It is quite a concept that characters in fiction and reality can change places and Libby and Katherine are both victims of her father's discovery. I found the book confusing with part of Katherine stuck in fiction and delaying the inevitable by rewriting a section for eleven years to save her baby from death on her seventh birthday and then her ability to rewrite Libby's story when Libby is not a fictional character.

Brilliant!
Avilan is an amazing story teller with a knack for the unexpected. She never disappoints. I absolutely recommend this book.

When an author, Sam Lowenstein, decides to trade places with the protagonist he invented for his unfinished novel—literally trade places with Sam becoming Fiction and Katherine March becoming Real—everything they (and you) thought knowable about reality and fiction disintegrates into a swoosh of happy rainbow fairy dust and the obstinate smog of rain and dark clouds. But lives, fictional and real, are enhanced, disrupted, merged, torn apart and struck articulate by bewildering moments of utter clarity and profound opacity.
Victoria Avilan has brilliantly captured the essence of something everyone does every day: cross the barrier between reality and fiction, turning a life into lives and love into loves, over a steaming café au lait or a bespoke expresso. Few speak of it except in old saws like, “Snap out of it,” “Get real,” “Grow up,” “Get a life,” and similar pronouncements of judgment: instantaneous creative killers posing in drag as “good advice.”
What Avilan does is make us consider: Is it even possible to “snap out of it”? Are we not all living on a continuum of balancing radical truths and delicious fictions? The Barrier, like our lives, is unfinished when Sam makes the switch, and Katherine comes to realize that if she is to soften, erase or demolish the scarier parts of her new Reality, she must first finish the Fiction, take the story to an End, if she wishes to preserve and protect the love in her Fictional life as it transitions and tries to survive her Real life. Oh, the irony! Easier said than done.
And nothing is so clean cut as to make change easy. Sam, for instance, has a daughter who possesses a single-minded determination to find out why her father disappeared. Katherine has a wife, two kids and a third on the way who revel in her story-telling but shiver at her storyline. Katherine is also beset by the egos of both her creator and her character—presenting conundrums of epic, sometimes hilarious, proportions.
But Avilan uses a master’s hand when she tells us how Sam and Katharine pulled off the switch!
Did it really happen? Do we believe it happened? Do we understand the thin barrier between madness and genius while we watch it happen? Yes, yes, and hell yes! Can we all tell the difference? Ummm..some can!
The Barrier is a fabulous journey into the realities and fictions of life, lives that are stranger than fiction and fiction that makes you question reality. The characters are true and authentic, the setting at the beachside village of Fantasy Cove perfect, and the secondary “people” in The Barrier are a wonderfully drawn and perfect supporting cast.
If you like your fiction, and your reality, with a side of OMG, and Aww, The Barrier is the perfect read for you! Some may want to leave the lights on…

Fun, but
Maybe it is just me. The overall story was a lot of fun. I just got lost in some of the twists and turns. Perhaps that was the point but the fuzzy parts were uncomfortable leaving me unsure of the setting.
