Toy is a dark psychological erotic thriller about power, manipulation, and identity. When a dominant street figure is deliberately deceived and sexually compromised by his partner and a hired seducer, his sense of masculinity and control begins to unravel. Told through shifting perspectives, the story explores obsession, shame, addiction, and the dangerous line between desire and domination as the characters spiral into a toxic web where control changes hands and no one leaves untouched
Please check the trigger warnings before reading. It goes from zero to a hundred real quick, and does not stop until the last period in the book.
I loved everything about this book. From the cover to the ending and everything in between. It had me hooked from the first couple of pages. The intensity, the mental and emotional struggles, and the erotic scenes will have your jaw dropping on more than one occasion.
The author did an excellent job developing the MMC and the supporting characters. They were colorful and layered, and I had a love hate battle with all of them. I love books that can pull at my emotions and make me think and want more. The different scenes were well developed and thought out. I could literally imagine each place and action. The twists and turns in this book will give you whiplash. But you will love it. The author gave me exactly what I wanted and more.
The psychological aspect was well written and had depth. I did wish the book was a little longer to give more insight to the MMC and the supporting characters.
I gave the book five stars because 10 stars wasn't an option. That's how much I loved this book. I believe Author Uzziah Black will be around for a long time, and I plan on eating his books up like candy.
If you like twists and turns, intense erotic scenes and just as intense characters....Uzziah Black is the author for you. I look forward to more of his work.
Trigger Warnings — and I mean it, beloved. Read these before you proceed:
Graphic sexual content Non-consensual sexual deception Coercive control & blackmail Non-consensual recording Intimate partner violence Homophobic language Internalized shame & identity crisis Murder Poisoning / mass harm Suicide
Okay. I need everybody to sit down because I have to tell you about this book and I am not okay. I am a licensed therapist. I have a master's degree. I have spent years reading clinical literature about power, identity, shame, and human psychology. None of that — not ONE credential — prepared me for TOY by Uzzia Black. Not even a little bit.
Let me set the scene. It is a Monday morning. I have clients. I have responsibilities. I have four dogs that need feeding and a whole life that requires my functioning attention. And I am sitting here, Kindle open, staring at my screen like someone just told me something about myself I was not ready to hear.
The spice? Chile. CHILE. I am a grown queer Black woman who has lived some life and I still had to put this book face down, walk to my kitchen, pour a glass of water, look out the window, and sincerely ask the Lord what exactly I was reading. Then I went back and read it again. Twice.
Here is what I will tell you and nothing more: there are characters in this book who are not what you think they are. You will find out the way I did — against your will, mid-scene, with no emotional warning and absolutely no time to prepare. I watched my entire understanding of what I was reading flip completely upside down in real time and I just had to sit there and take it. I stared at the wall for a solid four minutes. I said things out loud to no one. I am still processing.
What makes this book genuinely remarkable — and why I'm giving it four stars — is that I have never seen anyone approach sexuality, power, identity, and psychological unraveling quite like this. Not in literary fiction. Not in erotica. Not in clinical case studies. Uzzia Black built something that doesn't fit neatly into any category I already had, and then had the nerve to make it this hot while doing it. The places this story seeps into — your assumptions, your comfort, your sense of who holds power and why — are not places most writers even know to go.
My one honest critique: I needed more runway. The chapters move into each other with barely a breath, and you are dropped into deeply uncomfortable territory before you have had enough time with these people to feel the full weight of what's being lost. Dark fiction earns its darkness by making you attached first. This book needed more pages in the middle and significantly more pages at the end. I deserved to be eased in. I was not eased in. I was thrown.
But the originality? The audacity? The psychological depth wrapped in the most unhinged spice I have read in recent memory? Undeniable.
Read TOY with your trigger warnings checked, your water nearby, and zero plans for the next two hours because you will not be functional. Keep a wall nearby for staring purposes. You will need it.
Uzzia Black — I see you. Write faster. Give us more pages next time. We deserve them. 🖤
I go in blind and literally had no idea where this was going most of the time, so this was definitely a surprise and the overall message was good. The power spiral was insane actually and I actually felt bad for Xavier lol. Even though I was thinking, "damn he aint feel the balls?" Aint no way bruh. Im not buying it lol.
Jas was demonic honestly because who even thinks to go that far because they want they man to pay attention??? Like girl omg. And she was going way too far. They all went too damn far.
Lowkey, I liked that he was like fuck it this me and everybody just kinda fell in line lmao
And how Toy acting like he aint see the camera? Was that a mistake or gaslighting? lol. He acting like he was mad about being exposed.
Just FYI there was like a repeat of a paragraph but otherwise was good.
I stumbled across this author on instagram & said oh a black independent author, let me check out his work.
This was my first book by Uzziah & I was hooked from the epilogue. Then, things took a turn rather quickly. I was like damn, this was not what I was expecting.
This book should’ve come with disclaimers so I knew what I was getting into. It was a well paced book & it made sense. There was a slight repeat in the beginning of chapter 15 from chapter 14 but then I got past that.
This truly was a gripping storyline. It was a story of betrayal, lust and wrong choices. At the height of it all when you get insecure and greedy you pay the consequences. This is what this story represents. It was well written and I look forward to reading more from this author.
I didn’t read the summary just jumped right in and I was taken back. This was such a good read tho. I definitely wanted to knock Jas head between the washer and dryer cause like whyyyyyy girl 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️. As a Blind folded unwilling participant of a persons need to control, this link up changed X life.
I read Toy: A Psychological Erotic Story in a single day, and that alone says a lot about how gripping this book is. Uzziah Black does a great job blending psychological depth with raw, intense storytelling that keeps you hooked from beginning to end.
What stood out most to me was how the story goes beyond just surface-level eroticism—it really dives into power dynamics, control, and emotional complexity. The characters feel layered, and their interactions carry a tension that makes it hard to put the book down.
The pacing is fast but still gives enough detail to keep you invested in what’s happening mentally and emotionally, not just physically. At times it can feel heavy or intense, but that’s part of what makes it memorable.
Overall, this is a bold and engaging read that’s perfect if you enjoy stories that mix psychology with passion and drama. Definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for something different and captivating.
OH WOOOWW. Lemme say this. I didn’t have NOOO idea what was going to happen in this book! Jasmine was absolutely foul for what she did & that shit backfired on her 🫣 One thing about them tables baby, they always goin turn! This was a good read & will definitely keep you interested from beginning to end.
I read this in one sitting! It would be a crime to tell the story line and you not experience the multiple story lines and point of views! It was sexy and methodical!
This book was so good. Like many by the end of it I wanted to ring Jas between the washing machine and the dryer. Please read the trigger warnings. This is a short novella but the plot is great, the smut is wonderful and the characters rope you in from the beginning. Loved it.
I really couldnt put this book down. The ending was not what I expected and it didn't end as I thought it would. Can't wait to read more from this author.
I had to wait to write this review because I didn't know what to say. I'm not even sure if I should give it 4 or 5 stars the way it's sitting with me. This was so raw...especially for it to be such a short book. Let me be clear...there is NO HEA here. If you need that, walk away now. It's also not for everyone and that's ok.
This book is psychological warfare and shows you how you can break someone in a way that you never even anticipated. It's a critique on black society, mental health, power dynamics, unintended consequences. And it's not done in philosophical way but raw, gritty, erotic, and wild.
It's hard to explain because I've never read something like this. It's an erotic psychological fiction thriller...and a really good read for me.
I felt for MMC because he was really....fractured and couldn't reconcile, the FMC - oh she f*ucked up. And those toys...they might as well have broken themselves.
Please be aware of these potential triggers (slight spoilers) * * * There's some dubcon, Gay/Bi Awakening in the worst way, general murder and mayhem, as well as suicide, Swords crossing, NO HEA
3.5 ⭐️ First read by this author and it was such a wild ride. I finished hours ago and I’m still thinking about it . Got me sitting still like wtf just happened ! Lol
Review: 5/5 Stars – A Masterclass in Psychological Suspense and Raw Urban Grit
TOY is an unflinching, high-octane journey into the darkest corners of power, ego, and desire. From the very first page in the penthouse, the atmosphere is heavy with a "bad intentions" vibe that never lets up. Uzziah Black has crafted a story that is as much a psychological chess match as it is a gritty street legend. Why it hits different:
-Complex Characters: Xavier’s descent from an untouchable street king to a man fractured by his own hidden hungers is visceral and haunting.
-The Puppet Master: Jasmine is a chilling architect of chaos, using her intimate knowledge of narcissism to dismantle a man’s identity for total ownership.
-High-Stakes Tension: The power shifts between The Heights and the North Side keep the stakes lethal, leading to a "blood census" that redefines who truly holds the iron in the city.
-Atmospheric Writing: The prose is thick with sensory detail—the smell of expensive cologne mixed with gun oil and the cold, unblinking eyes of the city lights.
The Verdict:
If you want a story that pushes boundaries and explores the "poison" of addiction and pride, this is it. It’s a "beautiful disaster" that will leave you thinking about the "Bloody Mary" of The Heights long after the final, silent sunrise.
Highly Recommended!
