Just finished 'A Cold Hold' by Sanjana Kanamarlapudi and wow, this young author's psychological thriller hits deep!
It follows the sixteen-year-old Gwen Griswold, who attends a remote boarding school, where an old unsolved murder lingers in the shadows. Strange things start happening: whispers in empty rooms, footsteps echoing down deserted halls, voices that feel too real. But Gwen has schizophrenia, so trusting her own mind is the real battle. Is it a ghost? Trauma resurfacing? Or something darker within?
What makes it stand out is that there's no cheap jump scares, just raw, quiet tension exploring fear, memory, silence, and inner strength. The way it handles mental health feels honest and respectful – not just as a twist, but central to Gwen's world. It adds such a bittersweet connection that tugs at your heart, and it's haunting in the best way.
A thoughtful, emotional YA psych-thriller from a super talented teen author. Highly recommend if you love introspective mysteries! 🌟🌟✨🔥
A Cold Hold is not a romance, it's worse: a romantic, supernatural, psychological, mystery... hence no happy ending guarenteed. It's a bittersweet ending, it made me cry! It's journey of the unseen being finally seen & truths being uncovered. The writing style is good.
Gwen is our main character & we see the story unfold from her POV. She lives in a boarding school, one day she encounters a ghost - Ezra Nyx. She's schizophrenic, is this truth or mania?
But what starts as a simple deal of mutual benefit. Chemistry sessions & playing detective to find the culprit of Ezra's murder... A friendship blooms, a closeness one has never felt & other didn't think will ever get to feel again.
I felt bad for what she has to suffer from her family. It's not abuse, but negligence 😩. I loved how Ezra soothes her. They both are so cute. A kiss, a cold touch, but more...?
While the story has its twists & turns, charcters you'll love & root for, it's also a ticking clock. Knowing even if Ezra wants to stay for Gwen... He couldn't. Maybe in another life 😭.
This was why I read this freaking fast & didn't let myself linger, even skipped many - I can't invest too much to get my heartbroken 🥺. But I still remained till the end.
Read this for the mystery, a love to hold on, but remember this line from the blurb: "To the people we cannot keep". If you like that, this is for you.
💙Thank you to the author & organiser for this beautiful paperback review-copy. The page quality is good!
Cold Hold is a strong young adult psychological thriller, that has no boundaries of the genre because it mixes chilling suspense with profound emotional appeal. Set in the dim, airy corridors of a boarding school where a teenage protagonist, Gwen Griswold, starts to feel disturbing things that are hard to explain. What begins as slight and unusual peculiarities whispers in silence, footsteps in empty corridors, turns into something that approaches the realm of the surreal and the imagination. These haunting scenes are associated with a distant and unresolved homicide in the school and they force Gwen to explore mysteries beyond the superficial fear. The chilling atmosphere and the building up of tension in the story make the reader eager to uncover the additional layers of the story more than traditional horror tricks.
The suspense is not the only thing that makes this novel stand out but rather the emotional depth of it. The author intentionally constructs the story around the theme of fear that is internal and formed by the memory, painful experiences that remain unresolved, and the strain of being cleaved to harsh realities. The key proclamation of the book - This is not a haunting story. It is a story about holding on." - stresses that the inner conflict and emotional growth of Gwen is as much of the real tension as the mystery outside. This psychological perspective makes the reading experience not merely an exciting puzzle but a commentary on identity, resilience, and fear itself.
The story of Gwen is the core character of the story. Being the primary viewpoint character, she provides an opportunity to the reader to see not just the suspenseful events occurring around her, but her inner development as well. Her experiences compel her to face embarrassing facts about herself and her own past and challenge her to acknowledge her own emotional strength. This emphasis of identity and strength endears the book to the readers of young adulthood who will connect with characters who are struggling with fear, memory and self-identification. These themes are exaggerated by the boarding school setting, which reflects the isolation and emotional depth of the feelings that one can experience during adolescence.
Sanjana Kanamarlapudi creates a story that never requires graphic horror to create tension; instead, it is the atmosphere of immersion and psychological detail that evokes tension. The silence of the deserted corridors, the heaviness of unacknowledged memories, and Gwen reflective narration all help to create an atmosphere of unease that is not forgotten as soon as certain episodes are completed. The writing invites the reader to feel fear as an inner condition, a response to silence and uncertainty and to the unknown, rather than merely to external dangers. This method provides this novel with a reflective, near cinematic pace that stands out among most traditional thrillers.
What impressed me most about reading this novel was that it did not make me addicted to its reading by any loud scares or dramatic turns and twists, rather by quiet tension, by the emotional depth I felt in the story, it created a sense of unease that lingered with me long after I had read it. I became immersed in the inner world of Gwen, her confusion, fear and slow development as she attempted to come to terms with the unsettling turn of events taking place around her at the boarding school. Instead of being frightened by the book I was fascinated by the psychological aspects of it how fear may be internal, as an expression of silence and the memories we hold, not only of the shadows in the dark.
To sum up, it is a psychologically dense and emotionally charged thriller that extends past the outward scares and explores the fear, memory, and unresolved pain of carrying. The introspective mood, well-crafted character, and the setting make it a captivating read among those who like mysteries with more depth. This slow-build mood continued to make me turn the pages, and I particularly liked how the novel combines mystery with more serious elements of identity and resilience, so it felt to me not only like a thriller, but also a tale about finding oneself in the midst of uncertainty. Although it is a good page-turner, it is much more than that in the way it challenges the reader to consider their own inner worlds - which makes it a memorable edition to the modern YA fiction.
Sanjana Kanamarlapudi's 'A Cold Hold' got me into a story that defies easy genre labels, blending elements of psychological suspense, coming-of-age introspection, and emotional realism. The novel is not merely a mystery to be solved, but a layered exploration of fear, memory, identity, and resilience and it accomplishes this with surprising maturity and depth.
It almost surprised me how this novel is anchored by its evocative emotional core. The story follows Gwen Griswold, a teenage girl attending a boarding school where unsettling, inexplicable events begin to unfold. Kanamarlapudi carefully constructs an atmosphere where silence and memory are the true engines of tension.
What stayed with me most in A Cold Hold was how gently and honestly fear is handled. It isn’t presented as something meant to shock or startle, but as something quietly lived through. The fear in this novel doesn’t come charging at you; it lingers, asks questions, and waits. And in doing so, it read something deeply human, so much so, that the things that unsettle us most are often the ones we keep buried, the parts of ourselves we’re reluctant to face. It’s this inward, emotional tension that gives the story its lasting weight. The isolation and stillness of the school amplify every whisper, every sudden recollection, transforming the ordinary into the uncanny. The atmosphere is meticulously crafted.
Gwen’s journey is the emotional core of this story. She is complex, introspective, and palpably human. Her experiences the fear, the uncertainty, the courage it takes to face both literal and metaphorical shadows which are rendered with sincerity and subtlety. Gwen and Ezra’s relationship is defined by subtle chemistry, thoughtful banter, and quiet understanding. Their connection grows naturally through shared moments, gentle humour, and mutual respect rather than dramatic gestures. Ezra offers Gwen space and attention without trying to fix her, while Gwen feels seen and supported in his presence. Together, they bring warmth and emotional balance to the story, providing a steady, comforting contrast to its psychological tension. Kanamarlapudi’s writing is fluid and evocative without being overwhelming, balancing atmosphere with forward momentum. She amazed me at varied levels. The tension and built-up was so precisely written. The deliberate pacing allows tension to build naturally, while moments of introspection draw the reader closer to Gwen’s inner world. This depth elevates the novel beyond a standard psychological thriller, turning it into a reflective exploration of adolescence, trauma, and resilience.
A Cold Hold as a remarkable and mature work of psychological fiction. It transcends simple genre boundaries to offer a narrative that is at once suspenseful, introspective, and emotionally profound. Sanjana Kanamarlapudi demonstrates a refined understanding of fear as an emotional experience, using setting, character, and mood to explore how we come to terms with what we’ve hidden deep within ourselves.
🥀 If you're someone who loves BULBBUL with ghosts or trauma or sacrifice - then I'll not be surprised if you fall in love with this book too! Like BULBBUL, this book is set in a secluded atmospheric environment and uses “supernatural” elements as a metaphor for deep-seated psychological pain and social injustice. A strong female lead, a mysterious dark past and a gorgeous but haunting aesthetic “chilling yet human” tone that the author also aimed for in her book.
🥀 I found realism, memory, identity, fear and exploration of resilience at one point. It almost surprised me with coming-of-age elements here. It is like an onion - layers of exploration of thoughts and stories. Gwen Griswold, a teenage girl attending a boarding school where memories and silence play a tug-of-war. It is honest yet gentle. Gwen follows the voices. One day when she steps into an abandoned room to get her answers, she welcomes some unknown presence.
🥀 Forty years of abandonment - a teenager who lost his soul, tries to announce his presence to Gwen. It literally felt something unreal but surreal. She made a promise to find out about his murderer. To know about the person. No-one actually left understood like them. What is the next part here? Justice? Friendship? Or something else?
🥀 I don't want to give you any further information about twists and turns, rather I would like you to read this one. Gwen here eventually realizes that the only way to silence the “voices” is to confront the truths she has been suppressed. The ending shifts shifts from a mystery of who did it to a revelation of WHY we let trauma define us. It concludes on a note of bittersweet empowerment, suggesting that while we cannot change the past, we can change how much of it we carry into the future.
“Ever felt scared of something that isn’t real… only to realize it might be your own mind playing tricks on you?” This is exactly what happend with GWEN GRISWOLD. A COLD HOLD by Sanjana Kanamarlapudi is a psychological thriller book which revolves around the girl named GWEN who is suffering from Schizophrenia. The story sets in the eerie, quiet environment of a boarding school where GWEN begins experiencing strange and unsettling occurrences — mysterious voices in the dark and footsteps in empty hallways.
After gathering a lot of courage, Gwen finally decides it’s time to follow the voices and shadows, that’s being haunting her for days. One night, she decided to go an abandoned room where no one was allowed to go, just to get answers for all the things going around her. The moment she steps inside the abandoned room, it gives chills down her spine. Suddenly, she sense someone’s presence behind her. She could only feel it. There was a young teenage boy “EZRA NYX” whose presence could not be seen. And when he told Gwen about him, it literally didn’t seem real at first. He was murdered forty years ago. He didn’t got closure about his death and spirit can’t move on. Forty years of not finally moving on and trapped inside an abandoned bathroom, Gwen was his only hope left as she was the only one who could actually see him. She made a promise to him, to find out about his death but it wasn’t going to be that simple. There were challenges and someone was constantly lingering on them. Someone who was afraid to get caught after 40 years. But the story didn’t stop here.
Gwen always wanted someone to understand her. In a way, no one has ever understand her but Ezra did. He didn’t only understand her but actually gave her a reason to live her life happily. To actually tell her she matters. Even though, he is not real, but he did everything he can to make her feel real in this world where she got ignored by almost everyone. But all of it has to come to an end when the case is finally closed. When his spirit can finally come to peace. But will it?? Can Gwen solve this forty year old case or will her affection come in between??
The most terrifying thing is trusting your own mind then ghosts? You are the only one who can see Ghost?
A Cold hold is the gate to answer...
The story centers on Gwen a 16yr girl living with an issue of schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a state of brain disorder including delusions, false beliefs and doubts. She has a smart service dog called "Buddy". When Gwen wanders through a silent hallway in her boarding school and notices a locked bathroom sealed off, avoided, heavy with a silent “DO NOT ENTER” warning she expects nothing good to come from looking inside. But she looks anyway and that’s where she sees him.
So, enters A Boy figure who is seen but is sitting quietly. Actually he is not standing before her but is visible through reflections like the mirror, tiles where his image is fractured and repeating. That moment I was a bit moved. Gwen does what she’s been trained to do her entire life she assumes her mind is lying to her again. But when she looks at signals and moments by a buddy that he is looking at the same corner where she is looking SHE.....
The boy figure is Ezra who is a ghost to a decades old death that was never truly known. As some days go by their connection grows. When Gwen goes to her home Ezra follows her and is at home by shadow. Now, Gwen becomes more interested in uncovering what really happened on the day Ezra died especially when the official story never felt right.
One of the most intense moments while reading is when Gwen and Ezra sneak into a building late at night searching for old papers, records and the screams. The discovery in that building changed everything but is paused.. They found the hidden truth of what was the reason for the death & lab tragedy that were said to be an "accident" by authorities. This adds a whole new layer of truth, heartbreak and anger to the mystery. Gwen's only friend Amara is on vacation. What sets A Cold Hold apart is it handles mental health softly. By the end i was not scared but more absorbed.
I went in expecting something loud and ghost heavy. Instead, I found a deeply introspective psychological story that feels intimate and human. The book centers on Gwen, a teenager navigating schizophrenia, grief, and the constant uncertainty of her own perceptions. When strange events begin unfolding at her boarding school and she encounters Ezra, who claims he was murdered years ago, the line between reality and imagination begins to blur.
What makes the story powerful is that the fear never feels cheap. There are no dramatic jump scares meant only to shock. The tension builds slowly through silence, doubt, and emotional vulnerability. The boarding school setting plays a crucial role in shaping that atmosphere. The empty corridors, hushed conversations, and lingering shadows create a sense of isolation that mirrors Gwen’s internal state.
Gwen’s journey is not just about solving a mystery. It is about learning to trust herself in a world that questions her reality. Watching her wrestle with her thoughts, memories, and fears feels raw and honest. Her connection with Ezra grows through small, meaningful interactions rather than dramatic declarations. That gradual development makes their bond feel sincere and comforting despite the eerie circumstances.
The novel also treats mental health with care. Gwen is never reduced to her diagnosis. Instead, we see her resilience, intelligence, confusion, and strength. The story emphasizes that fear can come from within just as much as from external threats.
This is a slow burn novel that prioritizes emotional depth over high speed plotting. It invites you to read patiently and sit with the discomfort. By the end, it leaves you reflective rather than startled.
If you appreciate atmospheric psychological fiction that explores identity, memory, love, and inner strength, this is a book you should definitely pick up. It is haunting in a quiet and deeply human way.
❄️Gwen Griswold has been balancing her life at a boarding school while coping with schizophrenia and maintaining her routine. During an unavoidable circumstance, she explores an abandoned bathroom. Although she experiences something haunting there, she dismisses it as a hallucination, something she has faced before. However, when reality finally hits, she is deeply shaken.
❄️The encounter with the ghost and its appearance trigger Gwen’s mind to approach the shadow. Eventually, she uncovers the mystery behind the ghost, and solving the case becomes a turning point in her difficult life.
❄️The characters and plot development are well written, and the psychological aspects of Gwen’s condition are portrayed very smoothly. The author has done an excellent job of bringing mental health into the limelight through the story.
❄️First of all, I absolutely loved Buddy, the dog who stays with Gwen all the time, guarding her. The interaction between Gwen and Ezra feels very deep, and their bond is calm and quiet—a kind of stillness that lingers even after finishing the book. The approach to uncovering the mystery is interesting, as it blends investigative elements with bonding moments between the main characters and their family backgrounds.
❄️The suspense surrounding the mystery unfolds smoothly, though the reason behind Ezra’s murder could have been stronger. That said, the author beautifully depicts the life of a person living with such a condition and the support they need to carry on. The bond between Gwen and her grandmother, as well as her best friend Amara, makes the story feel warm and cozy.
❄️I thoroughly loved this book. It left me with a sense of stillness and sadness, but the ending was completely satisfying. ❄️The author has truly penned this story well—thank you for writing this gem.
“Some stories... aren't meant to be endless. But they're still worth telling."
Some books don't just tell a story , they unfold something that's been sitting to be seen. That's how mystery and love overlaps seamlessly in the book " A Cold hold " . The story follows a teenager, Gwen Griswold , navigating her world while diagnosed with schizophrenia. Her only trusted companion to guide her through her sanity is her cute pet buddy. While living in a boarding school, Gwen has been holding on well by herself .Till one day she starts feeling a cold sensation..strange Shapes start evaporating in her vision, confusing her with reality and hallucination...then she meets him. A boy in the mirror in the banned part of the dormitory. Ezra Nyx. She tries to unsee it . Ignore it. Till she starts seeing him everywhere. Ezra has a story to tell. And Gwen is the only one who can see and hear him. A mystery unfolds with love and longing as Ezra and Gwen team up to open the cold case of Ezra's murder that happened years back. Will Gwen be able to help Ezra.... When all she wants him is to stay with her?
The book has wonderfully blended the elements of love, friendship , mystery and Sadness that comes with loving someone meant to leave. Gwen's character comes out stronger as the story progresses, the romance here is painful at the same time beautiful. The ending made me stare at the wall for an hour while silently crying. But eventually, it is about letting go and doing what is right.
Overall, A suspenseful romance that will haunt you after you close the book , it will stay with you just like a wilted rose in a notebook. Bittersweet, nostalgic yet close to heart . If you love supernatural romances with mystery, then this is a great pick.
Some books try to frighten you with noise. This book does the opposite; it lowers its voice and somehow makes the silence heavier.
I went in expecting a typical haunted boarding school mystery. What I found instead was a slow-burning, emotionally layered story that lingers long after the final page. At the center is Gwen Griswold, a teenager grappling not just with strange occurrences in shadowed corridors, but with memories and doubts that feel far more unsettling than any ghost. The fear here isn’t dramatic or exaggerated. It’s quiet, patient, and deeply human.
The boarding school setting is written with such restraint that it almost becomes a character itself - empty hallways, dim lights, a stillness that feels watchful. There’s an unease woven into the atmosphere, but it never feels forced. Instead of jump scares, the story builds tension through Gwen’s internal conflict, her questioning of reality, her fragile sense of trust in her own mind, and her struggle to hold onto herself when everything feels uncertain.
What I appreciated most is the emotional depth. This isn’t just about mystery; it’s about resilience. Gwen’s confusion, vulnerability, and quiet courage feel real. The relationships are handled gently, adding warmth without disturbing the haunting calm of the narrative.
The writing is thoughtful and introspective, allowing pauses and silences to carry meaning. It’s not a fast-paced thriller, and it doesn’t try to be. It asks for patience, and rewards it.
This book stays with you not because it shouts, but because it presses softly against your thoughts. A haunting, reflective read that explores fear, memory, and the strength it takes to trust yourself again.
You have to read A Cold Hold by Sanjana Kanamarlapudi. I’m not even exaggerating, it genuinely surprised me in the best way.
I went in thinking it would be a typical haunted boarding school thriller, something dramatic and fast-paced. But it’s not loud like that at all. It’s quiet. Emotional. The kind of story that slowly wraps around you without you realizing it. It follows Gwen, a teenage girl who’s dealing with schizophrenia, grief, memory, and this constant doubt about her own reality. And when she starts seeing Ezra, a boy who claims he was murdered decades ago and you’re stuck wondering along with her: is this real, or is it her mind playing tricks again? That uncertainty is what makes it so powerful. The fear isn’t jump-scare scary. It’s soft, lingering, and painfully human.
What I loved most is how emotional it is. Gwen isn’t just facing a mystery, she’s facing herself. Her loneliness, her strength, her confusion. And somehow, even with the shadows and whispers, the story feels tender. The chemistry scenes with Ezra? Weirdly comforting. Her bond with her grandmother and even Buddy (yes, the dog!) add this warmth that balances the heaviness. It’s not a book you rush through. You sit with it. It feels like walking alone down a quiet hallway where your thoughts echo too loudly. And when it ends, it doesn’t leave you with noise, it leaves you with a feeling. If you like psychological stories that are emotional, introspective, a little haunting but deeply human, you would absolutely love this. It’s not just about ghosts. It’s about resilience, love, and learning to trust yourself when your own mind feels fragile.
Seriously. Read it. I need someone to talk about it with.
I picked up A Cold Hold thinking it would be a haunted boarding school story. It really isn't.
There is a locked door. There is a ghost in mirror. There is a mystery that needs to be solved. But above all, what really stayed with me was Gwen. A girl who is constantly dismissed because of her Schizophrenia, who is made to feel like her reality is always questionable, who is tired of feeling like her own home doesn't feel like home. The loneliness she carries felt more heavier than any of the paranormal moment in the book.
When Ezra appears, it confuses her. Ypu can feel the hesitation - is this real or not? But as the story goes on, their connection slowly becomes one of the most meaningful parts of the book... Their bond isn’t dramatic or exaggerated. It grows through shared purpose, quiet understanding & the feeling of finally being believed.
And I have to talk about Buddy!! In a story that feels tense & emotionally heavy, Buddy brings that small sense of comfort. He isn’t just a pet. His presence makes Gwen feel less alone
This book talks about schizophrenia & mental health without making Gwen feel like a "case". She feels like a person. And that matters. The suspense will keep you turning pages, but the emotions stay.
If you’re looking for jump scares, this isn’t that book. But, I want to recommend this if you like ●soft, slow-burn emotional connections ●psychological thrillers with heart ●boarding school settings with eerie vibes ●stories that talk about mental health in a sensitive way
I enjoyed reading this book. And honestly, knowing that the author, Sanjana, wrote something this layered & thoughtful at such a young age is very impressive 👏
Cold Hold is a simple mystery read and more like a love story I must say.
Gwen's parents sent her to a boarding school although she had schizophrenia. Buddy is her service dog who accompanies her everywhere. During spring break, everyone went home, and Gwen was left alone at school as Amara, her best friend, left her for the holidays too. It was during one of those days that she sneaked into the forbidden room when she was chased by her warden Mr.Thorn, for wandering late at night outside the dormitory.
That night something happened that she least expected. Resting in the forbidden room was Ezra Nyx, a 17-year-old boy who was declared dead 40 years ago. It was a ghost boy whom she met. She isn’t seeing things now. He was real. A real ghost boy who wanted her to solve his murder mystery as he couldn’t quite remember things. How will Gwen help Ezra when there is no possibility of anyone believing in her with an ailing condition?
Our young author, ensured that readers were drawn into the story. Although I felt it was a bit dragged out, I couldn’t ignore the love that blossomed within the mystery. With an immaculate attention to detail, she caught me awestruck. The elucidation of characters and their emotions is the best thing I liked about this book. I couldn't help but marvel at her diligent narration. It was not all about the mystery. It was also about the sense of belonging, the sense of being loved and acknowledged. It can quite make a 90min Netflix anime film according to me.
I very much commend the author for meticulously penning the story!
genuinely enjoyed reading A Cold Hold by Sanjana Kanamarlapudi. The way the author explores loneliness, mental health, and the quiet ache of feeling abandoned really touched me. Some emotions in this book feel painfully real especially the way it shows how isolating it can be when even your own family seems distant. The story introduces us to Gwen, who is living in a hostel room with her supportive friend Amara and her loyal pet dog. Gwen struggles with schizophrenia, which has already distanced her from most people in her life. Amara and her dog are the only constants she can rely on. Things take a darker turn when Gwen begins noticing a shadow in the corner of her room. At first, she assumes it’s just another hallucination. But when her dog reacts to it too, doubt begins to creep in. Is it really just her mind playing tricks on her? As the story progresses, Gwen discovers an abandoned room and encounters the silhouette of a mysterious boy. Terrified, she tries to ignore it but the figure keeps appearing, refusing to let her find peace. Slowly, she gathers the courage to confront him, and what unfolds is both shocking and emotional. The mystery of who the boy truly is whether he’s real or a product of her illness keeps the reader hooked until the end. Alongside the suspense, the author beautifully weaves in Gwen’s childhood trauma, the entry of a detective, and subtle threads of love and healing. Overall, this book is a blend of psychological tension, emotional depth, and mystery. It leaves you thinking long after you’ve finished the last page.
I opened A Cold Hold expecting a spooky boarding‑school tale, but it quickly became something far more intimate. The story’s locked door and mirror ghost set a chilling stage, yet the real weight comes from Gwen, a student whose schizophrenia makes everyone doubt her perception of reality. Her loneliness feels heavier than any supernatural threat, and that emotional core drives the narrative.
When Ezra appears, Gwen’s uncertainty is palpable—she questions whether he’s real or just another hallucination. Their relationship unfolds slowly, built on quiet understanding and the rare feeling of being truly believed. It’s a soft, slow‑burn connection that adds warmth without melodrama.
Buddy, her loyal pet, offers small moments of comfort, reminding us that companionship can ease even the darkest thoughts. The novel treats mental health with respect, presenting Gwen as a fully realized person rather than a case study.
The boarding school itself feels like a silent witness, its atmospheric corridors echoing memory and stillness. Mystery, romance, and psychological insight blend seamlessly, never overpowering one another. The pacing is deliberate, rewarding patience with a haunting, reflective tone.
If you enjoy atmospheric settings, nuanced characters, and a story that values emotional truth over cheap scares, A Cold Hold is worth your time. Sanjana’s youthful voice delivers a layered, thoughtful work that lingers long after the final page, leaving readers with a quiet yet powerful impression of hope and resilience.
You know a book was perfect when you feel like missing it even when you are reading it or when you need some time to accept the fact that it was a fictional work. And this book made me feel exactly that. Although the book is set in a fictional world, the characters felt close to my heart. The book explores murder, mystery, grief, friendships and emotional support. The tension can be felt in almost every chapters of the book and that has made the book more intriguing.
The story follows Gwen Griswold, in a boarding school with a condition called schizophrenia which is a severe mental disorder characterised by loss of contact with reality. And for that reason we can see Buddy, her pet dog being a constant companion for her. She hates chemistry and her best friend Amara is a best friend that is always there for her. And what awaits for her is really mesmerizing. The entire story is told in first person narrative of Gwen.
This wasn't a normal murder mystery book, or something that keeps you on the edge. But this book contains something special. Rather than making me anxious and tensed, it held me in a comforting way. It just shows how grief becomes a part of you. The writing style was also very comforting and simple. The story lingers in our heart long after we finish the book. If you are into emotional depth, mystery and more character paced stories, then this book works perfect for you.
I went into Cold Hold with simple curiosity, not really knowing what to expect, and it turned out to be a story that reveals itself slowly and thoughtfully. It isn’t driven by loud drama or fast-paced events, but by a quiet emotional depth that steadily draws you in. There’s a subtle, persistent uneasiness woven into the narrative that gives the book a haunting and reflective tone.
The story follows Gwen Griswold, and what stood out most was the way her inner thoughts and emotions were explored with such care. The boarding school setting feels deeply atmospheric almost like a silent witness to everything unfolding. It carries a sense of memory and stillness, adding weight to the emotional experience of the story.
I also appreciated how the novel blends elements of romance, mystery, and psychological exploration in a balanced way. None of these themes overpower the others; instead, they complement each other, creating a layered and emotionally rich narrative. The relationships feel nuanced, holding both warmth and an underlying sense of discomfort that keeps you engaged.
What makes this book especially impactful is its restraint. It doesn’t rush to explain everything, but instead allows emotions and meanings to surface naturally over time. It asks for patience from the reader and rewards it with a deeply immersive and lingering experience. Cold Hold is quiet yet powerful,a story that leaves behind a lasting emotional impression.
A GIRL WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA WHO CAN SEE GHOSTS OR IS IT ANOTHER OF HALLUCINATION? A COLD CASE, A GHOST FROM YEARS BACK NEEDING CLOSURE. FALLING IN LOVE Imagine you have a condition where you hallucinate people and are being treated for it but one fine day, you find a guy who says he died some 40 yrs ago! Would you trust yourself? This could be another hallucination right! Gwen felt the same too until her therapy dog cleared all her doubts and all three of them set on mission to find who killed the ghost boy aka EZRA NYX It was written very well, detailed , atmospheric expressive, so much that every dialogue has preface that actually became an inconvenience for me after a few pages because it somehow made me get detached from the characters. It was as if I’m being forced to understand those dialogues in only one way, but we do find more about Gwen during this whole book, about her mental condition and her family and how she has been treated as a child. it is very well researched and written in a very beautiful and subtle way without alarming or hurting any of the readers who is reading the book and that is really appreciable. certain scenes felt repetitive, but it is indeed a reading experience for the first time. The eerie background of the boarding School the closed corridors, the snowy/fall climate that is set in the background. Everything is perfectly placed. A murder mystery yes, but it is definitely more than what you think it would be.
Cold Hold by Sanjana Kanamarlapudi ⭐ 4.25/5 First of all — a teenage author, and this is her 9th or 10th book? That itself deserves appreciation. Truly impressive. A Cold Hold is a fast-paced thriller blended with subtle paranormal elements. The plot is decent, engaging, and carries a gentle twist that unfolds naturally rather than dramatically. The writing is smooth and unbroken — the kind that makes the pages turn quickly without feeling forced. Honestly, the book just flew. The story revolves around Gwen, a girl struggling with schizophrenia, isolation, and the feeling of being out of place in her own world. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she becomes entangled with Ezra Nyx — a boy who once radiated joy but died mysteriously on their campus years ago. What follows is not just a ghost story, but a layered unraveling of truth. The narrative flows seamlessly from one event to another as Gwen begins to piece together what really happened to Ezra. Along the way, a quiet bond forms between them — fragile, emotional, and slightly haunting in its own way. The final farewell carries a softness that lingers. If you want to know what truly happened to Ezra Nyx, how Gwen finds clarity amidst her own struggles, and who was responsible for his death — you’ll have to read and find out. It’s a simple, easy read that can be finished in 2–3 days. A light thriller with emotional undertones. Give it a try. You might enjoy the subtle chill it leaves behind.
There are psychological thrillers that rely on shocking twists, and then there are those that unsettle you quietly, working beneath the surface. A Cold Hold firmly belongs to the latter category.
Set within the isolated walls of a boarding school, the novel follows Gwen Griswold, a teenager living with schizophrenia who begins experiencing unsettling events voices echoing in empty corridors, unexplained footsteps, and ultimately the presence of Ezra Nyx, a boy who claims he was murdered forty years ago. From that point forward, the story carefully blurs the line between psychological fragility and supernatural possibility. What makes this novel compelling is not just the mystery surrounding Ezra’s death, but the emotional and mental tension that drives Gwen’s perspective. The narrative places readers directly inside her uncertainty. At every turn, we are forced to question what is real and what might be a projection of her mind. That ambiguity becomes the novel’s greatest strength.
The boarding school setting enhances this tension beautifully. The long hallways, abandoned rooms, and heavy silence create an atmosphere that feels claustrophobic without being exaggerated. The author doesn’t rush the story. Instead, she allows discomfort to linger. Scenes unfold slowly, almost deliberately, reinforcing the theme that time in this story does not pass easily - it presses.
"A Cold Hold" by Sanjana kanamarlapudi is a psychological thriller like no other, a concept so unique that you remain in awe of it. I love how brilliantly the author has wooven around this story and I love how she builds up the protagonist's character, showcasing that despite being mentally challenged she has what it takes to get through life. Unlike any other typical thriller books where the mentally challenged one is always the predator, the author portrayed the protagonist in a new light which for a change is very interesting to read. When the lines between her hallucinations and reality blurred, her support dog was there to clarify it for her but who was it she thought she was hallucinating?
An unsolved murder, a cold case closed and abandoned, that same building, the same boarding school, the same people who worked there, who was the killer and why was the ghost that appeared killed? Why did he choose her to solve his murder and what happens when they fall for each other? What happens when the murder is solved? Would the ghost be able to stay on or will the ghost of him be imprinted on her forever as only a vague memory?
Kuddos to the author for this concept, it was quite a refreshing read for sure. For those who love thrillers, horror and a bit of romance, this book is the perfect blend of it all.
A Cold Hold is not the kind of thriller that shocks you with loud twists. It unfolds slowly, focusing more on emotional tension than dramatic scares.
The story follows Gwen, a teenage girl living with schizophrenia at a boarding school where an old murder still lingers in whispers. When she begins seeing and hearing things again, she isn’t sure whether it’s her illness — or something real this time. That uncertainty creates the true suspense of the novel.
What I appreciated most was the portrayal of Gwen. She isn’t shown as dangerous or unstable in a dramatic way. She’s vulnerable, thoughtful, and trying her best. Her internal struggles feel human. The author handles her condition with care rather than turning it into a stereotype.
The mystery element is steady and atmospheric rather than intense. If you’re expecting heavy horror or complex investigative twists, this might feel lighter. But if you enjoy emotional storytelling with psychological layers and a soft romantic undertone, this book delivers that beautifully.
The connection between Gwen and Ezra adds an unusual but tender dimension to the story. Their relationship feels quiet and restrained rather than exaggerated.
Overall, A Cold Hold is a reflective psychological mystery that focuses more on healing and memory than fear. It’s best suited for readers who enjoy slow-burn emotional tension.
A Cold Hold by Sanjana Kanamarlapudi is an emotional yet haunting psychological thriller.
This story revolves around Gwen a 16 year old girl who is diagnosed with Schizophrenia. It's a disorder where one has delusions and doubts. She has a strong character who is handling everything together with her boarding school life. But in all the chaos her service dog Buddy is her companion.
One day when Gwen was exploring around the campus she discovered an abandoned bathroom. That's when everything changed. She senses something different, some hallucinations but she ignored it because it was something she had encountered before. That's when Gwen sees Ezra in the reflections. Ezra told her about his story. How he was murdered forty years ago. But all that seemed unreal.
I loved how both of their relationship escalated so naturally and how they went with the flow. Loved how the author has portrayed their chemistry. Their banter was so adorable. The way Ezra became her safe space. He understood her in ways no one ever could. That was the one thing Gwen needed the most.
Now the question is can Gwen really solve this murder mystery of 40 years ago. You have to give this amazing story a chance to know how it unfolds. It will keep you hooked to the last page. This suspenseful thriller can be your next obsession!!!
First, I really relate to some of the feelings the author penned down about depression and how it hurts to be left alone. How painful it is when we are left alone and hard to accept when the family turns back to us.
The book begins with the intro about Gwen, who was sound asleep and had been accompanied by a dog with her. Her friend Amara is sharing a hostel room with her, and she is a very good friend of hers.
Gwen was suffering from schizophrenia, and because of that, she has no friends apart from Amara and her pet dog. On one fine day, she was able to see a shadow in the corner of the room and thought to herself it was her hallucination. But when her pet reacted to it, she felt something was weird. One led to another; she happened to visit an abandoned room and found a silhouette of a boy. She was scared and left the place in a hurry.
But the silhouette of the boy never let her live in ease and appeared wherever she went. She gathered courage and tried to interact with the boy and found a shocking truth behind him.
Who is that boy? Why is he following Gwen? Is he real or just a hallucination? Was the rest of the story.
Apart from this, the childhood trauma, detective entry, and love of Gwen were beautifully written.
I love you like snow misses the fall. :) Happy reading!
𝐐𝐮𝐨𝐭𝐞: "I but down on the sob threatening to escape, my voice breaking as I forced the words out: 'I love you like snow misses fall.' "

A Cold Hold by Sanjana Kanamarlapudi is not your typical story - and that’s exactly what makes it unforgettable.
At first glance, it feels like a haunting set within the quiet walls of a boarding school. The whispers, the echoes, the unsettling stillness, they all create an atmosphere that gently creeps under your skin. But as the story unfolds, you realize the real ghosts aren’t the ones lurking in corridors. They are the memories we bury, the grief we carry, and the truths we are afraid to face.
Gwen Griswold’s journey feels deeply personal and emotionally raw. The writing leans into psychology and vulnerability rather than cheap thrills, making the story more intimate than frightening. There’s a softness beneath the suspense, a reminder that sometimes holding on hurts more than letting go.
What I appreciated most is how the author blends mystery with emotional depth. It’s haunting, yes, but also tender and reflective. The narrative explores loss, resilience, and the quiet strength it takes to confront your own shadows.
If you enjoy stories that focus more on inner battles than external horror, this one will stay with you long after you turn the last page.
To describe it in one line: I totally loved reading this book - every minute I spent with it was absolutely worth it💙
Our Young protagonist, Gwen Griswold's life takes a turn when she starts to see someone. A silhouette at first and then she knew for sure there's something supernatural following her. But who would believe her? Everyone would blame it on her schizophrenia. She could feel that emotional distance from the world around her. Imagine hearing voices all the time and that feeling of someone watching your every move. But there's more to this voices...an age old murder case is buried deep within her school premises and she is determined to uncover it with every last bit of her sanity.
Review :
I loved the writing style, it's commendable. The language is simple, understable land beginner friendly and the description creates a vivid image in reader's mind. It feels like I'm right there with Gwen, can sense the shift in atmosphere, that eerie feeling and that unsettling feeling of someone watching me.
Gwen's character makes this book more interesting, while solving a mystery she's also fighting a silent battle with her own mind. It's twisted and keeps the readers hooked till the last page.
Overall this book perfectly blends mystery and emotional insights. A haunting exploration of fear and identity. Pick this book up and share your thoughts with me in thEe DM!
It centers on sixteen-year-old Gwen Griswold, who attends a secluded boarding school where an unresolved murder case lurks in the background. Strange things begin to occur: voices that seem too real, footsteps reverberating down empty hallways, murmurs in vacant rooms. But the true struggle for Gwen is believing her own thoughts because she suffers from schizophrenia. Is that a ghost? Resurfacing trauma? Or something darker on the inside?
She is deeply human, multifaceted, and reflective. She encounters the anxiety, uncertainty, and bravery required to confront both real and figurative shadows, which are depicted with nuance and sincerity. The relationship between Gwen and Ezra is characterised by quiet understanding, intellectual banter, and subtle chemistry.
In this book, terror waits, lingers, and asks questions rather than rushing at you. And in doing so, it revealed something really human, so much so that the aspects of ourselves we are unwilling to confront and the things that disturb us the most are frequently the ones we keep hidden. The story's enduring weight comes from this internal, emotional strain.
Every whisper and unexpected memory is amplified by the quiet and seclusion of the school, turning the commonplace into the eerie. The ambiance is painstakingly created.
I went into this story expecting a chilling, ghost-filled mystery. Instead, I found something far more personal and quietly powerful.
At its heart, the novel centers on Gwen — a young girl struggling to believe in her own perception while the world around her constantly questions it. The boarding school backdrop creates a soft, unsettling hush, where even the smallest moments feel loaded with meaning. But what truly stands out isn’t the supernatural thread — it’s Gwen’s inner world. Her doubts, her careful thoughts, the way she tries to steady herself — all of it feels deeply real. Her isolation isn’t exaggerated; it’s tender and painfully authentic.
The bond between Gwen and Ezra is one of the story’s gentlest strengths. Their connection doesn’t rush; it unfolds in quiet exchanges, shared vulnerability, and the comfort of finally feeling seen. And then there’s Buddy — the steady, loving presence that brings warmth to the narrative, offering light in moments that might otherwise feel too heavy.
This isn’t a book that relies on shock or spectacle. The tension is internal — rooted in memory, uncertainty, and the quiet courage it takes to keep going. If you’re drawn to slow-burn, atmospheric reads that explore emotion more than horror, A Cold Hold is a story that stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page.
