This does a great job of describing how Hip Hop originated in the Bronx from the perspective of Grandmaster Flash, the inventor of the quick mix therory, while also acknowledging the other massive DJs there at the time, Kool Herc and Afrika Baambataa, who are also legendary to it's inception. So many well known DJ and emcees are quoted and flash is a very humble man who knows the culture,50 years and running now is much bigger than him alone. While mostly this book tells his story and how he spent 3 years figuring out which turntables and how to modify them led to both scratching and cutting as a way to extend the break beats to rev up parties and give emcees something to riff over. It was really the end of the Disco era and that became part of it too, since mixing was invented via Disco. There is also some mention of graffiti artists such as Lady Pink, Zephyr and Futura 2000. For the full story on that,Fab 5 Freddy's recent book tells it in depth. In retrospect breakdancers and electric boogie bboys and girls barely get a mention, but perhaps one of the Rock Steady Crew will one day write that and since it's a visual thing like graf I suppose Hollywood framed it well back in the 80's. For me at nearly 60 years old it all brings back a nostsalgia for my youth and that pioneering spirit provided by the GOATs of this industry.
