Rounding up from 3.5 stars. Not quite what I wanted—more witchcraft and monster than ghost, but still unnerving. The suspense builds as an ancient myth plays out in the modern world, as this story and within the story. The characters are vivid with the four ghost hunters being complex, hurting and caring while their hosts are only mysterious.
The peregrinations throughout the castle passageways, towers and tunnels are well-explained if somewhat tedious. The ending is well-paced.
The authors introduces a few unusual words abruptly towards the end which are understood due to contact yet throw the reader out on the flow. I was thankful for the insight into Claire’s character that prevented her being just a stereotype.
(There’s a discontinuity of a person with bound hands patting another adult on the head (264) and a few typos.)
