Michael Vincent believes he doesn’t. But can he ignore the discovery of his mate or the menace threatening his former pack as a chance for atonement?
Desperate to escape the memories of the horrific acts committed against his former pack, Michael Vincent has spent the last year running as a lone, tormented wolf. Fearful of his weakening humanity, he returns to human form, but chooses to live in solitude, deep in the Rochfort Mountains. When he discovers his mate, a fragile hope slowly begins to ease the burden of the guilt he bears, but the evil that splintered his former life casts its shadow anew, forcing Michael to reunite with his pack mates as they brace to confront a terror thought long buried.
Released is book 2 of the suspenseful Turning Moon series, a contemporary world where wolves, vampires, and witches defy prejudices, join forces, and fall in love. The heroines are feisty, the heroes gutsy, and the villains heinous.

RELEASED by Julie Embleton, book 2 in the Turning Moon series.
Following BOUND, book 1, the story continues with Michael Vincent, a minor character at the start, who has spent the last year on the run, convinced he deserves to be alone and tormented by his guilt. His unwitting but devastating actions in book 1 continue to haunt him as he tries to build a new life deep in the Rochfort Mountains, away from his pack. Fate has different plans when he meets his mate, giving Michael a small glimmer of hope for redemption. But as the nightmare and evil of his former life threatens to destroy all hope, can he overcome his guilt, make peace with his pack and rid the evil for good this time?
As with the first in the series, Released is not just wolf fiction, a trope that I don't usually enjoy. Friendship, love and loyalty feature strongly here, all woven into a suspense thriller that feels far more real than an urban fantasy. The author has a natural gift of pulling you into the story, convincing you that wolves live amongst us in our everyday lives.
I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Elyse Osterhaug, who I am delighted to say has recorded the whole series. Elyse has a beautiful, easy tone that keeps you listening, bringing compelling depth to her storytelling... wonderful.
The Turning Moon series is a must-read and listen for all lovers of urban fantasy, thrilling suspense, and of course, a fabulous wolf romance. If you are new to audiobooks, these are great places to start. Now on to book 3!
Michael Vincent believes he doesn’t. But can he ignore the discovery of his mate or the menace threatening his former pack as a chance for atonement?
My thoughts: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. In Bound, Julie Embleton’s first book in the series, Michael Vincent plays a smaller part but he steps centre stage in Released. Tortured by his role in the horrific events at Blackwater Ridge, Michael hides away in a cabin in the woods, away from his pack and everyone else. Until he meets Genna.
I love Embleton’s writing. She weaves a tantalising romance in amongst werewolves, demons, and magicians. I think the strong characters and equally strong storyline make this an amazing book. There are a couple of gory scenes with the demon but they are brief. The over-riding story of a tightly wound werewolf culture with rules and boundaries add truth and believability to the story.
I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
This is a 5 star read. If you think this isn’t your genre, I’d suggest you try this series anyway. It’s wasn’t my genre either, until I started reading these fabulous books.
This is book two in the Turning Moon series and yes, it’s werewolves. Now, I’m usually not keen on this whole genre, but I’d read and enjoyed another fantasy series by the same author, so I thought I’d give book one, Bound, a go. Much to my surprise I consumed it in a few days and couldn’t wait to read Released to find out what happened next.
Wonderfully written, the author has clearly spent a lot of time on this wolf world she has created. There are rules and politics within the packs, there are taboos and traditions which add a layer of richness to the story and make it credible. Her characters are three-dimensional, and even though they have the ability to change into wolves, they are still relatable and very real.
I like the way the focus of Released is on a secondary character from the first book Bound, and that the main characters from the first book took a step back to become secondary in Released. This sharing by the characters of the limelight weaves into a fabulous tapestry of connections and relationships that paints a vivid picture of the landscape they inhabit.
There is a love story, but it’s not the sole intent of the plot – indeed, at times it is almost pushed to one side as the characters are dragged into a frightening and threatening situation. There is some nice interaction between the characters and the dialogue is strong and realistic.
Overall, this was an intriguing and engrossing read with a fast-paced plot that draws the reader in and carries them along with the action. Very enjoyable and well-deserving of five stars.
Turning Moon now turns its attention to Michael. This is Michael’s story.
This book is about reflections, looking back, regrets, self isolation and survival to overcome the past. I was slowly pulled into Michael’s head so I could see, feel and sense his struggle to just exist with his wolf tucked away deep inside. He didn’t trust himself to control his raging wolf...not after what happened to his pack. I saw Michael standing on a precipice with his past pushing with a self destructive force to end it all and his wolf willing him to live. I saw one man’s journey back from almost destruction by isolating himself and taking only occasional peeks into the outside world. Then bang it happened!Genna, happened. The wolf inside is now fighting to come out. Julie Embleton certainly knows how to spin a love story that not only captures your heart; but your imagination as well.
Michael was a secondary character in Bound. He has evolved into one hunk of a main character in Released. He has so many layers covering all those muscles that I know he has. Released is a very intricate study of characters and behavior, human and otherwise. We are introduced to Graham and Tori who have secrets of their own...deadly ones. There’s Genna who is struggling with guilt about her father and confusion about her feelings for Michael. Ahhh, her mother, Joan who I suspect has a few secrets of her own. The author has expertly developed all of these characters seemingly effortlessly.
My novice werewolf reading has turned out to be a very enjoyable. One more to go...Haunted is next. Werewolves, vampires and witches...OH, MY!

Oh, Michael Vincent, you can come wolf right by my side any time you want... Julie Embleton's second instalment in the Tunring Moon series picks up where we left book one, but this time we follow Michael on his journey of guilt and despair. Troubled and haunted by the events on book one and what he was forced to do, Michael hides from his former pack - torn asunder as they are - and lives his life as a wolf, while slowly trying to come to terms with his past and the recognition he was not as much to blame for what took place as he believes himself to be. A light sparks at the end of the dark tunnel he chose for himself, and as he realises he's been mated, his whole life and mindset are forced to change. Seeing the mating from the human side was rather fun, I found myself laughing at some places, smirking at certain reactions from Genna. Their relationship becomes endearing as it evolves, and I found myself rooting for them from the first moment. But as soon as I finished it, I was already salivating for book three, left as I was with the promise of a vampire and some more witch lore in which I'm eager to dive in!
After reading book 1 of the Turning Moon series, I immediately started in on book 2.
Book 2 focuses on a different character - Michael - in the aftermath of book 1. Haunted by his actions he runs away from his pack to do penance for what he perceives to be his crimes.
Fairly early on in the story Michael meets his mate, and so I thought it was going to turn into a fairly standard will-they-won't-they type of romance. I was delighted to learn that I was wrong! Julie continues with her unique take on a werewolf romance novel.
If anything, book 2 was better than book 1 and so now I am off to read book 3. I don't know what I'm going to do when I've read book 3! Book 4 isn't out yet!!
Beautifully written, engaging, intriguing … Having enjoyed Bound, the first in the series, I was intrigued to discover where the journey would take us. In Released, we follow the fortunes of Michael, one of the more peripheral characters from Bound. Michael is tormented by the horrific acts committed during his bewitchment, and tries to rebuild his life away from his old pack and in isolation from society. That is until he meets Genna. As strong forces of attraction pull Michael and Genna together, demons from the past reappear and need to be confronted. Michael must re-engage with old friends to face the challenge. The story is beautifully written, engaging and intriguing … and it’s not over yet.
Another fantastic read by the talented Julie Embelton. Book two follows Michael as he leaves the pack to recover from being possessed by the evil threat from book one. After a few month of seclusion his bank account begins to dwindle, leaving him no choice but to go into the small podunk town he settled himself in, to find work. To his surprise, he finds his mate - who happens to be human! There is more magic, adventure and mystery in this book. I loved the depth we gain by branching out to new characters. This book left me wanting more! Naturally, I’m jumping into book three right away!
The transition from book one, BOUND, to book two, RELEASED, was beautifully done. Ms. Embleton had already built us a complex and sophisticated world of werewolves to become engaged in and book two carries us further into this world, making it even more alive and believable.
Michael Vincent begins this new adventure with his dark, tormented and yet dreamy persona. He was a lesser character in the first book and now takes front stage. Having been tormented by the terrible villain Northfell who made him do things he is devastated by, he leaves the pack to live alone in a cabin in the woods. He is hard on himself and is dealing with what he has done and endured. There is a wonderful love story that sparks to life early on. Werewolves have a special ability to know immediately that they have met their life long mate. This recognition and drive is so powerful that it is impossible to ignore. Michael needs to stock up on supplies and meets Genna, a young human woman. Against everything that he wants at that moment in time, he knows he has found his mate. The love story that develops between them is wonderful. It weaves in and out of this tale and adds richness without overwhelming the thrill of the read.
The major story that surrounds Michael and Genna’s, is a thrilling and frightening one. There are terrible events that must be faced. The return of pure evil and a threat to the lives of his pack and beyond, brings Michael back into the world where he joins once again with the characters that we loved in Bound. They must face the terrible, figure out and fight for their lives and hopefully end, once and for all, this world threatening evil. There is a very clever and satisfying ending, one with a surprise that will transition us with enthusiasm into Book Three: HAUNTED.
Oh, how I loved this book! Another Exciting Page-Turner from Julie Embleton!
The Turning Moon series by author Julie Embleton won my book-loving heart with the first installment, “Bound.” When I finished it, I dove right into the second book in the series, “Released.”
Oh, how I loved this book! Embleton takes us back into the Blackwater Ridge pack’s original story – back to paths begun from its ending and traveled by the wolves affected by the chaos, violence, and horror inflicted on them in book one. This time we follow protagonist (wolf) Michael Vincent as he tries to escape wretched memories and grieves alone for what he’s done (under duress). Quickly I became enamored of Michael – his honor, his passion and focus, and even his trend toward a sort of benevolent dominance. Early on, a fan of this series will suspect he has all the makings of an Alpha wolf inside him. But as a man (wolf) without a pack, how can he be?
Carving out a compelling plotline with a ‘secondary’ character introduced in a series debut is challenging. The author not only has to choose the ‘right’ character, she has to sell the new protagonist as THE star. Embleton makes this look easy – she’s a master of her craft. Not once did I compare the main characters in “Released” to those in book one or wished for a continuation of the original branch in the overall storyline. I was fully committed to Michael’s story by the middle of page three. I was already invested in wanting a good outcome for him before chapter one was over. You care for him, but you don’t pity him.
Yes, Embleton writes fantasy. Yes, this series contains the unbelievable – men and women shapeshifting into werewolves; vampires; demons; magic-wielding shamans – but she’s also created such believable characters that you find yourself thinking, this might just be true. Certainly, the feelings of despair, fear, hopelessness, friendship, thankfulness, and love are real, and as the characters experience the rough range of these emotions, we are drawn in and those same feelings erupt in our own chests.
I literally cried out “no!” at one point when Genna Clancy (I’ll get to her in a minute) makes a life-altering decision in one of the final chapters. As a reader, I was actually distraught over her choice and praying to the book gods that she would be stopped before it became too late. Genna’s distress leading up to this choice is so palpable, you genuinely *feel* her frantic run for help. Read the book to find out if she went through with her unsettling decision!
Which brings me to what I absolutely LOVE about Embleton’s skill as a writer: She can run a character – and your heart – through hell and yet you still have a glimmer of hope that she does not stamp out along the way. Too often an emotional tale will drag you so deeply through despair that you’re more exhausted than satisfied by the end of the book. Not so with “Released.” The author knows how to satisfy readers and yet keep them hungry for more. Thankfully there are more books in the series following this one.
But back to new character Genna – a HUMAN! Yes, a human gets drawn into the whole chaos surrounding Michael and the former members of the disbanded Blackwater Ridge pack. Genna is likeable and relatable. She and Michael get off to a rocky start, but by no means is this an enemy-to-lovers story. It’s more like life. First impressions aren’t always the best. Half fascinated by what she’s learned about Michael and half terrified by what this means for her moving forward, the reader can easily put their feet into Genna’s shoes and see the story from outside the world of the wolves. This is a fabulous way to ‘participate’ in the storyline, if you will. (Since we readers are likely not werewolves and would bring a human perspective!)
Author Embleton also scares the hell out of us with a familiar demon. Good grief, he is downright terrifying! I’ve seen the author interact in social media – she’s very nice. It’s amazing that she can produce such a horrid character. Yannek is the stuff of nightmares. I actually felt sorry for one of the ‘bad guys’ when Yannek got his hands on him.
There are some big twists in “Released” which will set up the third book in the series (“Haunted”) quite nicely. And that ending… Wow! You won’t want to stop – I jumped right into book three when I finished “Released.” I have loved every installment in the series so far… but a part of me is still drawn to wolf Michael Vincent and his story in book two.
In the author’s description of “Released,” she asks: Does a killer deserve redemption? This is something you will need to answer for yourself. For me, it was a yes. Michael more than atoned for what he’d done (again, was compelled to do), and in the process, picked up another reader / fan.
Lastly, I’d be remiss if I didn’t share how much I love witnessing Embleton’s love affair with words. Here’s an early one that I favorited: “Splashes of yellow now brightened the scene with the arrival of daffodils growing in large planters on the pavement edges, but he paid their jolly head-bobbing little attention as he pulled into his first stop.”
And admittedly this line brought on a snicker: “Because he has the personality of a plateful of mortal sin.”
I love it.
Bravo to Julie Embleton’s “Released”! I'd give it more than five stars if I could. This book will sit on my shelf of favorites. Where has this series been all my life?
Following the horrific events at Blackwater Ridge, Michael Vincent abandons his wolf pack. Riven with guilt and traumatised by his own actions, he hides away in a tiny cabin, until a chance meeting with a tetchy young woman breaks down his barriers. But the past is never far away.
I own to being a huge fan of Embleton's writing. The plot bounds along at a fair pace, yet breathing space is given to build intriguing characters and poignant relationships. The central romance is appealing, without hijacking the story and it's easy to root for the wounded wolf and his confused mate.
I loved this so much that I'm moving straight into the final book, Haunted.
I was happy to find out this series was available in audio format. My lack of time to read physical books, makes me take way too long to get through even fabulous stories. I actually didn't want to stop cleaning my house so I could listen to this whole book. As it was, I did complete it in 3 days with interruptions, and that is quicker than I listen to most audiobooks.
The narrator did a brilliant job of making each character have distinct voices. I like when I can picture male versus female characters as I listen even though it is just one person doing the narration.
The story is engaging. It has all the elements that I love in a book: characters to cheer for, a love story, action, and redemption. This book focuses on Michael Vincent who was controlled by the evil werewolf in the first book, Bound. He's learning to live with the actions he committed while he was under a spell by keeping separate from his former pack.
The best part about this series is even if you aren't into werewolves, witches, vampires, or demons, the characters of the story make you want to read on. In that way, I compare these books to the Twilight series, because the books took away my fear of monsters. Not all werewolves and vampires want to kill humans just for sport or food. Even though I knew it was fiction or fantasy, I was a chicken and avoided the genre. With werewolves like Michael Vincent, I want to join his pack.
How would you handle finding out werewolves were real, then be further stunned to know you were one’s mate? Embleton makes that part sound pretty tempting! Released, the second book of the Turning Moon trilogy, was just as spellbinding as the first. The characters kept the pages turning with their struggle to conquer inner demons as a devilish foe loomed. A must read for romance and urban fantasy lovers.
Having been gifted the first book in the series, I rapidly moved onto the second - and the third! (And then onto Julie Embleton's next series!)
'Released' sees a secondary character from the first novel take prominence in this linked story. Although the series is focused around a pack of werewolves, each book is much more of a story about people and the complexities of relationships and expectations. In this book, the unfolding relationship between Genna and Michael is deftly handled, alongside the battle of Michael's sense of guilt and a dark mystery surrounding Book 1's villian... Thoroughly enjoyable and engaging, and definitely recommended!
Released by Julie Embleton If you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise…and the surprises keep coming, but they aren’t teddy bears. Werewolves demons, magicians and vampires are seamlessly woven into this fantasy romance laced with black magic. If you like a tortured hero beset by dark forces you’ll love Released - second in the Turning Moon Series
Having cut my teeth on the world of werewolves and the supernatural by reading book 1 in the Turning Moon series, I was very happy to leap back into it with book 2, Released. It links in nicely with the adventures of Nyah and her pack, but concentrates on one of the sub-characters from that book, Michael, and his battle with guilt having, under the influence of evil Alpha male, Simon Northfell, been forced into killing other pack members. ‘Released’ deals with the loneliness and isolation he feels without the pack, his unexpected resurrection when he meets his (human) mate, and the pressure both he and his mate feel having to deal with their innate differences, which are placed under further stress when evil returns.
I enjoyed the way the book switched perspectives, looking at the struggles of dealing with the unusual relationship of the two main protagonists. It helped to get into the head of the characters, aided by the occasional change of point of view to the other people around them. The action scenes were tense and very exciting. Part of me wanted more, but I know I can satisfy the ‘werewolf’ in me by simply reading the rest of what is an excellent series! I will do that for sure.
The second in a paranormal fantasy shifter series, 'Released' follows a side character who intrigued me in the first book in the series, 'Bound'. After the dramatic events of 'Bound', Werewolf Michael is tormented, guilty and isolated. But when he meets the human, Genna, things begin to change. I loved the chemistry between Michael and Genna. The scene where she witnesses him transform from wolf to human was magnificently written, and I really felt for Genna’s confusion, awe and refusal to believe, especially when she learns she’s his ‘fated mate’. But things don’t go smoothly for this lovely couple, especially when an old adversary re-emerges with revenge in his soul. As in the first book, I loved the werewolf culture. They’re supportive of one another, have an appreciation of nature and mostly seem to be all round nice people. The story rolls along at a terrific pace and there are twists and turns aplenty, together with some intriguing hints about the next book, including the revelation that one character has an agenda no-one else suspects. The next book in the series, Haunted, is already on my TBR pile, and I’m looking forward to finding out what happens next.
The second installment of the Turning Moon series is a more introspective novel as we focus on Michael, the beta who is struggling to accept that all the horrors that happened in the first book, weren't his fault.
As such it is a much slower beginning as we follow Michael as he fights his own insecurities and tries to reengage with the world and people around him. His struggles are heart breaking, though his progression just as heart warming.
Embleton's prose is a joy to read and her understanding of the emotional rollercoaster she puts her characters through beautifully captured. Her characters are rich and well developed and are just as wonderful to meet as we follow them through the many ups and down that challenge them.
I listened to the audiobook, and Elyse Osterhaug did a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life, and I thoroughly enjoyed her narration.
So, umm.... I like this series enough to keep listening to the next books. Jenna in this book, though. Come on, woman, not everything that happens in the world is your fault. Don't be so dramatic.
What is annoying me a bit is that this was clearly written by a British author, given the word usage in the book. However, the narrator is American. I wouldn't have gotten distracted if the words were spoken in a British accent..lol
On to the 3rd book! At least the vampire is British!
I love how easy these books are to read. They just flow so gracefully. I am in love with the love stories enter twined among the chaos. It makes me want to be part of a wolf pack. I love that I can envision what the author is trying to portray. I'm not much of a reader, so I'm surprised that I had finished these so quickly and cannot wait till I read the next book in the series.
2nd book in series, just gets better. I love how the characters have this push - pull chemistry, will they, won't they. Struggles they're personally enduring and have to overcome to find that light at the end of the tunnel.

I really enjoyed book 2 in this series. It's got me hooked and ready for the next one.
Our MC in this book really goes through the ringer having to overcome his survivors guilt and hold on to his humanity. It's definitely harder than it should be especially without his pack around to help him.
