When Life Gives You Werewolves

Rate this book
Cody’s life has always been a struggle. His degree hasn’t gotten him anywhere except deeper into debt, and his minimum wage job can’t keep up with the expenses. After bombing yet another interview, he encounters a homeless werewolf named Roscoe who turns an already challenging situation into absolute chaos.

Lycanthropy doesn't just affect older teenagers, and after a night of regret, Cody discovers he’s turning into a dirty beast himself. Now facing eviction, the new half-turn has to accept a dubious contract with a werewolf, and Roscoe will do just about anything to keep his meal ticket from slipping away.

To make matters worse, a mix-up at the government agency for werewolf housing forces another bonded pair into Cody’s dwindling personal space. Though his new roommates do everything they can to test his patience, Cody discovers that all of the preconceived judgements he made as a human weren’t entirely true. Every hilarious antic and rage-filled outburst reveals harsh truths about each of their pasts.

When a mistake sends one of his packmates spiraling, Cody has no choice but to turn to a…feral solution. That decision sends them all on a spiritual journey that could either put them on the right path or permanently erase everything they are.

Content This book is for adults, and as such there are adult themes including traumatic flashbacks later on. These include drug use, suicide, strong sexual situations, violence, and domination. The book may be romantic comedy, but does have traumatic scenes. If you are a sensitive soul, you'd best look for another book.

This is a phenomenal story that, honestly, felt a little tailor-made to my tastes. The narrative is incredibly compelling, the pacing is seamless, and the characters are flesh-out and complex. I truly recommend this book to anyone who is the slightest bit intrigued by its blurb. It's probably my favorite book I've read in the last 5 years, at least.

Having. Said. That.

I do have some thoughts and critiques. None of which affect how I feel about the work overall, and fall into the category of spoilers:

The world-building here is an interesting new take on werewolves: Werewolves exist in modern society, but they are considered less than by humans. They inhabit the outskirts of society, living on the dregs that humans leave behind, often homeless, drunk, or stoned. In late puberty, some humans begin the slow process of turning into werewolves, spending possibly many years as “half-turned”, straddling between humanity and werewolves in an delicate state, prone to violent emotional outbursts, and hypersexual to the extreme. They are usually paired with werewolves to keep them in check. Since half-turns get the equivalent of a disability stipend and housing from the government, many werewolves see half-turns as an easy meal ticket. Thus begins the story…

One of the things that I focus on when I read is the characters – Who are they? What is their history? What motivates them? In this book Dusk does a great job of weaving a tapestry of multiple characters intersecting at different times in their lives caring for each other, being terrible to each other, and sometimes hitting rock bottom. We have Art, whose orderly and neat life is upended as he becomes a half-turn in his early 20s. Art pairs with Simon, a conniving, lazy, drunk werewolf who is a hot mess, but somehow lovable anyway. Add in Adam, a spoiled brat of a half-turn and Austin, his abusive, antisocial werewolf, and the stage is set for quite a story. I wouldn’t have said it at the beginning, but I adored all of these characters by the end of the book.

Overall, the pacing can be a bit odd, particularly midway through where the story takes an abrupt left turn, but even that was explained to my satisfaction later. I teared up several times in the final chapters, which is always a sign of a great book for me. This was a marvelous find, and I highly recommend it!

I read Aeron's other books, and loved them. So it wasn't surprising that I loved this one as well. The story was well written and thought out. The emotions were all over the place for me. Towards the latter part of the book there were times I was literally laughing with tears in my eyes due to the swings in feelings the book brought out. I would gladly recommend this book. I'm looking forward to seeing his books progress.

When Life Gives You Werewolves by Aeron Dusk is one of those books you go in blind and are left wanting to read and know more about the characters, lore, and where they end up after the end of the book.

This book explores: What if Werewolves inhabited the 21st century and were part of modern life, how would society change as we know it? This book explores that but also themes of Love, Finding your family/pack, how to deal with your past, and accepting yourself.

*Trigger Warning* this book contains scenes of Drug use/addiction, Death, Slavery, Mental Domination, Abandonment, Violence, Violent M/M Sexuality, Starvation, Religious Fanaticism, Police Brutality(Against Werewolves), Self Harm, PTSD, Depression, and Harmful Experiments.
However: All of these add to the plot and not just added in for shock value.

I truly love Aerons’s world building, each location and scene feels lifelike in how he describes it. Blending fiction and realism for werewolves in modern society. Each character doesn’t feel one dimensional and every detail is given thought and adds depth to the character. They are given traits and backstories that aren’t one offs to make the character more relatable for the everyday reader. Each facet is explored and has a reason for being there, that makes you wish you could know these characters in real life. Their dilemmas or issues aren't waved away in one page like a magic wand, we read through their struggle and growth and I love being able to see the narrative growth of my favorite characters. In addition, there is a theme of werewolves and sex, but it is used more as a plot device and not an excuse to have a sex scene every other page.

I especially like how each conversation flows and reads like actual dialogue, if you get the chance the audiobook highlights the day to day conversations and makes the story come alive. You will find yourself sucked into the narrative and story you don’t wanna put it down till you are suddenly at the end of the book.

When Life Gives you Werewolves is a book for those wanting Werewolves in everyday life, of having second chances, and finding a family to accept and help you through the tough times.

Great Book Aeron and hope to read more from you!

This book was wild. I actually read this when it was a web novel. So when the author announced he's converting it to a full on physical book I was stoked. And giving it a second read years later still gave me the warm and fuzzy feelings I got the first time. While I've enjoyed the authors other books this one's my favourite.

If you look at the cover of the book and think 'aww thats cute/hot' and you're up for a raunchy urban fantasy comedy/drama then read this. Its about two werewolf couples living together in government housing. Being funny unhinged weirdos, working through unresolved trauma and becoming a family.

The book is a bit unusual in that it's actually focuses on two couples. MC Cody and Roscoe. Austin and Adam. With the vast majority of the book being Cody's POV. Cody's POV helps us learn about the worldbuilding. And while his relationship with Roscoe is important. Alot of the plot is driven by Austin and Adam. Because of this, it actually feels like both couples have a solid solid story and character arc that's done by the end of the book. Unlike most romance books where each couple would be dealt with seperately in their own books. Really helps drive the fact that they're a found family at the end of it and makes the book feel truely complete.

Book is hilarious.
The werewolves worldbuilding goes really deep. They're a race of universally musclebound, disgusting and smelly beasts. They don't like bathing or wearing pants. They're always high key horny and ready to have wild, rough sex with any remotely attractive person at the drop of a hat. All of which is the general base of the books comedy.

"You want to give me the tooth that Daryl violently f'd loose? I'll pass."

"I should make it into a necklace. It'll be a good conversation starter."

The books is also super sad sometimes.
There's a lot of hurt comfort in this book. I don't cry often with books but I sad cried three times. Werewolves in this book are 2nd class citizens. Most of the wolves in the city are homeless bums who are either desperate to find their place in life. All the main characters have super sad time back stories that makes you wanna hug the pain away.

I will note that initially all the characters actually start out a bit (or even extremely) unlikeable. All the characters are real fixer uppers. MC Cody is generally the voice of reason, but sometimes he's extremely stubborn and judgemental about the most random inane things. Roscoe is charming. good hearted husband material. But he's can also be manipulative, lazy bum that really goes too far sometimes. Austin is just a massive dickhead for a 3rd of the book and Adam is frustratingly whiny and annoying for most of it. By the end of the book you'll love all of them, despite their flaws. But if it wasn't for the comedic tone of the book some of the characters were a bit hard to swallow sometimes.

The side characters are fun and interesting. Daryl is my favourite, just the coolest best/fuck boy ever. There's also the intense mayor Mogwai, who's dominating nature will whip any werewolf to shape. And his bewitchingly beautiful and cheeky wife Wilka, who Mogwai will endure any shame and torment for.

Funnily enough, despite how much talk there is of sex and dicks and cum. Theres only two or three explicit sex scenes (I'm actually glad that some of the old ones got removed). At a bit over 550 pages, I understand not writing a scene every time Cody and Roscoe bang. Because otherwise this book would double in length. Personally felt there could have been one or so more, but I respect it either way.

Because ultimately the story really is about love and family. Discovering the kind of person you are meant to be and feeling comfortable in your skin. Finding your place in a world that can be really shit and terrible sometimes. Getting peace and healing with the people that love you and love you back. Even when they're being annoying wierdos and make you want to tear your hair out. Because life will randomly give you sour lemon. So hopefully you can find some hot werewolves that secretly has even grosser lemons that you can have freaky sex with, then make lemonade.

3.5⭐️ rounded up.

I do not know what to think of this book. It took me a while to read it. I kept thinking I might not pick it up again after I put it down this time bit I kept going back to the book. There was a lot of the lore of the world that was not explained for quite a while in the story, but it makes sense a little sense for us as a reader not to know as Cody himself is clueless. But the information drip of the lore during the course of the book made me a little unhappy. Parts of the book made it seem like we should already know what the lore is or it seemed like there was a build up to a sequel (which is unlikely at this point in time) which was slightly annoying.

But in the end just like with Roscoe creeping up and growing on Cody, this story grew on me. I started to like the characters, well most of them. There is genuineness in how the relationships between Rocsoe, Cody, Adam and Austin progresses and also the ones with Mosavi, Willa and Darryl added in. The trauma is faced but not entirely defeated. There isn't a cure all for the people in this story but there is a happy ending as all of them work towards being better for themselves and each other.

This wasn't a full 5 stars because the world was not as well explained for me personally. I like a little straightforwardness in my magical worlds as I am not too deep of a thinker. And there are loose threads left hanging at the end with no guarantee of a sequel. But I have to say I loved Roscoe and Cody and I hope to hear more of their shenanigans sometime.

It was really enjoyable.

I'm not exactly sure what to say. It was a pleasure to read. I read it years ago when it was first started being written, and it was the first English-language book I ever read. It holds a special place for me. I really liked that some scenes that bothered me were changed. It's more readable and enjoyable this way. Adding a few extra chapters at the end was also a nice touch. The book feels complete in this form. There's no need for a second book. Of course, it would be great. I was sometimes very annoyed with Adam and Austin, even Cody and Roscoe. Every character was fun. I hope everyone who reads this book finds a lot to relate to. You did a fantastic job, Aeron. I thank you with all my heart for giving me the opportunity to read such a beautiful story.

Hes done it again.. Another pack i wish to be part of!

This book has much more cheeky humour in than his previous works, and im in love with it!
you start your journey with a lonely guy, in a world where werewolves are everywhere, undesireable in modern society, on his way home, Cody gets approached by a big werewolf guy asking for change.. wait this guy is fun!

you get to see how four hairy boys crammed into a cruddy house through a government scheme can go wrong! But stick with it, because the shennanigans, heartfelt moments, character development and plot have me hooked.. yes.. another book with some hefty claws peeps. Damn, im seeing a pattern here.

This man knows how to create Werewolf stories!

Keep them coming Aeron!

I did not know what to expect when I bought this book, but I am so happy I gave it a chance!

I fell in love with this small part of a special world, this wonderfull pack and these complex characters that had a lot of growing to do. This author gave us characters that are hard to like from the first page, but by the end I was rooting for all of them!

A lot is not explained about this world and for a book that is very casual about sex, there are almost no explicit sex scenes. These last two points were on my mind after finishing this story, but in no way took away from my enjoyment of the story.

'When Life Gives you Werewolves' was a casual read I picked up and figured, "Why not. Werewolves and romance. It's fun at the very least.
But I was pleasantly surprised to find a cast of characters I enjoyed a lot, even with their flaws. I became surprisingly invested in a pleasant and at times compelling narrative that made me wonder about the lore of this world.
It was truly a wonderful read for this type of book and if you see this book and would consider reading it because of what it says on the cover alone, then read it. You will not be dissapointed.

I read the EPUB version that was released on the author's Patreon and I loved it. Binged it and was difficult to stop reading after I started.

There's a lot of dark and heavy moments but, it's a very nice and wholesome story overall that touches on many serious social themes and literally thematics. From homelessness, addiction, major childhood trauma, PTSD, physical, emotional and sexual abuse to manipulation, loss, grief, economic struggles... but there's also friendship, humour, found-family, "coming-of-age", growth, hope and love.

And of course, big, muscular, gay werewolves.

Like Aeron's stories this one too tells of someone looking to find their family, and a home of their own.
It's another amazing read from this author, every character here has their own troubles and traumas which make them who they are, and throughout the book they must work through their pasts to build themselves a future.
Cody is someone I feel a lot of people could relate to, and is someone a lot could strive to be. The issues faced in the book are big ones, and that makes the story feel so much more alive. Another book I'll come back to in future to read again.

A journey into what a true family is...

This book will make you laugh, cry and learn what family is. One of the best coming of age stories, in more ways then one, that I have a read. It's a journey into what a true family is. With all the jagged edges, messy mistakes , truths and lies we've all have done and experienced. It's a like a a roller coaster ride into a wonderful sunset. The characters draw you in and leaving you wanting more. I hope will get another story to see how this pack evolves and grows.

Tbh, I read this because I thought it was going to be smuttier, I did not expect to cry like a baby by the end of it. It's very much like a modern retelling of It's a Wonderful Life but with gay werewolves. The author finds a way to make you care about all the characters, even the seemingly irredeemable ones. The ending is really well done as well and actually tied everything together rather than just springing the end on you like some novels seem too. I recommend this book to anyone willing to give it a shot.

surprising at every point

That was quite the emotional read. In the beginning, I didn’t really like Roscoe. I felt extremely sorry for Cody, too. As the story kept going and more people were introduced, I had no idea where the author was going. It felt disjointed, but then pieces came together and it started making sense. By the end of the book, I was left with this sense of joy and belonging.

I can honestly say to give this book a try. It feels like life throwing you a chance.

I just happened to stumble upon this book by accident while looking for good books to read. Well I absolutely fell in love with the Mr Dusks writing style when I read WLGYW.
I was not expecting to get so tied up in these characters, the development is absolutely amazing and even though it’s mostly comedic he was able to put parts in that had me crying my eyes out.
Overall I highly recommend this book as well as his other ones he’s put out! It’s a whole creative universe

Read this story from the Patreon and discord server of the author.

A sexy and hairy story about trauma, acceptance, found family. Filled with characters that feel, if not human, like real people with baggage that yearn to belong.

Love the world building, love the romance, love the found family, love the sexy stuff. Holding my hopes up for a sequel.

Gut-wrenching story. I was shaking and in tears by the end, and I would give anything to forget it and get to read it again. I was not expecting the amount of character development. It is sad that there will not be a sequel, but the ending was satisfying, so I shall let it rest.
(I've always been emotional, so take this with a pinch or two of salt.)

A werewolf comedy drama

A wonderful story about not giving up when the world throws a heck of a curve ball. Plenty of comedic moments with likable characters and characters that grow to be likable. I couldn't put it down as I want to reread it again for how much I enjoyed it.

Whenever I read a great book I get so overwhelmed with emotion that it makes me want to cry. Not because I’m sad that it’s over (I am tho) but because I got to experience a piece of art that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

His best work following The Mark of Amulii and The Varcross Key, Aeron Dusk alights the reader on Cody's story, a recent werewolf half-turn who finds his way into leading a strongly bonded pack and finding love in a mate. Dusk effectively develops each character through their impulsive antics, well-timed humor, and the world's magic, weaving a story that shows how we may find love and play despite the suffering and shames that cling to us from our pasts. Dusk's work shows how we may find love in those that can be very different from us, and how we may find safety and room to breathe for our full and soft emotional selves. For the third time now, Dusk exceptionally demonstrates nuanced and well-crafted story telling, bringing comfort and hope to those who wander alone.

Aeron Dusk is, as always, an absolute master class on werewolf romance in any given setting. This novel is spectacular the characters are given incredible depth and even the ones I dislike eventually manage to grow on me by the end. The world feels so real that you could envision it perfectly and even recreate the scents yourself, it pulls you in and never wants to let you go. The most prominent flaw in this novel is it's pacing, where the are several portions that seem incredibly slow, I've grown to appreciate them more as the plot develops, but at the time they were almost slog adjacent. This does not last for long however, as most if not all of the slow sections are immediately followed by some dramatic advancement in the plot enticing you to continue further. The characters are loveable, they're sad, they're aggravating, they're real, and I would not have them any other way.
