Oh man! This was one dense book to get through. I have no idea what is happening and who many of these characters are. We jump all over the place and it is just assumed that we are up to date and the myriad of names, events, and places being dropped in this title.
I have been reading every issue that this Ayodele person writes about Storm for the last couple years, and I swear to God, it's still not making sense to me.
Storm has a "sanctuary." Okay, fine. For the last couple years we haven't really been given information on how exactly this sanctuary was created, in terms of funding, construction, legal standing, or even precisely which mutants are working/living here. Ayodele has been pairing Storm with random Black mutants as guest stars, and I guess they have been living/working in or for this sanctuary. That would be fine, except the writer doesn't feel the need to explain how/why Storm even knows these people. One issue we'll just randomly see Storm traveling with Frenzy. For multiple issues, Storm was inexplicably hanging out with Maggott as if they were close friends, when they had never been friends before that. Sure, it's understandable that Black mutants might want to befriend each other, but maybe you should show them actually befriending each other?
In this issue, Storm is apparently acting as a lunch lady at the sanctuary, personally serving meals to the needy?
This whole issue began with Storm having an inexplicable conversation with Wanda. Now, I have hated Wanda much more strenuously, and for a much longer period, than I have hated Storm. Don't get me wrong, I have several tirades about Wanda locked and loaded. But for the sake of this issue, their conversation at the beginning was just pointless. Wanda criticized Storm for "dipping her toes" into the magical, but not actually studying to be a true mage herself. And then Wanda wanted to keep repeating the idea that mages are all tricksters. Over and over. As if this were some important revelation that Storm would fight her on.
Did Wanda and Storm fight? I dunno. It's more like they aggressively taunted each other, and used their powers in nonviolent ways around each other while going about their days...? Storm dried her hair with wind from her hand? Wanda turned water in her water bottle into grape juice? While they muah-ha-ha-ed at each other?
The FBI are villains for, I don't know, reasons? That is a hard pill for me to swallow. I actually admire the FBI in the real world, and briefly considered joining them myself. I don't know why a few agents are apparently stalking Storm. When they interviewed Storm a few months ago, and pointed out that she wears her childhood status as a thief as a badge of honor, I was on their side in pointing out that she should actually pay for her crimes. But, apparently that was NOT the message that the writer was going for. That was a red herring. Apparently, we were supposed to be appalled that the FBI would dare to call Storm out for her own misdeeds? And, the agents are the villains, I guess? They are featured on the cover, but they had no lines in this issue.
The three sisters who appeared as villains made no real impression on me. I don't care who they are or why they have egomaniacal plans to invade Earth. I'm more annoyed by the fact this Ayodele person --whom I have concluded is just a very shitty writer-- is trying to draw his own maps describing the various dimensions within the 616 universe and how they relate to each other.
You're not a good enough writer to tackle the structure of the 616 universe, bro. In an issue of "Rogue Storm" a few months ago, you insisted that YOUR home country of Nigeria is somehow Storm's home country. It's not. Storm was born in the U.S., and her mother was from fucking KENYA. I am by no means an expert at geography, so I looked up both countries on a map. They're on opposite coasts in Africa. ... What the fuck? If you weren't African yourself, I would call that racist.
Fire this Ayodele person and burn the abomination that Storm has become. I miss how she was in the 90s.
I found this issue easier to follow, as it does reference the earlier events of the last series quite a bit and comes with helpful infographics. The throwback to the costumes was also a nice touch.
That said, it is still an unrelatable story and not a satisfactory read. At the moment, I am only following the series as Storm was a favorite character from before. She is constantly fighting for Earth and sacrificing herself. In her free time, she also likes feeding endangered animals and serving food to survivors. Not a compelling heroine at all at this point
I wanted this to improve badly. But the same issues I had with issue one are still here in issue two. Over narration and just too much dialogue that really isn't moving the story along much. Only slightly better than the last overall, I can't see myself truly investing too much longer if this continues. One more issue and I'm out, unfortunately.
