The Norse gods stare down upon their people, indifferent to suffering and loss. The three Norns weave the fate of men's lives at the foot of the World Tree, uncaring of what ill patterns they shape. When the gods grant a boon, a thorn is always contained therein.
Jarl Ulfrik Ormsson is at the height of his power, dominating the Frankish countryside and earning glory and riches for all beneath his banner. Yet alliances within the kingdoms of Frankia are shifting and new threats loom. Agreeing to lend his military prowess to Norsemen in the south, Ulfrik leads twenty picked men to the blackest thread ever woven in any man's fate.
He travels south to find destiny and death. He travels to find the storm god's gift.
I really hated this book until about half way through. This book stripped Ulfrick of everything that I've come to love about an Ulfrick Ormsson book: His family and friends, his bondsmen, his glory as a great jarl and of course war.
This book took the path of Ulfrick's fate on a sharp left turn and at first I DID NOT CARE FOR IT! The only redeeming factor for me was that it was a single POV the entire way through. Every chapter featured only Ulfrick's POV.
But then something snapped in my brain about half way through. I was entranced, hypnotized and dying to know what happened next. I kept telling myself that I hated this book and that I should stop reading it but I couldn't put it down. I read this book long into each night and finished faster then I've finished any Ulfrick book before.
In short: I loved this book. It was a long courtship but I eventually fell head over heals for this book.
I have enjoyed this saga, all five books. The atmosphere of Viking life set the stage for heroic actions, intense rivalries, epic battles and love of family. The plot was unpredictable and the story moved rapidly. Characters were well developed. I hate I have to wait for the next book---but I will.
This story of Ulfrik's saga pushes the hero through several years of bondage and physical abuse. It is an interesting plot with unusual characters, but for Ulfrik , it's a lasting change to his physical ability. He is able to survive his bad luck, but just barely.
Of all of the books this one is a little too exhausting. Needed to end far before it did. I will read the rest in the series because I liked the main character.
