Clan Jäger finds adventure on the high seas, where the stakes are as high as the tides. Qi is a precious resource and power must be used sparingly, or else one courts disaster. The Blight has found its way to what might otherwise be a paradise, though the pirates that infest the archipelago might bring their own problems to the equation. As Leon and crew navigate the treacherous waters of the sea and island politics, one thing remains the Hunt must continue. With a warfront on one side and otherworldly horror on the other, things can only come to a head- and it will be those who have given their hearts to the knight who will have to win the day.
Sloppiness of this series escalates once again, but it’s still mindlessly fun in its own way. 2 star review.
Will of the Immortals has proven itself to be sloppy series that does a lot of the worst things in this genre with world building and a magic system that doesn’t make sense and isn’t logically consistent, with its contractions and plot contrivances… its harem… but it’s still fun, so here I am.
Very little about this latest book in the series makes sense. The political situation in the archipelago, the economic situation (what are the pirates even pirating?), the factions, the Qi resources or lack of them, the fact every enemy save one is at least King realm now (even pirate deckhands), the system oaths breaking all rules for this world, the rebirth system, the contrivances around every corner, the fights that aren’t ever a challenge, the MC from Middle Ages Germany who designs a rail gun from scratch but can’t make a propeller or armor for his ship. The list goes on and I could explain each in detail but I’ll spare you and myself.
This series has always engaged with the tropes of this genre in a superficial and simplistic manner. And I think it mostly worked before this book. They’re tropes because that’s what readers want. The problem with this book, is that we’ve lost all sense of logical consistency with this story. It has become A TOTAL EFFIN MESS!
Despite all that, I still enjoy the characters for the most part, even if they are intensely superficial themselves, and I like the plot… to a degree. And I’ll probably read the next book but that might be it for me if it’s as bad as this one. I am removing this series from my recommendations as it just doesn’t hold up. I’ve read so many series where I liked and rated highly early novels but more often than not, they fall off. Sorry for the bad review dear author, please take more care with logical consistency with your Immortal’s Mask series.
This whole thing is just a bloated side quest. The power scaling has gotten ridiculous which makes all the combat heavily one sided which is just boring. What started as an amazing series has devolved into repetitive, boring bloat.
The characters remain likable, their interactions remain fun, and the plot flows well. Unfortunately, the action scenes are overwrought, the power levels are inconsistent, and too many conversations are single words between people in the know without explanation for the protagonists and audience. I plan to read the next volume.
I highly recommend this book. It is a continuation of a story, so you probably should start with book one. Leon and company pick up some new Clan-mates, encounter a mysterious benefactor, a dragon, and an o.p. bad guy. I only found one tiny little typo. Amazingr editing. The characters are developing while keeping their personalities and values. Relationships are budding, powers are growing, skills are developing, and cultivation is advancing. I greatly appreciate the appendices in the back of the book. I thought I knew a lot about armor. Ha! I didn't know Jack. Mr. Krauss knows about armor. And he teaches us about it in a very non-invasive way as he entertains us.
I highly recommend this book to pretty much everyone. It's not gory or overly romantic. It is exciting, adventurous, and fun.
10 dragons is my overall rating. Excellent world building, wonderful character development, and very good pacing throughout the book and the series. Also, the editing is absolutely top notch.

PS: I'm very much looking forward to the next book in Sataou's story. I definitely recommend that series, too. It gives a lot of background for this one, and fills in some gaps.
This book isn’t bad, feels more like a transition point for the series, as stuff happens and hints to the grander plot are dropped, but other than that it kind of feels like filler. Fight after fight, with the only downtime coming in short paragraphs that explain making something or meditation before another fight finds them. There is never an explanation for how the pirate ships constantly find the main characters on the open ocean, but they always do, leading to more fights.
Combat feels a little repetitive after so many, and the sea battles more so than normal as the cannon balls can only be described so many ways.
Hoping the next one has a little more crafting/runes/soulsmithing as it’s hinted towards, and maybe progress on the relationships outside of a few repeated conversations about wanting to feel useful or insinuating about the eventual proposal.
This book has lots of fun fights and cool places to see. The world building is interesting as usual and hints toward future adventures. The characters and their relationships feel very static in this book. It's quite jarring compared to the evolving dynamics of the series up to this point. Even new characters have very little story to them and are mostly ignore.
Ultimately, it's still full of fun, but it feels noticeably off. I hope that the next book digs deaper into the characters or pushes them into more unfamiliar environments that force them to grow together.
Another fantastic addition of well crafted story telling by our beloved Jay Krauss. Leon and crew get to experience life on the sea, the pirates that come with it, and some more politics. Big beautifully written fights, losses, and joy at new discoveries. Stick with this series, there is so much more to enjoy!!!
Gob smacking writing as usual jay, you have my thanks!!!
Meditated on the sword dao in the very beginning of the book and that's it. Know the cultivations stuff at all really for the rest of it. I hope in the next book he finally makes armor for Soren. The next book sounds like it's going to be interesting. I feel bad for Max
It is a good book. Lots of adventure and other things going on. Leon keeps growing and learning. He's got a great support group. I'm horrible at reviews but the book is good!
Leon and his family face unbelievable challenges, suffering hardships and of course ends with an amazing cliffhanger. Can’t wait to hear how it turns out!
