First they killed her brother. Now they're coming for her.

Kara Greims knows the law. She knows corruption. She knows that in NorMetro's courts, money always wins.

What she doesn't know is why her brother Jacob died—until she unlocks a door that changes everything.

Behind that door lies a legacy of weapons and books, obligations and enemies, and questions that multiply with every answer she finds. Someone has been watching her family for generations. Someone is sending her cryptic threats. Someone believes she inherited more than just her brother's apartment.

The closer Kara gets to the truth, the more she realizes Jacob wasn't just murdered—he was eliminated. Now she has weeks to uncover a conspiracy that spans from Neo Los Angeles to federal courtrooms, from ancient traditions to modern crimes.

Every step forward triggers new dangers. Every ally hides their own agenda. And every choice pushes her further from the lawyer she was toward something she might not survive becoming.

Can Kara expose her brother's killers before the deadline expires? Or will she discover that some inheritances are too deadly to claim?

When justice becomes personal, how far would you go? Dive in to find out.

Good start

Kara goes from a lawyer trying to help the innocent and keep her belief in the justice system, to learning there is a paranormal side to life and it wants her help. I really like the way Kara takes to her new situation, learning from a skeleton's head that is possessed by a Grimm would pretty much freak most people out. The parallel universe that the story takes place in is very unique and that along with the characters and the storyline definitely kept my reading. I look forward to more of Kara's story and the team she is building to bring back justice.

This is the best book I’ve read in a while. An alternate reality filled with Zeppelin balloons where the World Wars never took place, but corruption runs unchecked. The main character is instructed to believe in fairy tales, and regularly converses with a Skull possessed by one of the Brothers Grimm. Kara Greims is a kick butt lawyer who moonlights as a superhero and seeks justice when conventional means fail. This book made me laugh and kept me on my toes. I’ll definitely be reading the next book in this series.

Excellent

Wow!!! How is this author so familiar with legalities? I couldn't put it down and I know nothing of the world. I need to read "about the author". I need to know about his current and past life. I chose to read this book because I'm a full fleged sci-fi fan and I was for a moment disappointed when space ships didn't appear. But since it at least takes place in the year 2090, I guess that qualifes it as sci-fi.🙂

Really enjoyed this book

Great pace, great characters and sub characters. Nice use of this book to set up further ones, with just enough intrigue to keep readers returning. But, if you don't want to, you don't feel like you will miss out. The books feel balanced and are well written.

A fascinating take on vigilante justice

The heroine here is a lawyer, and therefore does NOT want to be Batman. Her brother is murdered, and she finds there are people who may really be above the law. The parallel universe aspects are fascinating. I’m definitely going to read the next book in the series.

Good easy read

+s - likeable enough protagonist, unusual story arc, not difficult to get into

-s - a lot of tell not show, lack of character development.

I don’t recommend you don’t read it but also not saying this is a must read.

Great start to a new series

Loving the premise on which the plot is based - a legal system above mere national ones, that serves justice and cannot be corrupted.

Greatly looking forward to the next volume.

So far, this new series is very close to rekindling the excitement I had when reading the original Kurtherian Gambit series.

Nope

I keep trying with this author but it’s always the same. Woke, progressive, in your face nonsense. I read to get away from that, not have it shoved down my throat in FICTIONAL BOOKS!

This Is Not Your Mama's Lawyer!!

This is a great beginning to my new favorite series. Kara is awesome, and Grimm is amazing. I would want them guarding my back for real.
