《牛仔不在家》是吳衍震在美國聖塔菲藝術中心的駐村創作成果。延續了吳衍震在台灣十年駐點計畫，創作者用移動的形式探索人與環境萬物的依存關係，以人類學、生態學、美學的範疇關注人類當下的生活處境，樹木、岩石、動物、雲層、星星各自發光，廣大的宇宙構成了魔幻的神話元素，透過三個月的沙漠生活體驗，除了每天的隨興塗鴉草圖，還有英文短詩、日記書寫、立體雕塑、繪畫作品、攝影…等。
