Gage is a pack enforcer. He fears no man, beast, or rival Alpha. But he is absolutely terrified of Mr. Bigglesworth.
As a wolf shifter, Gage is supposed to be at the top of the food chain. Fate, however, has a sick sense of humor. His fated mate is Simon, a sunny, sweet-tempered human who runs a sanctuary for "emotionally complex" cats.
Gage wants to claim his mate. His inner wolf is howling for Simon. But to get to him, Gage has to cross a minefield of dander, claws, and a hairless Sphynx who guards Simon’s virtue like a dragon guarding gold.
Every date is a disaster. Gage tries to growl seductively; he ends up wheezing. He tries to lean in for a kiss; a tabby launches a tactical strike on his leather jacket. Simon just thinks the big, bad biker is shy and "overcome with emotion."
But Gage is done holding his breath. He’s stocking up on industrial-strength antihistamines and whisking Simon away to a cat-free zone. Because once the sneezing stops, the gloves are coming off. Gage is ready to show Simon that while he might hate cats, he knows exactly how to make a human purr.
Definitely a fast paced and perfunctory MM shifter romance. There is like no drama, not even low drama, and what I would consider to be mild heat. 1/5 peppers on the spice scale. The entire book felt a lot like the author (who I'm just now realizing is a male, which might explain things) wrote the plot in bullet points and went down the line to make sure each bullet was covered. And while those points might have been written into the story line, it was done so with very little subterfuge or blending between points. The whole premise of the story is that Gage (shifter MMC) meets Simon (human MMC) and knows immediately that he's his mate. Simon runs a cat sanctuary and his whole life revolves around the animal. When he's at home, he has 12 cats that he's living with. Gage is extremely allergic to cats and doesn't like them much. It's a whole werewolves against cats thing. Simon and Gage have to figure out how their relationship works while melding those two extremely conflicting factors into one life. That's it, that's the entire plot, drama, and ending. The story ends with a HEA and their issue is solved. You've got the whole dedicated shifter mate who would do anything to make his mate happy vibes going on and some steam. But the spice wasn't anything to write home about and the writing of this one left something to be desired.
So, this newest addition to the series is the closest to the first book of the series, Swipe Right on the Alpha, in terms of werewolf lore, but it's more amusing. What do you do wen you're allergic to cats, but your fated mate runs a cat sanctuary, has more cats that he fosters at home, and an extremely territorial pet cat? If you're this werewolf MC, you see the pack doctor and the pack witch and go to battle with your allergy, and you learn to compromise.
I normally like Lance’s books in the series but this one is just NO. Gabe does all the compromises and Simon just benefits from them.
For me Simon is a bit of a red flag because he doesn’t take Gabe’s allergies into consideration really. Gabe organized a weekend getaway to spend time with Simon sans cats and what does Simon do he brings one of his cats on the trip.
