This is a really solid relaunch that plays things a little safe—but in a way that works.

Phillips leans into a grounded, street-level tone right out of the gate, and it feels like a conscious return to what makes Daredevil click: Hell’s Kitchen, moral tension, and Matt trying (and probably failing) to hold his life together. The new status quo with him as a law professor is a nice wrinkle that adds some freshness without overcomplicating things.

Garbett’s art is a standout here. Clean, dynamic, and classic Daredevil—every page feels like it understands the character visually.

The biggest question mark is the villain. There’s potential, but not a lot of depth yet, so the issue leans more on tone and setup than a truly gripping hook.

Coming off Zdarsky, this was always going to be a tough act to follow, but this feels like a confident, back-to-basics reset. Not groundbreaking, but definitely promising.

4⭐️ — cautiously optimistic

A very solid first issue. Like the idea of Matt being a teacher. Like the vibe, and the new villain could be fun. All in all, a very solid start.

IT’S GAS. It’s a great start to a new DD run, a nice mix of old and new mythology. And sets up a nice mystery at the end, I’m excited for issue 2!

Excellent first issue. Matt Murdock is an adjunct law professor years beyond his early days as an attorney. Daredevil is still protecting Hell’s kitchen, but when a new serial killers dismembering victims someone comes to warn Murdock of an impeding death.

Daredevil (2026) #1 — ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5)
A sharp, confident opening salvo that proves Stephanie Phillips isn’t easing into her Daredevil era—she’s kicking the doors in. Paired with Lee Garbett’s striking cover work and dynamic interiors, this first issue feels like a creative team already in sync, already hungry, and already pushing Matt Murdock into a space that feels both familiar and startlingly new.

This debut issue hits with the kind of momentum you want from a relaunch. Phillips writes Matt with a grounded intensity—haunted but not broken, determined but not invincible. There’s a sense of pressure on every page, like Hell’s Kitchen itself is leaning in close, whispering secrets Matt can’t quite outrun.

The introduction of OMEN is handled with just the right amount of menace and mystery. They’re not simply another costumed threat; they’re a presence, a shadow that feels tied to Matt’s past in ways he hasn’t begun to understand. The tension between what Matt thinks he knows and what OMEN actually represents gives the issue its pulse.

Garbett’s art elevates everything. The action is crisp, the silhouettes iconic, and the emotional beats land with clarity. Daredevil’s world feels alive—grimy, neon-lit, and full of ghosts that refuse to stay buried.

As first issues go, this one does exactly what it needs to: hooks you, shakes up the status quo, and promises an era of Daredevil we truly haven’t seen before. And yes—you’ll absolutely want issue #2.

YOU CAN BURY THE BODIES, BUT NEVER THE GHOSTS! Hell’s Kitchen is full of secrets—but no secret stays buried for long. A fearsome new super villain named OMEN has targeted Matt Murdock, forcing Daredevil to take the hits. But this mysterious new player isn’t what they seem, and Matt will have to learn the truth fast as he scrambles to settle into a life and status quo unlike anything he’s faced before. An all-new era of Daredevil begins here—look alive, Marvelites.

Happy reading from the Void 😈🌆⏲️📚

kinda hard to judge a story based on its first issue of only 27 pages, but color me intrigued!! im not a big comic fan nor do I know much but here are my initial thoughts:
☆ matt as a law prof has so much potential and is rlly cute and funny and im kinda shocked it hasnt been done before?
☆ this ties back into me not knowing my comics like that but the fact that matt was mayor in this universe is an insane random lore drop??? also we got a foggy mention but no actual foggy......hmmmmm interesting
☆ love how this storyline seems to be touching on how irl hell's kitchen has become gentrified
☆ also the art is rlly pretty!!! the new prophet villian looks rlly cool and im hyped to see how any legacy characters look in the style (provided they show up at all in this run of course:🕯manifesting karen and foggy and bullseye and electra and muse and fisk🕯)

A Marvel #1! Will it be accessible, will it feel like issue 26, will it make it to #5? That's the excitement/trepidation with which I approach a Marvel first issue after only 3 months. Forget about blind bags, assessing whether it's a genuine relaunch is where I get my excitement from.

So let's look at the positives - this is a (gasp) genuine #1 with a new creative team and a story completely disconnected from previous versions. Given the last time I read Daredevil he was a demon battling Priest, they've thankfully shelved that and gone for a more traditional interpretation of Daredevil. We're introduced to the new setting (Matt as a law professor) and a bunch of new supporting cast members one of which will inevitably be the new villain.
Out of the new characters I found the detective the most likeable and interesting. His not Foggy Nelson friend was giving off strong Tommy Elliot/Hush vibes and the ethics professor likely to become a love interest/villain too (I hope Phillips is about to subvert this in later issues otherwise it's very telegraphed). The new antagonist feels a bit like the Hand has undergone a brand shift with advice from the court of owls (tech billionaire already mentioned as pulling Murdoch's strings) .

Update: half of my initial review went missing. Included below is the rest of it.

The art is strong especially with Daredevil scenes. Garbett somehow evokes Frank Miller when Daredevil is standing/looking powerful and reminds me of Quesada when it comes to depicting fluid acrobatics. The talky scenes are less impressive but the script dictates those scenes and it would probably require inventive panel layouts (as seen in "Marc Spector" Moon Knight #1"). The colouring is thankfully one that keeps things clear even when set during the night allowing the pencils to shine.

It isn't clear whether this will be a more complicated story yet (like the Miller or Bendis' runs) but it has the potential to at least be a Loeb/Lee or Snyder/Capullo fun/entertaining. I'm sure those behind the book would be happy with those sales.

Speaking of sales I really hope that Marvel doesn't judge the strength of this book on launch sales which I suspect are being overinflated by the "blind bag" collector market. I think it will be better to judge by 2nd printing and #2 -#5 sales or trade sales.

Two things lowered my overall enjoyment of the book. First was that the story could turn out to be quite predictable. I'm happy to eat my words and revisit the book if that changes but I'm not willing to invest more into it.
The second was the cost of the book which felt overpriced for what turned out to be 24 pages instead of 20. I don't count a double page title as a page when it was nothing that a black banner at the top/bottom of a page could achieve. I could be half way to buy the trade collection for the price of 1 issue. Some genuine extra pages could also have been used to provide a stronger hook or cliffhanger (put a new character in peril or suggest they are a villain for example).

I realise Marvel have been very successful promoting this book but it feels a bit like they are milking readers and speculators by seeing how much they can charge for as little material as possible. I'm also not so sure how much value a new reader would get out of this book when an issue of "Transformers" covers as much for much less.

Putting those gripes aside this is a much better first issue than Marvel usually puts out. If you like more street level Marvel heroes like this Daredevil, I would suggest trying out the relatively new "Punisher" and "Mark Spector: Moon Knight".

Overall = 3/5
Writing = 3/5
Art = 4/5

Will I read the next issue? No

Wait for the trade collection? Yes, especially when the overpriced issue 1 almost pays for the trade collection. It also appears to be a title that will exist on its own and not be caught in company crossovers.

Did I need to read previous issues/series? No, this is fully accessible.

Will I read previous issues? No, this is a genuine fresh start.

I’ve been excited for this title since it was announced and it really did not disappoint. Fantastic artwork and new daring mysteries for the man without fear to face. Matt’s sure of his life as the devil of Hell’s Kitchen, he’s damn near perfected it, but his life as Matt Murdock is different. He’s taken up a job as a law professor at a local university and everyday he finds himself challenging his own methods and finding how to navigate it. It certainly doesn’t help when everyone is aware of his past and the other teachers in particular are immediately skeptical of him, lol. As Doctor Sari Ellison puts it, the teacher for the class after his:

“Former mayor, high profile defense attorney, occasional tabloid scandal and now…adjunct professor. Quite the resumé.”

But there will always be trouble in the city and a young detective in NYC has just found the latest…a body was left in plain sight sitting on the subway with their eyes gouged out. There are clear signs the victim was bound before being brought here and the detective is weary of this happening again if it hasn’t already. As night comes around Matt takes the edge off in a very similar but different setting, sitting a bar that is not Josie’s across from an old buddy from law school that is not Foggy Nelson. But the rest of his nights are still the same, facing the world without fear as he prowls the streets as daredevil. He takes on a few muggers as we get some really cool monologues as he remembers how the city had changed over the years but it’s always stuck with him anyway. We even get this really cool moment where different images of himself in different outfits flash across the panels as he beats in a mugger. But as he returns home he notices something strange…someone is there waiting for him. Luckily this mysteriously cloaked individual is pretty clueless and didn’t connect the dots of daredevil being Matt Murdock as they are here for Matt as they claim they have seen his future and must deliver him a message. Daredevil says anything that can be told to Matt can be told to him…so the messenger delivers the message, immediately moving with an agile awkward speed that caught Matt off guard as they go to try and kill him. Slashing into him with their staff and throwing him out the window…the message is that Matt will die…and now daredevil has an entirely new ghost to contend with in Hell’s Kitchen.

I like the idea of Daredevil. I love the color red. I grew up Catholic. And, sadly, I'm an attorney. His aesthetics and mission all appeal to me. But, I have found that I don't typically read Daredevil very often because of its tone. It's so often grimdark, and the writers sometimes go out of their way to minimize supernatural elements.

I'm giving this a shot. Nothing too remarkable so far, but I like that the unknown villain at the end appears to have a power.

However, as far as Matt's lecture for a contract class goes? He's already getting stuff wrong. There is no contract in signing a receipt. For the most part, if you purchase something at a cash register, that is NOT a contract, it's a transaction. A contract is a promise-for-a-promise. If both parties have completed the transaction (i.e., I gave you money in exchange for your apple), then there is nothing to enforce. The transaction is complete. There are no promises pending. Signing a receipt is just proof that you received the receipt, so that you can't later claim that you never saw it.

Having non-lawyers write about law is going to get really old, really fast.

Out of curiosity i read this online just this afternoon. Now i have not read the previous run but i saw glimpses here and there im aware that was not people’s cup of tea. This issue just felt like every other #1 marvel does the full volume of the marvel way! Gotta say i love the art but the lack of similar faces makes it less interesting. Im still excited for this series and Stephanie Williams might be cooking something good here its all too early to say! The villain did not interest me but lets see maybe he goes further than the classic psycho prophet serial killer. I midly enjoy a teacher Murdock but it does feel like a recycling storyline from the asm comics. I do not care for this new love interest and i hope she doesn’t sticks. Zdarsky finalized Matt’s true love and its Elektra there’s no turning back now. 3.75-3.80 as my final score.

What a great start to a new Daredevil series! I'm so excited!

I haven't read a ton from Stephanie Phillips before, but everything I have read from her so far is really funny, and I can feel some of that great humor in this too. Daredevil isn't typically thought of as a funny character, but I love when writers imbue a little fun into his story! Matt's internal dialogue here is super well written, and the joke about his crappy love life made me crack up! I think this bodes well for the future of this series.

My only issue so far is with the coloring, because why is Matt's hair not red? Make Matt ginger again.

Phillips delivers once again! This is an awesome start for a new era of Daredevil written by one of my favorite authors in modern comics. Matt as a law professor is a fun departure from the status quo that sticks close enough to feel familiar, but is unique enough to stand out. On top of that, we got some awesome action and some really fun narration that proves Phillips knows how Matt thinks. The new villain is super compelling and I can’t wait for more!

Well, straight outta the gate, I do not like this issue. Stephanie Phillips wants to put her own spin on the life of Matthew Murdock as a law professor, and that is fine, I just did not like the WAY she set it up. The artwork is pretty good. The last run on Daredevil, by Saladin Ahmed, was not great n my opinion. I was hoping for a homerun with this new arc. I will read the next issue, but remain hopeful despite the initial disappointment.

Decent start to a brand new run, plays it a bit too safe imo. I love Matt being a law teacher after what feels like forever since he had any law based stuff to do. Weirdly my biggest issue was that parts of this felt like Phillips was trying too hard to emulate how Matt sounds instead of just writing Matt.

First issue is so raw and good—
I do not know much about daredevil compared to other heroes however it’s always good to acknowledge greatness. I feel daredevil is a bit underrated and I trust this new comic issues will give him the spotlight

Excellent first issue

Great start to the bew Dardevil run sets up what's to come and introduces you to Matt Murdocks new dynamic as a law professor rather than a lawyer, which is very interesting.

This new run is interesting, but it did feel kind of lacking. I do like the introduction of a new villain and also a new side character like Detective Forte. So I’d like to see where this story goes but they gotta do more. It feels to safe.

Great start. I dig Matt as a professor to bring balance to the dual persona. The villain is shrouded in mystery and the action is dark and gritty. More of this please.
