Lyra was only a child when war stole her family. Forged in its fire, she rose as a commander, her strength tempered by grief and resilience. But now the battlefield lies silent, and a new darkness coils through the Kingdom of Celestra. A Tyrant sits upon the throne, cloaking cruelty in trials that seem harmless, while the ashes of war drift, refusing to settle.
As shadows deepen, Lyra must confront the silence left by battle and the insidious power that threatens to consume her kingdom. To bow is to surrender everything she has fought for; to resist is to ignite rebellion once more. In a world where scars still burn and prophecy lingers in the smoke, Lyra’s choice will decide whether Celestra rises from ruin… or falls into tyranny forever.
L. Clauson loves weaving epic fantasy filled with elemental magic, prophecy, and characters who find strength in their flaws. A veteran and lifelong puzzle‑solver, she brings the same joy of building, crafting, and problem‑solving into her stories. When she’s not writing, she’s designing mythical sigils or enjoying creative projects with her family in Oklahoma—all while refining her first fantasy series.
I really enjoyed Ashes of Air and Fire by L. Clauson. The worldbuilding was immersive, the characters felt real, and the emotional moments actually landed instead of feeling forced. Lyra was probably my favorite part because she felt strong without ever feeling unrealistic, and some of her struggles genuinely stuck with me after I finished reading like the fact that she had to luve up to other expectations while still finding herself. One thing I especially loved was the magic system and how air is treated as the rare element because it made the world feel unique compared to a lot of other fantasy books I’ve read. Overall, it’s a story full of emotion, tension, and beautiful writing, and it definitely left me excited to see where the story goes in book two.

This book was pure fun from start to finish. Lyra and Evander’s tension practically crackled off the page, and when it finally exploded, it exploded. Their dynamic had me hooked the whole way through.
The found family vibes were everything, and the magic system had layers I didn’t see coming. Evander especially… yeah, he shocked me in ways I was not prepared for.
Loved this book! It had amazing imagery and the plot was detailed. I didn’t want to put it down because I had to see what was going to happen next. Definitely ready for book 2!
I knew this was going to be a great book but I had no idea just how much I’d fall in love with it. Thank goodness there is another book that is coming out because I need more!! The characters really come to life in the story and I love that so much! I love Lyra and how feral she is! I enjoyed when there is a strong FMC that isn’t reliant upon someone else throughout the story! I’m so glad I was introduced to the fantasy world because I’d never read this book had I not been! Definite five star read for sure!!
L. Clauson has crafted a breathtaking masterpiece in The Ashes of Air & Fire, a high-stakes fantasy that masterfully bridges the gap between the visceral trauma of war and the suffocating tension of a political thriller. From the very first page, Lyra emerges as a powerhouse protagonist—flawed, fierce, and hauntingly relatable as she navigates a kingdom where the "peace" is far more dangerous than the battlefield. Clauson’s prose is evocative and atmospheric, painting the Kingdom of Celestra with such vivid, smoky detail that you can almost feel the heat of the rising rebellion and the chill of the Tyrant’s shadow. The emotional depth of Lyra’s journey, combined with a breakneck pace and a truly sinister antagonist, makes this an unmissable epic for anyone who craves stories of resilience, prophecy, and the indomitable human spirit.
The Ashes of Air and Fire completely pulled me in. I went into this one blind and ended up flying through it, fully invested in Lyra, her journey, and the world around her.
Lyra is exactly the kind of FMC I love: strong, fierce, and a little feral, but still deeply human. She’s shaped by grief and war, but she never loses her determination or sense of self. I especially loved the found family dynamic she builds with her troop. Their loyalty, shifting relationships, and the way they welcome Evander into their circle added so much warmth and heart to the story.
Evander was another standout. His steady support and quiet presence balanced Lyra’s fire so well, and the tension between them was so satisfying. You know where things are headed, but the build-up makes it all the more worth it.
The pacing kept me hooked, the villain felt genuinely threatening, and the emotional depth gave the story real weight. This is the kind of book that makes you resent your responsibilities because all you want to do is keep reading.
The audiobook made the experience even better. Dee Reads brought so much strength and emotion to Lyra, making her trauma and resilience feel incredibly real, while the male narrator gave Evander a grounded warmth that fit his character perfectly. If you enjoy audiobooks, I highly recommend experiencing this story that way.
A beautifully written romantasy with found family, a fierce heroine, slow-burn tension, and an adventure that’s hard to put down.
I absolutely fell in love with this story! Lyra is such a strong FMC that cares too much about protecting everyone, over caring for herself, especially her Troup, which is her found family. She has the weight of the world on her shoulders, but she carries it well. The MMC Evander is the perfect counterweight Lyra needs to anchor her if she will only let him in. This is the first book in the series, and you quickly get invested in the characters. I love the found family element and the banter that flows through them. I imersive read/listened to this book with both the book & audio book at the same time, making the experience even better. If you like audio books, definitely give this a listen. The narrator does such a fantastic job bringing the story to life and adding the feelings to the words. I can't wait to see where the story goes from here. This was easily a 5 star read it sucked me in from the beginning and held my attention the entire time. I'm ready for book 2 to be finished like yesterday, so I can find out what happens.
Lyra is exactly the kind of powerhouse heroine I love to root for—she’s got this incredible, hardened strength from being a wartime commander, but it’s her deep vulnerability and resilience that genuinely kept me hooked. The tension is so brilliantly done, shifting from the loud chaos of the battlefield to this creepy, suffocating political game with a silent tyrant on the throne. The world of Celestra feels so vivid, the stakes are massive, and that ominous sense of prophecy in the air had me turning pages like crazy. If you want a brilliant fantasy that perfectly balances a fierce lead with an intense, gripping plot, you seriously need to grab a copy of this immediately!
