LOVE-RACE-DESTINY Manav Modi and Deepak Mehra are poles apart – one down to earth, the other flamboyant; one introvert, the other overtly loud; one aspiring to be rich, the other born with a silver spoon. Except their feelings for Urvashi, they have nothing in common. Yet, they are ‘friends’.
They part ways, only to come together in a web of destiny that puts them against each other, testing their friendship, love, patience, and even their choice of a profession!
Will this race between CA and MBA lead them to a fall, or do they need something more to pull them out of the mess created by The 3 U-Turns of My Life?
Jeet Gian was a happening person till he became a chartered accountant (and got married). He has been practicing accounting, auditing and business advisory services under JCA Consulting Group in Dubai-UAE since 2001. He is CEO and Chairman of the company with offices in Dubai, Sharjah, Jebel Ali Free Zone, Hamriyah Free Zone and…perhaps planet Mars (by 2019).
Humorous and simple narration made story-line unambiguous. Author himself is CA and has given enough insights about devils of CA profession.
Manav Modi a middle class CA aspirant is the protagonist of the story and the author, Jitendra, has shown the struggle of his family through various phases of his life. He has a friend, Deepak Mehra, his arch-enemy. Deepak always to provoke Manav to achieve his goals to become successful CA. Manav also considered Deepak to be a competition for Urvashi Doshi, his love interest.
A typical story of good winning over evil with lots of twists and 3 U-turns..
3.5 stars! I won this through the Goodreads First Reads giveaway.
It's one of the very few books by an Indian author that I have managed to read completely. So kudos for that. I usually DNF halfway.
I liked the plot, loved the epilogue! I'm not going into details about that, though. Mr Gianchandani has dealt with emotions and relationships very well. The book has a set of very diverse and believable characters.
I was expecting a love story. I got so much more. Gujarati people are adorable! There were a lot of humorous moments and I'm a CA Final student so I get all of it. I get the pain too. I'm definitely recommending this to my CA friends BTW!
The peeves:
The first few times I read the words mugged/mugger, I suffered microscopic cardiac arrests because: "I'm a nerdy CA - a born mugger." Is that what ICAI did back in the 2000s? Train muggers? Is training muggers even a thing? Oh! Haha. My bad. By mugging, you meant rote-learning and not robbing people in shady alleys? That's fine with me. If urban dictionary okays mugging to be used in this context, I can concede. Not.
"I picked up my black leather jacket, unbolted the door and jumped out like a hare."
"Manav beta(son), you have enjoyed life on your father's income till now. Now you're entering a new phase, which is donkey's phase. You have to work and earn for the dependants until you get retired and then enter another phase, which is monkey's phase."
Get what I'm saying? There are a few really bad moments writing-wise.
Count of grammatical/spelling/typographical errors: 26. That's a lot of errors for a 280 pages book. So, guys, if you are reading this, I know this is unorthodox but I have an offer. I can proofread or beta for you in exchange for iced mocha or gift vouchers. I'm being serious. I could start by emailing the list of mistakes that I've noted in this book. :D
I generally stay away from mainstream Indian writers whose stories reek of being generic and that combined with the name of this book wasn't all that appealing to me, sounding like a knockoff of a very famous Indian novel.
But the reviews on this site were all very positive which was definitely a very enthusiastic push for me to even enter the giveaway for this book. Sadly, my enthusiasm was let down by a book which was disappointing.
Some of the very things I'd like to mention would be-
1. "to leave for the airport. to leave for the airport." A very obvious error on the very first page. I would request the author to please seek a better editor. Errors are very distracting, and especially when they are as blatant as this one, hardly some 30 words into the story, they make for a very poor impression on the reader.
2. The use of first person in this book was probably not a good decision. Consequences of note seemed to be that the protagonist ended up sounded like a conceited narcissist and also like a robot at times. The use of third person could have easily solved this issue and made the character a lot more likeable than he came across as.
3. The hand at humour. It just didn't flow.
But I suppose it is enjoyable if one wants some light-hearted entertainment.
2/5. As the 2 star rating suggests, it was OK. Nothing more, nothing less.
Got this book as a free giveaway on Goodreads. Romance, Suspense, Thrill, humour, passion..you name it, the book has it all! The best part is how inspired and life-like the characters turn out to be. There is ample drama to keep you glued to the very last page.
First of all, the title reminds you of Chetan Bhagat’s 3 Mistakes of My Life. You might put this book down even before picking up, if you don’t turn it around and read its catchy description. With a simple and meaningful design, this book is easy to miss if you go by the cover. As this book says, it is all about Chartered Accountant versus Master of Business Administration.
All the characters in this story are close to real life. The author, Jitendra Gianchandani, shows the struggle of middle class families through the protagonist, Manav Modi. He has a friend, Deepak Mehra, to provoke him enough to reach his goals and the love interest, Urvashi Doshi, to support him all along. This is a typical story of good winning over evil with lots of twists and 3 U-turns.
At the first U-turn, I was getting a feeling that I am watching another version of Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal’s OMG! Oh My God! At the second U-turn, it was obvious that Manav would win. At the third U-turn, heights of cliché. Author could have made the earthquake itself as one of the U-turns just to make the story different from other Bollywood masala flicks. Did I say earthquake? Yes, that is one more thing common with Chetan Bhagat’s 3 Mistakes of My Life.
Narration is humorous and is in first person. It does manage to make the reader laugh and by that I mean not laugh at it. The author knows what he is writing about and there is no confusion in the storyline. This story will not bore you for sure. Now that I have told you that Manav would win, go ahead and read this story to find out whether he is a Chartered Accountant or a Master of Business Administration.
Why does everyone wants to be Chetan Bhagat! Like "3 Mistakes of my life " this is "3 u turns of my life "! Like Chetan 's novel this is narrated by 1st person! The author is a CA, and the protagonist of this novel is also CA! Even the story telling way is same! saw a girl, she is beautiful, I feel like that and this blah blah blah. .. Its like author downloaded the Chetan's template and filled with new names! Am just 10 pages into this and I already feel like thank god I didn't spend money on this book, I got it as giveaway in goodreads.
The author hates MBAs. According to him there is no honest MBA! If you are an MBA then you have been trained to be a crook!! He justifies his hatred by making MBAs in this novel always mock CAs! But the irony is that he had to take an MBA's template for his novel. I mean Chetan Bhagat 's template! It starts from name like 3 mistakes of my life this one is 3 u turns of my life! actually there is no u turns in this story. They are just decisions. And author didn't even bother to change the number! I mean at least he could have named 4 u turns of my life!! Dude have Shamelessly copied from MBA and u tell that CAs are better than them!! Spoiler alert: The author has desparately failed in telling CAs are better! The protagonist doesn't actually steer the company out of mess using his CAs acumen but instead by luck!! The name of the book should have been 3 blessings from God! Yeah, 3 times god saves the protagonist. There is no u turn there!
I got this book (The 3 U turns of my life) as a free giveaway through Goodreads and started it. Even at page 1, I was unsure if this is the same book which got 5 star reviews. "…to leave for CST airport, to leave for CST airport" (yes phrase repeated) was the first grain of sand in this sandwich. Then came Indian phrases like "We were given one month time to...", British and US spellings, opening quote instead of apostrophe, meandering masala which made one put the book down or the book put one to sleep. Jitendra means winner, and jeet means victory, but jeet means worm in Sindhi. There is no gyan (wisdom) or chand (moon) in this book by a gianchandani, so it is more like an worm-filled uncharted voyage by this chartered accountant. And 3 U turns means you are back at square one.
The story starts with very normal relationship mess between two friends, Manav and Deepak. They both are highly explicit in what they need in their lives. The story moves really slowly and you not read anything new till the middle of the novel. The first u-turn was very simple but it touches you. The way the hustle-bustle settles is quite surprising but the answer to your queries are delivered at the end, leaving a smile on your face. Epilogues at the end answer all your queries which you might have not got in your mind. There are a lot of people with very small appearance in the chapters that you almost forget who was playing what part. When everyone is happy in the end, things quite naturally seems perfect, though your brain isn’t saying the same story.
This book is about a guy called Manav (a CA) and his race with another guy called Deepak (an MBA). This book was really sexist and a weak plot dragged on almost indefinitely. I stopped reading it about fifty pages before it ended because it started getting really boring. Also, the editing is so cringe-worthy it made me wonder if grammar even exists.
A Nice cover and a good prologue were good enough reasons to get me through the first couple of chapters
But then...
The first person narration started to look like not so good good an idea in the first place, adding to it was the 'trying to be funny' sentences throughout the book (was it deliberate attempt to show how CAs don't have a good sense of humor?)
By choice of the author, every character other than Manav Modi is one-dimensional. By default, there's nothing much to say about them.
But, in the end--like a good good ol' bollywood movie, it's all good. Which is a good thing.
Finally, the 3 U-turns is a ultra-light read packed with heaps of spelling mistakes, attempt at unnecessary humor and a filmy climax(the one with a baby) which literally begs for the Eastman color 'THE End' animation.
Thank you once again for the book! (Not meeting you at an airport.)
From the cover, the story looks like a love story though it’s not about love only. The author wants to unfold the life of CA professionals. In this story, there is a race between a CA and an MBA. The idea is quite good. A story without engineers on it ;-)
The author had also shown the ups and down which came in the life of Manav Modi, a beautiful relationship of Manav and Urvashi, an untold way of friendship between Manav and Deepak Mehra. The most intriguing part in this book was how the little boy Manav supports his family in need. The book depicts the stringent corporate life and how greed pushes people to hell.
The narration and the language are very simple and understandable. The book is a nice read but sometimes I felt losing my interest in the book. Few times the story ran in very fast pace which is a turn off for readers.
Goodreads win. WIll read and review once received.
This was a very simple book to read. It was a quick read, that was read in one sitting. It was a book I could easily enjoy. The book was very entertaining and likable from the beginning to the very end. I really enjoyed the dialogue between the people. It was at times a funny thing to read. I would definitely recommend this book.
Embracing Life's Transformative Turns: Love, Race, and Destiny - A Dream 😍 Journey
Each U-turn has been a transformative journey, teaching valuable lessons about love, compassion, acceptance, and the beauty of life's unpredictability. These moments have redefined my perspectives, enriching life with diverse experiences and guiding toward a more empathetic and fulfilling existence.
Well written 🙏 Good light hearted novel one time read
The 3 U-Turns of My Life brings you Manav Modi and Deepak Mehra, two opposite personalities with a strange relation of friendship and a common love interest, Urvashi. Life brings them on crossroad joints with regards to career and personal life and of course there are U-turns too. Who will win Manav , Deepak or say… life?
Spot on point- its not engineering life discussed in it, there is CA and MBA much to make it refreshing. The idea of giving such career background importance along with the romance quotient worked well for the book; I liked how the corporate world, career and family balance is discussed in the book making it much more than a romantic tale. The relations discussed in the book is rather interesting there is a different shade to each let it family bonding, love or friendship. The plot is youthful and easy to connect with. The writing style is simple and effective for the story. There are points in the story that could make you chuckle and there are a some where you might grin wide. A realistic story to follow on.
I personally did not like the title of the book; it felt pretty similar to three mistakes of my life; if you get what i mean! Also the story was predictable , i think it could have been much better. Overall a good one time read.
The future is absent, the past is cumbersome, and the present is lost. The shadows move, trying to chase, to take. They will lose. And they meet again. No, not the destiny to want it, and not even them and the life they have shared that bound them from friends, lovers to enemies. Three boys misunderstood before. The real reason that plasma stories, lives, individuals first, then shadows who delude themselves that is only a part of their reality.
The book is a story of a continuous and improvised perpetual existence, of what could, and would have to be. The reader is enchanted in the silences who, like boulders, blocking the natural flow of the spirit. But, despite the sinking in deeper darkness perhaps there is a chance to re-emerge on the surface and, even if briefly, breathing deeply of the shadow of a dream in which you can still invent radio plays, listen to jazz to understand the world, pining to love her, or that she because if you're young does not matter who, but how to love and come up with new stories, adventures or neologisms, to give voice to that which has no name. We must, however, look for a reason to go back, to be reunited again. Just as it was.
The future is absent, the past is cumbersome, and this may begin to flow. There is talk of friendship, of love, of pain, that marks the people, their way of acting and living the little things every day because everyone is fighting their own personal battle without a gun. Perhaps not the most important, the lives that are important once again intertwined to support one another and imbued with memories of love that make many gestures and emotions the simulacrum of a human being of flesh and blood, some to take with us to the days ahead. The end? Maybe it depends on intuition and sensitivity of everyone understands.
It’s a challenging book, and you have to enter the part of the characters and try to understand the depth of their feelings and of their fears, the value of their choices.
Manav and Deepak have nothing in common and yet they are friends. Manav aspires to become a Chartered Accountant while Deepak has keen interest in doing MBA. Deepak detests CAs and always has something bad to comment upon them. Manav hates him for this.
Also, Deepak’s father is responsible for ruining Manav’s father’s business and ultimately, Manav’s life. How is he responsible? (Read the story!) This adds fuel to the fire. Manav and Deepak are just tolerating each other in the name of being friends. Urvashi acts like a glue and keeps them together. Life starts when they move out to colleges to pursue their profession. After many nights of hardship and dedication, all 3 finally pass out from their colleges to face the wold.
Urvashi joins a PR company and Deepak and Manav real estate. Deepak is like the hare from ‘The Hare and The Tortoise’ tale. His career graph rockets high up in a matter of few months whereas Manav, being the tortoise, is doing slow. Manav’s boss hires Deepak for his upcoming project. And then the real game begins.
Who will win this game? The Hare? Or The Tortoise? Read to find it out!
My Take:
The story of The 3 U-Turns of My Life is predictable. There have been many instances where the incidents are dragged unnecessarily. The readers may grow disinterest because of it. The narration is simple, fluent and easily understandable. The naming of the chapters has been done incredibly well.
Likes: Manav’s 5-D rule. Manav’s ‘never-give-up’ attitude. Deepak’s sad story. ( He deserved much better life, back home. It was really touching one.) The Epilogues.
Dislikes: The font size could have been increased and so also the paragraph spacing.
I rate: Cover: 2.5/5 Story: 3.5/5 Characters : 3/5
My rating for ‘The 3 U-Turns of My Life’ is 3/5 stars.

It will be a good book for you if you want to become a CA or you’re a Gujarati. Rest will consider it not so great but not bad too.
Plot
This book follows a story of an honest boy who ants to become a CA and his struggles in thus corruption driven society and his race to get ahead of his friend who is an MBA.
Writing style
The writing style disappointed me. I think mostly all the novels written by Indian authors are not up to tje mark in the writing category. They lack something and I don’t know what that is but it’s crucial to keep the reader intact. Everytime I read a novel written by an Indian author I don’t feel like reading it. Warning: I’m proud to be an Indian. It’s just that their writing style doesn’t suit me.
Characters
There were mainly 3 characters- Manav, the CA; Deepak, the MBA and Urvashi, the journalist. And this novel was narrated from the view point of Manav and he tells the hardships he faced in his life. Clearly Urvashi was not at all a good character. She was annoying and sometimes stupidly over-excited. Like there was a scene of their school life and please note that Manav, Deepak and Urvashi are close friends (and friends only) and Manav didn’t tell Urvashi where has his father invested his money in and she gets so angry and Manav had to literally beg her for forgiveness. And that was so idiotic that I literally wanted to run away. -_- Rest the novel was a okay read and I continued it just because I wanted to know what happens to a person after becoming a CA.
MY RATING– 1.5/5 for a non-CA or non-Indian And 2.5/5 for an aspiring CA or an Indian
Well reading the name of the novel it did seem like The Three Mistake from Chetan Bhagat. As the writer himself is a CA , he has described the professional part profoundly. Though from the cover it may seem like it’s a love story yet it is more than just a love story. It’s a combo pack of all the feelings that a well built and well framed novel requires. The humorous and simple narration made story-line unambiguous. Manav Modi a middle class CA aspirant is the protagonist of the story . The struggle of him and his family has been shown through various phases of life. He has a friend, Deepak Mehra. Deepak always to provoke Manav to achieve his goals to become successful CA. Manav also considered Deepak to be a competition for Urvashi Doshi, his love interest. A typical story of good winning over evil with lots of twists and 3 U-turns. Though a predictable one, it’s fun to read episodes and those ups and downs in one’s life , to achieve their goals yet not by any evil means. It’s a challenging book, and you have to enter the part of the characters and try to understand the depth of their feelings and of their fears, the value of their choices. The language of the book is lucid and simple. It keeps the reader engaged in it’s flow. The book with the simple story yet describing it as an extraordinary one is worth reading.
I received the book as a part of goodreads giveaway. The book's good. Many guys have said that its like chetan bhagat's book , well , i can't comment on that but yeah it really good. Anyone who like drama , romance , secret will like it .
ABOuT THE BOOK the book is about a boy named manav modi , who is a succesful C.A of reputed company while he is travalling he meet a boy who too want's to be a CA but is dropping out because of financial crisis and going to earn quick money he meet manav , is being told about his past since the situation of manav was similar.
A PEEK IN THE PAST
Manav is aspirant to be a C.A , he is good at cramming so he score damn good marks. Mr. CA to be , has some friends urvashi , whom he love and admire and Deep , who hates the CA profession because of a reason ( i will reveal later) and wants to be an MBA instead , so deepak and manav didn't go along very well. as the story moves on , manv's father is cheated at the hand of deepak's father who is a corrupt politician. a there a credit of 20 lakhs to be paid by manav's father due to which hatred between manav and deepak increase. As the saying goes, misfortune never comes alone , gujrat is hit by earthquake after which the property of manav is destroyed so he lives in the house of his uncle who advices him to start selling life insurance due to crisis and he has to drop his dream to be CA. but after some obstacles he did become a successful CA
I received this book as a goodreads giveaway.. and this happens to be the first one that I won :)
Summary: The story is about the journey of the protagonist Manav and his friends Deepak and Urvi. It starts from choosing the right career path after school where Manav goes on to study CA whereas Deepak turns to MBA. Deepak scorns his choice and thereby starts the rivalry to prove to each other that their choice is far better and will lead to success; also it is an effort to prove their worth to Urvi whose attention both are vying for. Their paths cross once again once they start working. So who will win, the CA or the MBA? Who will win Urvi's love? And will all three of them find success in their chosen field? ... well read it to find the answers.
My thoughts: It wasn't a great book, there were lots of faults. It was like, the story is good but the writing is not. I found the whole CA and MBA competitiveness very fake and in the face. It would have been better if it hadn't been harped on and on about.
Now the good things. Despite the writing, I completed the book, which as per me means the book was good. It wasn't one of those that I just can't put down, but it also wasn't among those which I skimmed through or skipped certain sections or just dropped it for a few days and then forced myself to read it. There were certain parts that I really enjoyed as well. So its "ok".
I won this book in goodreads giveaway and this is the second book I've won. I thank the author for sending me this book. The 3 U Turns of My Life is the story of three friends Manav, the love of his life Urvi, The friend+Enemy of his life Deepak and their journey through the struggles of life and differences in their lives. The main reason for the battle here is CA vs MBA! This battle starts off from their college till the day they make mistakes and learn for themselves the hard way.
My first impression of the book had been very confused as it seemed like old-wine-in-new-bottle. It further deteriorated as the first few chapters went by as I couldn't understand why being a CA is so hard.(I'm an engineering student so I have no clue about this field). Then one of my friends who is doing CA explained to me about the slave life she is leading trying to find success. That's when everything started falling in the place! The story after that became much more interesting and simple. Considering the whole story, it was written for an Indian audience and it contains all the masala for an Indian reader. There was the colloquial language, food references and of course the joint families! There was love, drama, betrayal, hurt, rain and white salwar!! Pakka Bollywood! The story was simple and kept rather nice except for a few minor errors. All together it was a fairly good read!
Engineers are all over in the writing field but this is from a CA and indeed an insight into a CA's life can be witnessed. 3 u turns is the first take by the author Jeet Gian, who is into satirical genre of writing. His narration style is very intriguing, something different from B. Tech regime and with ounces of motivation.
As the title depicts, this is a story of three central characters Manav, Deepak and Urvashi. The title 3 U turn is very apt for the story. Read the novel for knowing more about those crucial U turns of their life.
The story will make you feel connected. While having read half of the novel, one would start imagining as to what may come next, and that is where one starts feeling unsettled, and it becomes even tough to keep the book down. I’d suggest readers to grab one and give it a thorough read.
I’ll happily rate 4/5 for the efforts and would look up for more of his satire filled writings in future.
A nice story line and a catchy main page... this is how I would like to give my review of this book.
As always, Thanks Jeet and Goodreads, for providing this book to me for a free read.
Absolutely interesting and the competition is so strong.
However, the story makes the reader feel for the CA, and makes the reader wish for the CA to win at the end against the MBA.
Well well, there are so many people jealous of MBA's not just the CA... The engineers equally despise the MBA's, when they come in at a young age and pick away the leader roles in front of the person that was waiting and building skills in anticipation of the role for years.
overall, a thumbs up for the book!
And if I could give more stars, I could have, on behalf of 5 more people(and counting) that I shared the book with.
Jeet gian, a CA by profession, is on board with his first write up, and indeed it is full of spices, the flow of writing is excellent, with the twists and turns crazy suffice to make you finish it in one go, here is a gist, Manav, Deepak and Urvashi are friends, but it is totally unusual, (grab a copy now to read why), Manav aspires to become a Chartered Accountant while Deepak has keen interest in pursuing MBA. Deepak dislikes the CA profession and is always cribbing upon them, to know why grab a copy now.
Urvashi joins a PR company and Deepak and Manav real estate. Manav’s boss appoints Deepak for his upcoming project and then the real game begins. Who will win, will the bruises from the past affect judgement of the present, or will intellect be more powerful, go ahead, and find out.
first of all, thanks to Mr.Jitendra for the copy of the book.I really enjoyed the story. the Chase for love and life is shown in a practical view and I appreciate that very much. But everything has its flaw and this book is not an exception.the first and foremost will be the constant mentioning of CA and MBA - honestly every page has these two and it annoys the reader after a certain point.secondly, the author clearly rushed towards the end.The whole story was dramatic but the end is not at all dramatic or even touching. But the bottomline was that a CA can be CEO.the message is clear.I did like the love portions between Manav and Urvi.I wished Riya to be his wife but whatever.. And Finally, this is a good book and I'd recommend it to a fellow reader.Thank you.. ;)
From the realms of engineer, here comes a chartered accountant, all laded with untold stories, urging to be told to the world,
3 u turns describe a predictable yet fun to read episodes in one’s life, a hustle to achieve a stance, with a lady by side, not running a league rather totally different from the rest
A trio comprising Manav Deepak Urvashi all set on verge of completing 3 years of college life, set a foot in real life, with manav aspiring to be a CA and Deepak urging to take on MBA, Urvashi joins a pr company,
Life is smooth until events from past keep haunting, to know more grap a copy and read along,
A predictable and redundant at many points, it is a novel that is a one time read.
i give a 3/5 , wishing more creativity from the author
This is the debut from Author & its pretty good. There are some editing and language issues but that will go with time. The story drafted was good enough to read and enjoy. Destiny, Love, hard work leads to wherever you want to seems to be single thought behind his work. Choice matters and can make a big difference. Sometimes perception leads to the wrong directions. Jeet has used good jargon and use his very knowledge of the field he is dealing in. CA v/s MBA, that's great topic to debut on and he wrote a whole story on it.
I really enjoy the story and its contents as in all. I recommend to go through it once especially those who are related to the field.
