Brenda K. Davies is one of my auto-buy authors, and she seriously never disappoints. I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump lately, starting and abandoning book after book, and then I randomly stumbled across this one on my Kindle. And THANK GOD I did.
I usually try to wait until more than one book in a series is out before starting because I have absolutely no patience when it comes to cliffhangers, but guys… DO NOT WAIT FOR BOOK 2. This book is crazy good, and book 2 comes out at the end of the month, so there is really no excuse.
When Roses Burn is a unique, dark retelling of Beauty and the Beast with shifters, sorceresses, and all kinds of magical creatures. We start with an innocent childhood friendship between Seth, a young shifter, and Briar, a sorceress, that eventually turns into first love—and then absolutely destroys them both. And when I say things go horribly wrong, I mean H O R R I B L Y wrong. If you’re sensitive to certain topics, definitely check the trigger warnings before going in.
Fast-forward a decade, and Briar is abducted by Knox, which kicks off what I’m assuming is going to be a second-chance romance…although calling it a romance at this point feels generous. 😂 Their reunion is basically:
I hate you.
No, I don’t.
Yes, I do.
You betrayed me.
But I still want you.
But you’re an asshole.
But you’re also ridiculously hot.
But I absolutely cannot trust you.
But maybe I still love you.
BUT YOU’RE MY CAPTOR.
So basically, they’re somewhere around the hate-almost-fucking stage of their relationship, with a healthy dose of I should hate you, but I don’t, but I have to keep telling myself I do because I can’t let myself believe you didn’t betray me and risk getting hurt again, and I love the man you used to be even though this version of you is a complete dick and unfortunately still incredibly hot thrown in for good measure.
And honestly? I am HERE FOR IT.
The tension, the magic, the angst, the betrayal, the morally questionable characters, and the absolute mess that is Briar and Knox had me hooked. I flew through this book after struggling to finish anything for days.
I NEED book 2 immediately because there is no way I’m supposed to sit here and pretend I’m emotionally stable after that ending. Brenda K. Davies has done it again. ❤️🔥
