First off, thanks to the author for reaching out with a gifted copy! 🫶🏻 I spent most of my time reading this more confused than anything else, if I'm being completely honest 😅
The plot itself took a while to get off the ground.
It was super slow at first, and the killer and Detective Gallo's son having such similar names kept completely throwing me off but once the momentum finally picked up, I couldn't put it down and I just had to know what was going to happen next.
The crescendo of the book genuinely had me on the very edge of my seat and I thought he was finally about to get caught, but then out of nowhere, the vibe completely shifted. The random plot point with Gallo’s wife’s suicide threat literally had me saying "what the fuck" 😫 out loud and I don’t really get why it was added right there? It felt like the wrong time and totally pulled me out of the main tension just as it was getting good. It was like a rollercoaster teetering on the edge but then never dropping.
Thankfully, it did recover itself and the actual ending was pretty satisfying but my only real lingering wish is that Nico and his mother had actually sat down for a proper conversation. I really wanted them to dig into why she gave him away and how that potentially spiralled into the choices he made throughout the book.
A solid middle-of-the-road thriller with some crazy high points but a few pacing bumps along the way! 📖✨
