This is a fun story. Joanna is the daughter of a viscount, but their family has fallen on hardship due to her father being a terrible gambler. Joanna had one season a few years ago but has hardly been seen in society since. She is close friends with Lady Penelope. Penelope’s parents are desperate for Penelope to marry so accept any dates offered by eligible gentleman. Duke Evan is being hounded by his grandmother to seek a wife and she arranges a date with Lady Penelope - the first on a list of eligible ladies the grandmother has devised. Lady Penelope doesn’t want to meet the notorious Duke of Ice so begs Joanna to go in her stead, encouraging her to be so awful that it will end any potential attachment. Joanna reluctantly agrees. It is highly entertaining to read her be rude, inappropriate and unladylike but Evan is intrigued and amused by her lack of fear of him and wants to see her again. The duke falls first but resists as he has never wanted to marry. He is a control freak underpinned by fear - the genus of which we slowly learn about. Obviously it is a love story but it also demonstrates how cruel and destructive the gossip of society can be. We see the internal struggles of our main characters as they fight their pasts, shame, false impressions, duty, honour and love before they find their HEA.
Overall it’s an enjoyable read and starts in a wonderful way but it’s a bit of a roller coaster in the middle third, where at points I was losing interest, but keep reading as you get gems before the final third is fantastically paced and utterly keeps your interest.
I was generously gifted a copy this book from the author and freely offer this review.
