A Fantastic Biblical Fiction

In the Fire by Ariel Yount is a powerful and inspiring Christian historical fiction novel that brings the familiar biblical story of Daniel and his friends to life in a fresh and engaging way. Set during the Babylonian exile, the story follows Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah as they are taken from Jerusalem and forced to serve in King Nebuchadnezzar’s court.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is its character development. Although many readers already know the biblical outcome, Ariel Yount makes these young men feel real and relatable. Their fears, doubts, friendships, and unwavering faith create an emotional connection that draws readers into their journey. I especially appreciated the strong bond between the four friends and the way they encouraged one another through difficult circumstances.

Another highlight is the addition of Anaya, a Hebrew servant girl whose personal struggles and faith journey add depth to the story. Her character brings a unique perspective and helps readers see the challenges of exile through different eyes.

Yount does an excellent job blending historical details, biblical truths, and compelling storytelling. The novel helps readers visualize events from the Book of Daniel while remaining faithful to the themes of courage, obedience, and trust in God. The dialogue is heartfelt, and several passages offer meaningful reminders about faith during times of uncertainty.

What stood out most to me was the message that God remains faithful even in the midst of trials. The story of the fiery furnace and the challenges faced by Daniel and his friends serves as a powerful example of standing firm in one’s beliefs despite pressure and opposition.

Overall, In the Fire is an uplifting and thought-provoking debut novel. It is a wonderful choice for readers who enjoy Christian historical fiction, biblical retellings, and stories centered on faith, friendship, and perseverance. Ariel Yount has created an inspiring novel that encourages readers to trust God no matter what circumstances they face.

While I have read several novels in the last 2 years that were inspired by Bible stories or retellings in a completely new setting, I don’t think I have read a Christian Historical Fiction book that was so close to the biblical narrative. I was a bit worried about it since this can go really really wrong (I’m honestly harsher with Christian books since I expect at least a certain moral code and theological accuracy) and I hadn’t read anything by the author.

But my worries were completely unfounded - this book was SO good! Honestly, I read a lot of books but there are some I am just dying to share with someone, which is really difficult in my case, since most of the people I know aren’t Christians and the rather few Christians I know either don’t read books at all, in English and/or only read non-fiction books, so you see why I am training my kids to love the books I do and I can’t wait to share this one with them! ;)

Okay, you already see that I absolutely loved this book, but of course I want to give you some reasons why you will love it too and why you should definitely read it!

First I have to admit I haven’t read the Bible story of Daniel for about half a year, so there definitely could be some details that I’ve missed, but I had the impression that it was an extremely accurate retelling and it felt like these could really be the aspects and background stories that we are “missing” when reading Scripture. It brought the story to life in a wonderful way. And I think this is something really special, to take a book out of the Bible and not make it a new story, but to help us readers to understand it better, to empathize more with these people, to give meaning to sentences we might have missed and overread a dozen times already.

We can learn so much from the characters of this book when it comes to faith and trust, love, friendship and sacrifice. They were all pretty amazing and I loved the brotherly relationship between Daniel and his friends as I loved how they protected and encouraged sweet and gentle Anaya. While Daniel, Mishael, Hananiah and Azariah all have their unique character traits, what they share is a deep and strong faith while Anaya has struggled with her relationship to God due to her personal traumatic experiences. It was beautiful to see how she was drawn back to him and there were several scenes and situations that brought me to tears.

It’s a beautifully written and encouraging story full of hardships and political intrigue, a story that stays true to the Biblical story of Daniel who is such an inspiring role model when it comes to trust in God despite your circumstances - always.

This is my first book by Ariel Yount and I really can't wait to be able to experience more of her work. This magnificent 📘 is a 6🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 read for me. In The Fire is an amazing Biblical, Christian, historical fiction that takes place in 605 B.C. when Jerusalem had fallen to Babylon. We follow the journey of Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah four young men who were removed from their Judean home and thrown in to King Nebuchadnezzar court. They literally face life or death obstacles and their faith is constantly being put to the test. But these four courageous men remain steadfast in their faith and love for Our God, Lord and creator. I fell in love with these four men and also Anaya the Hebrew servant girl. My heart strings really tugged for her. There were many times i cried like a baby as I followed along their journey. I loved all the biblical scriptures in this book. I annotated so many amazing quotes and dialog. This book really helped me get a better understanding of the stories that are told in our bible and i could really visualize it. I considered this a helpful tool for my self to further my biblical studies. Here are just a few ( of the many) quotes that I annotated- “Our God has always provided for our people,” Daniel responded. “We believe that what He commands us to eat or not eat is for our benefit. We do not eat or live for our pleasure, but for His.” 💖 AMEN !! ~~
Hananiah stopped her. “We strengthen each other by praying together. You cannot make weak what God has made strong. He is not afraid of our doubts, and wants you to bring your struggles to Him. Please stay and pray with us tonight.”💖 I LOVE THIS - GOD IS SO GOOD🙏 AND HE LOVES US SO MUCH!

If you love Christian historical fiction then you need to buy this work of art. It truly was a blessing and an honor to read it. I definitely need a physical copy to have in my personal library to be able to share with my loved ones. Thank you Ariel Yount for giving me the opportunity to be on your ARC Team.

This book was absolutely phenomenal! I am not usually a crier while reading, but I teared up while reading this book. This book is beautiful. This book is powerful. You will not want to put this down. It will take you on an entire roller coaster of emotions. If you love reading biblical fiction this book is a MUST READ!!

I love how biblically accurate the author stayed! I love the different personalities of the characters, as well as Anaya, the servant. They fit very well with the biblical story. I love how we get to see a lot of the political intrigue in the Babylonian court.

I love how faith was portrayed realistically. Some people could not believe. Some people struggled or questioned. All of their struggles had a purpose within the story, and led to some of the most powerful moments in the entire book. This book amazingly depicts the goodness of God.

I can't say my favorite moment because of spoilers unfortunately! Maybe I'll come back after release and add it to my review.

If you loved Francine Rivers Mark of the Lion Trilogy or Lynn Austen's Chronicles of the Kings series, you will adore this book!

Content:
Romance: Kisses
Cussing: None
Gore: None
Violence: Yes. There are several fights and attacks and injuries.
Other content notes: A character has experienced SA and infant loss in the past. (Non descriptive) Two instances of attempted SA (does not get far). A character has PTSD. All of these topics were portrayed well, there was no nudity whatsoever in this book. I was not bothered by them.

WOW! I am reminded all through the pages of this book of God's power, His greatness and the awesome love He has for us. Ariel Yount told the story of the Hebrew boys that stood firm in their belief and trust in God from the very beginning despite the pressure of their environment. I love the way the author created a vivid picture, the insightful look into their daily lives. And Anya.... she was indeed a blessing. I am short of words to describe the emotions I went through reading this book. This fiction work of the biblical story is an amazing read..one to be read over and over as one goes back to the Bible to study more about God.
The brotherly bond between Daniel, Azariah, Hananaiah and Mishael is deep and mind-blowing, the fact that in all they did they knew without being told to pray for each other and about every step. They strengthened each other- one lesson needed today as believers. Also, the way they encouraged Anaya, ultimately leading her back to God without condemnation of her doubts.
The faith and courage in every page of this book is a powerful reminder to us in our walk with God. The picture these Hebrew men portrayed should be reflected daily in our lives. Thank you for this reminder.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

In the Fire is a work of biblical fiction about Daniel, Mishael, Hananiah, and Azariah. The story spans some of the well-known accounts from the Bible, but gives more insight into their arrival in Babylon, their friendship, and the new relationships they form as they adjust to life in a foreign land.

Even though I grew up hearing these stories, seeing them brought to life in this way still made parts of it exciting to read. I enjoyed seeing the author’s take on different scenarios and the added details that helped bring the story to life.

Anaya was a great addition to the group. It made sense that they would form a friendship with another Hebrew, especially someone involved in preparing their food during the ten-day trial.

Content note: there is mention of past SA and the lasting effects of that trauma, including nightmares.

My only critique is that some of the language felt a little modern for the time period (words like “hug” or “yuck”). It didn’t take away from the story for me, but it was something I noticed.

The romance is a subplot, but it was a really sweet and enjoyable addition. Overall, I really enjoyed this one and would definitely recommend it, especially if you enjoy biblical fiction.

Ariel Yount's debut novel, In The Fire, unveils the splendor of biblical fiction. One of the things I love about this genre is that as you peel back layers of familiarity, the richness and depth reveal additional facets of God's love and mercy. The quote that struck me most vividly perfectly summed up the book's underlying theme—“Once secrets are known, they can never be forgotten.” The theme's elusive nature is apparent as Daniel and his friends initially hide their faith, much like how Anaya keeps her intelligence hidden. While the story of Daniel and the lion may resonate with familiarity, this book adds an imaginative lens that includes palace intrigue, secret plots, and abhorrent prejudice. Daniel and his three friends, whom we know from scripture, become more vivid as they experience the challenges of captivity in this book. The story unfolds, and as the men become heroes, the book blossoms into a unique tale, offering its own unique takeaways. The story's core themes are centered around the Gods' tenderness, wisdom, and grace toward his servants. This novel will likely appeal to those who enjoy biblical fiction, especially those who appreciate stories of faith.

If you've ever felt Bible stories were old, boring, and dusty, let me convince you otherwise!
Daniel and his friends were young--likely teenagers--when they were dragged from their home and exiled to Babylon. They were alone in a foreign land with no prospects of seeing their families again. In this book, Ariel brings out the different personalities of Daniel, Mishael, Hananiah, and Azariah. Responsible, peace-keeping Daniel; brave Mishael; studious introverted Hananiah; and comical Azariah. They had doubts. They were afraid. But despite it all, their faith stood strong. As the young men rise in favor in the king's court, evil men plot to take them out. Anaya, a servant girl, befriends them and greatly aids them navigate the intrigues of the palace. Because of the trauma she went through, she's struggled in her faith. Her journey was marked by courage and grace.
No spoiler here, but when the breeze carries the roar from the lions' den outside the city, I felt my skin prickle!
I loved the humor and camaraderie among the boys. There's even a bit of sweet romance. :)

Buy it, read it, share it! The same God Who delivered the Hebrew boys from the flames is still working today.

***ARC REVIEW***
In the Fire is a unique take on the story of Daniel, as seen through the eyes of Anaya, a Hebrew girl turned into a servant in the Babylonian palace. It was so interesting to follow Anaya's story set against that of Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah and to watch all their friendships bloom and deepen over the years and the eventual romance between Anaya and one of the boys that also comes from it.
I loved that this book was faithful to Scripture, touched on every major story in the book of Daniel, and made Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah so personal and emphasized their unshakable faith in God despite their difficult circumstances. I also liked the moments of intrigue that could have plausibly happened to Daniel and his friends and how Anaya was critical during some of these moments. This book does an excellent job showing the faith of Daniel and his friends and how they encouraged Anaya in her own faith.
This book is a must read if you love biblical fiction!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

In the Fire is a beautifully crafted Christian historical fiction that takes readers back to the ancient world of Babylon. Centered on the lives of Daniel and his three friends, the narrative delves into their journey from Judah to Babylon and the challenges they face under King Nebuchadnezzar. One of the standout elements is the character of Anaya, a slave who becomes a poignant focal point of the story. Her journey of faith and resilience, despite immense hardship, is both heart-wrenching and inspiring. The author does a remarkable job of weaving faith, history, and personal growth into a compelling narrative. It’s a touching and thought-provoking read, especially suitable for adolescent readers looking to explore themes of faith and perseverance.

What a joy to be a part of the journey of helping make this book what it is! In October, I was a beta reader for Ariel and so actually got to see the plot early! Actually, I don't think the book has changed much in the intervening months, besides a few additional lines. This is a debut novel, and I think the book's strongest feature is its storyline (which is wonderful). I'm really looking forward to seeing how her writing style improves over time, because I think she has a lot of potential, and that a good percentage of that showed up here.
My favorite character had to be Mishael, just because he was so absolutely sweet. But Ashpenaz and Nebuchadnezzar were also highlights for me, and their personalities were, in my opinion, very well crafted.
Ariel and I are fellow Sight & Sound Theatres fans, so it was exceptionally fun to pick up on all of the Easter eggs. But it would be an enjoyable read for anyone, and I hope she gains a loyal fanbase!
I have to mention the cover - because it is GORGEOUS! Honestly, I have to say it's one of my favorite covers I own. It's also quite contributed to by the feel, since I adore the matte.
Many kudos, Ariel; keep up the good work!

In the Fire, by Ariel Yount dares the reader to consider the question, "Who were the prophets of old?" We all know the Biblical account of Daniel, but we rarely stop to realize that his life, even his own personality must have been so much more than the account we have. If there is more to his personality, then there must be more to the dangers, adventures, and relationships that challenged him. Yount shows amazing insight into just who Daniel could have been without any contradiction to the Biblical account.

I dont read alot of biblical fiction books due to sometimes inaccuracy but this book came to me at a great time because I am currently reading the book of Daniel in my bachelor class and a bible study at church. I loved reading a fictional version of the stories of Daniel and getting to see a glimpse of what the Hebrew boys lives could have been like at this time. Thank you to Ariel for allowing me the opportunity to read this amazing book and writing this book.

This is a retelling of the biblical Daniel in the lions’ den story. The writing is very fluid and easy to read.
It seemed to follow the biblical account closely. I generally prefer not to read fictional stories about biblical characters because I am weary of getting a fictionalized version of that character stuck in my head. But certainly I have heard pastors imagining what certain characters of the Bible must have been like, and this story sort of follows that vein.

In the Fire is an engaging Christian novel that brings to life Hananiah, Mishael, Azariah, Daniel, and the fictional Anaya in a fresh and imaginative way. I really enjoyed the banter among the friends and the strong sense of loyalty woven throughout their relationships. This isn’t my usual genre, but I appreciated how Ariel Yount thoughtfully parallels the biblical accounts while creatively filling in the untold moments with her own storytelling flair. If you enjoy character growth, suspense, and witnessing miracles unfold, this book is a great pick.

This book was so sweet and bitter. I cried with Anaya's backstory 😭 and how she tries to overcome it daily. I love how Daniel and the others interact with each other through their hardships. And how they included Anaya inside their circle. It is inspiring to see how they remain positive, joyful, and hopeful with God's trust in them. . The theme of trusting God in hardships is so relevant in this time😢 ❤️I love how we got multiple POVs from each friend and show how much they changed. I would definitely read this over and over again!

In the Fire will have you running to your Bible and reading the book of Daniel with fresh eyes. Wow! I applaud the author, Ariel Yount, for bringing life into these historical events!
You will not read Daniel the same ever again. Well, done!
I HIGHLY, HIGHLY, recommend reading In the Fire.
Reading the vulnerability, the dread, weariness, relief, friendly banter, slow-burn romance, schemes, promotions, faith…..this story is powerful with just the right amount of tenderness. It will have you rereading in no time.

Most people have heard of Daniel and his friends, who were taken captive by Babylon. However, this will make you believe they were real! As others have mentioned, the banter between each friend made this story new and fresh. Importantly, it focuses on the conviction and dedication to their faith in ways most who know the story may not have thought of.

A must-read for anyone who enjoys Biblical Fiction.

This was an excellent read! I'm fairly picky when it comes to biblical fiction as many authors take way too much artistic license or take things out of context. That was not the case with this book! All the interactions and court intrigue was very plausible (and if you've read the book of Daniel you know there definitely was court intrigue and plotting!) I feel that reading the book of Daniel will now be richer! Also, I now remember their Hebrew names vs their Babylonian names much better!

GET READY TO FEEL ALL THE FEELS.
I have not cried from a book in a very long time, but there was such a heartfelt, spiritual moment (I won't say more) that I just had to put the book down and have a good cry. It felt healing.
This book is bible fiction. It felt a little like reading the bible in story version instead of verses, with the addition of a female main character who was pretty awesome.
I very much enjoyed reading it!

Before I begin, I want to say, thank you, Lord, for writers like Ariel Yount who take the risk of writing stories like these in your name, sharing your Word with those who are searching for it. It was a terrifying read for me. It's the first time in a long time that I've dared to request an arc different from what I usually read: a direct retelling of a biblical book. But the Lord is so great that it even made me want to read the book of Daniel after this one.

Consequently, regarding the fictional characters in the plot, it was an incredible experience getting to know them. Their fears, losses, gains, longings, and faith. Even though they weren't related by blood, they were a loyal family. In fact, that's why I was curiously pleased that there were few female characters and that they gave more prominence to a single girl: Anaya. My girl, I think her story has been one of the most moving and tragic. Furthermore, I loved every second of watching her relationship with the main group develop.

I must say, it's a story with a lot of substance, political intrigue, personal challenges, and a bit of action. The questioning of why suffering occurs is beautiful, a very human and valid question. In The Fire surprised me in a thousand ways, and I absolutely have to recommend it. Thanks for the arc!

Wow! Wow! Wow!

I don't even know what to say about In The Fire. I loved every minute of reading this amazing book! It truly was amazing!

I loved how Ariel stayed true to the bible. I loved how she was creative in the lives of Daniel (Belteshazzar), Hananiah (Shadrach), Mishael (Meshach), and Azariah (Abednego). My favorite character was Anaya. She showed true courage, and I loved how her story was portrayed.

In The Fire reminds us to trust in God and to pray, even when we are faced with challenges and find ourselves afraid of the unknown.

Amazing book! And an amazing message!

Advanced Reader Copy Review: All thoughts and opinions are my own

Ariel does a wonderful job at staying true to the Bible but also uses some creative licensing with the lives of our MC’s, Daniel (Belteshazzar), Hananiah (Shadrach), Mishael (Meshach), and Azariah (Abednego).
Anaya was my favorite character. She overcame fear and her past and showed true courage in helping the MC’s. She also shows the most and greatest growth.
In The Fire is a reminder that we are called to trust in God during all times in our lives.
I was lucky enough to be entrusted by Ariel to beta read this a few months ago and I loved it the first time and found it just as enjoyable a second time ARC reading it. Ariel is an amazing debut author with an amazing imagination and a wonderful way at storytelling.
