Little Miss HISTORY Travels to Gettysburg is a standout addition to Barbara Ann Mojica’s beloved Miss HISTORY series and a true gem for children, parents, and educators alike. With clarity and compassion, Miss HISTORY guides young readers through the town of Gettysburg, helping them understand why this small crossroads became the setting for one of the most pivotal moments in American history. Complex ideas are presented in an accessible way, balancing the broader strategy of the Civil War with deeply human stories—most notably the moving story of Jennie Wade, which offers children a meaningful personal connection to the past.

The book excels in both educational value and presentation. Thoughtfully integrated historical images and artifacts, paired with Victor Ramon Mojica’s beautiful illustrations, bring the 1800s vividly to life. A well-crafted glossary further enhances the experience, making challenging terms and concepts easy to understand without overwhelming young readers. Whether used to prepare for a visit to Gettysburg, spark classroom discussion, or enrich a home library, this book opens the door to curiosity, empathy, and a lasting appreciation for history. Truly, it deserves a place in every child’s collection—and once readers discover this journey, they’ll want to explore all of Miss HISTORY’s travels. Another great book!

Bringing humanity to facts and figures

The Little Miss History books are an amazing series. The iconic young lady has traveled to some of the most historic cities and monuments, bringing humanity to facts and figures, and making learning history both enjoyable and educational.
This time Little Miss visits Gettysburg and solidifies the importance of this “small town in Pennsylvania” that played a pivotal role in the Union’s victory over the Confederacy, and the end of the Civil War.
The illustrations by Victor Ramon Mojica are vibrant, with Little Miss History inserted strategically into significant photos and scenes from the era. In the photos we see the faces of real people, who had hopes and dreams, and whose destiny was wrought by their sacrifices. One poignant story - that of citizen Jennie Wade who was the only civilian casualty when a stray bullet pierced the door of her sister’s home and fatally struck Jennie - is one that you hear little of. But it brings home just how personal and tragic war is. The book is dedicated to her.
The series has won numerous awards, and the books are treasured by parents and educators who know that the gentle, easy to read stories only whet their children’s appetite for more. And that’s a treasure in itself.

Little Miss HISTORY Travels To GETTYSBURG is a great book to make history come alive and make learning history actually interesting instead of boring! I love the real life photos and pictures with Little Miss History in them to tell the history of the battle of Gettysburg. The facts were very interesting and even though I have visited Gettysburg and learned about it in school, there were lessons in this book that I didn't even know about.
This is a great book for any school or home library!

Like so many of these Little Miss History books, I learned quite a bit reading this. I had no idea the battle at Gettysburg was unplanned! The armies from each side just happened to go to this town on the same day for supplies!
The information in this book is told in an easy to comprehend way and as always the illustrations are excellent. Recommended for grade school children.

This story starts with a brief explanation of who was fighting in The Civil War and why, then proceeds to lay out the unusual circumstances that led to The Battle of Gettysburg. It creates interest right from the beginning and continues at a pace that keeps the flow of information engaging. The photos of real people during that time are very impactful and help bring the story to life even more.

Great idea! The heart and history are there, the illustrations shine, but the text feels a little unpolished. With tighter editing, this could soar!
