It’s important because it demonstrates on the one hand how very human health professionals are while at the same time standing as a reminder of the great debt we owe to those in the medical professionals who do care. In particular it properly sheds light on one Doctor who was willing to listen and who combined his education and intelligence with diligence, perseverance and a demonstrated willingness to listen.It is inspiring because it is a great example of using a bad experience to advantage. Susannah Cahalan had to twice live through a descent into a dark world we all hope to never enter. She first lived through a series of increasingly startling and baffling symptoms that seemed to indicate that she was losing her mind. When an answer finally came she chose to live through it a second time by taking a journalist’s approach and telling the story of her experience. We can be grateful she did so.

Horrible Don’t Bother

This book is a synopsis of Susannah Cahalan’s life to date. It is the length of a magazine article. The book could have been written by anyone with access to the NYT’s back issues. It is a recitation of facts. And, even the facts are wrong. Oliver Sachs is referred to as Oliver Salk. Don’t waste your time.

The movie about this prompted me to read it

This book outlines briefly the experiences she had, which were well illustrated in the movie, and detailed in her book, Brain on Fire. Having seen the movie and read this summary, I plan to read the full account.
