted nothing more than to climb into the pages and visit Kefalonia with Nikko, Eleni, and their families and friends.
Such a heartwarming story and easy—yet engaging—read.
The Magic of Robola is a beautiful book about loss, homecoming, and a sweet second chance romance. Effie Kammenou has such a way with words. The descriptors, the emotions. It’s like being transported into the book with Eleni in NYC and then in Greece. I have already scoped out the other books by Ms. Kammenou and put them on my TBR list as I fell in love with her writing while reading this book. 5 out of 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Highly, highly recommend!
