Ivy vs Ivy

Hjalmar tog upp sitt finger i luften. Fingret landade fem centimeter in på Ivys sida.

Well, that was a lil cute book! Only 100 pages and written for preteen kids.

I picked it because of its cover, that just… speaks to me somehow. One half a total mess, and the other very orderly and neat. Maybe because that’s how life feels sometimes, doesn’t it?

As an adult that works in a school (as a school librarian, not a teacher) this book actually gave me a lot of understanding of many of the so-called troublesome kids/teens. How they might have a homelife that might be full of love but where there’s no order to anything. Which, of course, affects the kid in question. And how the kid's best friend in the whole world has a bad influence on the kid… but the kid can’t see that.

All of this is the case with Ivy. She’s a bully, but she doesn’t see that herself. She’s smart as heck, but doesn’t do her homework properly, because she hates everything and thinks everything is dumb.

Her mom sleeps all day and is one of those artistic people that thinks expression is more important than order.

And then there’s a classmate whose family is ECTREMLY orderly instead… Sparks fly, she bullies him without knowing that’s what she’s doing, until shit hits the fan in the best of ways.

I love and adore Ivy’s teacher in this. Quite a young teacher, but a woman that actually SEES Ivy for who she is and what she is. Not all teachers or staff at schools are like that, but those that are? They are SO important! Worth their weight in gold! Don’t know if I’m like that, but I can hope.

So even though this was such a short and easy book, it touches on a lot of subjects, and I’m sure the preteen kids can relate A LOT with Ivy!

Fun to read for an adult too! Brilliant debut from Johan Persson!
