Sinister Returns

Rate this book
A new town is just what the doctor ordered.

When injury-prone librarian Charlotte Whitmore sprains her wrist on fuzzy pink handcuffs, she’s forced to deal with one of her greatest annoyances—doctors—in the form of Dr. Sawyer Thorne. And when he happens to rent the house next door a few weeks later, there’s no escaping the sparks between them, even if she can’t stand his profession.

Sawyer Thorne never quite lives up to his parents’ expectations, so leaving the hospital that’s his father’s domain for a new job in a new town gives him the chance of a lifetime—an escape from the past. And getting to know the mysterious woman from the emergency room who lives next door is icing on the cake.

But when Charlotte starts digging into a series of suspicious fires throughout town, someone else takes notice of her investigation.

Someone who will do anything to make sure those secrets stay buried.

eARC review - Thank you, Rachel, for the advanced read.

This is book 6 in the Spruce Hill series but was great as a standalone! If you like a meet-cute, some spice, an accident prone librarian, a hot doc, the closeness of a small-town and chosen family, and a HEA with a bit of mystery and suspense thrown in, along with some pups, then this read is for you!

Charlotte lives up to all the librarian stereotypes- clumsy, wants to research things that pique her interest, wears cute book-themed dresses, but is not afraid to tell you what she wants in the bedroom. Sawyer lives up to all the MMC energy that gives you unrealistic expectations in your own partner. Sweet, caring, reads people well and knows exactly when to give space or physical touch. Not to mention, nicknamed Dr. Hottie and with blue eyes and golden hair, he's definitely my new book crush.

Their story draws you in as fate (or a sneaky mutual acquaintance) brings them together multiple times that you forget this is also a suspense until it pops up. I didn't have a clue who the suspect was and was surprised when I found out. Then I was feeling let down by the quickness of it, but Rachel got me again as it continued on! It did not disappoint!

Definitely a solid 4 star read for me, and already planning to go back and read books 1-5 now!

Great book! 📕 I think Sawyer might be my favourite MMC of the Spruce Hill books I’ve read. He is just so darn genuine and loving and he’s a natural caregiver. He’s per much perfection wrapped in a sexy doctors coat. I liked Charlotte, I loved her passion for knowledge and her unrelenting curiosity. The fact that she’s a librarian made me love her even more.
I found this story was a bit on the tame side as far as Rachel’s previous romantic suspense novels. I didn’t get caught up in the build up like I have before. Still a beautiful love story and was fun to see some familiar names.
Solid 4 ⭐️. Thanks to Rachel for the eArc.

I love the Spruce Hill series! I love the town and reading the stories - you feel like you could be there. It’s so well written!

Recognizing characters other than the Mc’s is always fun! The found family aspects and the love stories Rachel threads are so much fun to read!

I love that Charlotte was a librarian! If I didn’t work in healthcare, this would be for me! My dream job (if I didn’t have to work to live) would be owning a bookstore 💗

Sawyer was also somewhat relatable being a doctor - he’s such a natural caregiver and just seems so loving! He’s one of my favorite MMC’s in the series.

This book was a little more pg than her other books I feel like but it didn’t take away from their story! Can’t wait to see what comes next. Thank you Rachel for the early read! All opinions are my own.

4.5 glowing stars! ⭐️
I loved diving into another ARC from Rachel Fitzjames — she makes Spruce Hill feel like a place I could genuinely live in. The friendships in this story are so heartfelt and loyal that they blur into family, and that’s something Rachel writes better than almost anyone. I’m completely invested in the love stories she builds, and this one had me turning pages way too late at night.

My only (very small!) hesitation was the use of the word “angel,” which just isn’t a term I personally vibe with. But honestly, that’s such a minor thing in an otherwise beautifully written, emotionally rich book. I can’t wait for whatever she writes next.

This book was a delightful surprise! I was immediatly drawn in by the charming yet mysterious atmosphere of Spruce Hill and the instant connection between the two main characters.

Set in the small town of Spruce Hill, this story follows Sawyer, a docter who has just moved to town for a fresh start, and Charlotte, the local librarian. It's the perfect bled of Contemporary romance and Romantic Suspense, with plenty of 'small-town charm' and a little 'hidden pasts' to keep you engaged.

What I loved
- Characters: I really connected with Sawer and Charlotte. Their developing relationship felt very natural, and I loved seeing a doctor trying tot find his footing in a tight-knit community full of lovely side characters.
- Writing Style: The prose is smooth and easy to read. I appreciated how the author took the time to build the romantic tension before diving into the darker elements.
- Series: Even though this is the 6th book in the series, it words perfectly as a standalone. I never felt lost, but it definitely made me curious about the previous stories in this world!

Points for Consideration
- Pacing: The first half of the book is very heavily focused on the romance. The real suspense and 'sinister' elements don't truly kick in until the second half. If you're looking for thrills from page one, you'll need a little patience for the buildup.
- Development: Once the tension started rising in the latter half, I couldn't put it down! It turned into a real page-turner.

Final Verdict & Recommendation
Overall, a solid 4.5-star read (rounded up to 5). It's a wonderful entry point into the Spruce Hill world. I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves a good small-town romance with a dark twist. I'll definitely be looking out for the other books in this series!

Charlotte hates doctors with a passion, so the emergency room is the last place she wants to be. Though even she has to admit Dr. Sawyer Thorne is easy on the eyes.. Imagine her surprise when she finds out he's her new next door neighbor.

Sawyer is excited to get started on his new position at the clinic in the small town of Spruce Hills. Even better, the woman who captured his interest one of his last nights in the hospital emergency room is now his neighbor.

The reason for Charlotte's visit to the emergency room is a little off the wall, but it is attention getting and leads to an interesting meet cute. Charlotte intrigues Sawyer, and despite her antagonism toward his profession, and maybe because of it, he wants to get to know her better. He's determined and patient, ready to break through Charlotte's hard outer shell to the woman hiding inside.

Witty, often humorous, dialogue between Charlotte and Sawyer keeps the story interesting. While the mystery behind the danger stalking Charlotte is telegraphed early, the reveal of the guilty party came as a surprise. The development of the relationship is well crafted and moves at a steady pace. Add in the eclectic and some eccentric personalities of the supporting characters, and this is a an enjoyable read with the perfect combination of suspense, danger and hint of spice.

Thanks to the author for a copy of this book. The thought and opinions are my own.

Charlotte Whitmore is an accident prone gal who is accident prone as hell . Boy she’s clumsy but not mumsy ,though cute and astute. Hold the phone ,cos when she ends up with a furry handcuff emergency she is met with flippancy…Well his bedside manner was off the cuff excuse the pun , though there was much fun as he’s hot is this one. A new doctor in town who doesn’t make her frown. No and there’s a spark you see,it’s just doctors she is hung up on and doesn’t find fun …until he.

A thorn in her side not at all and then a few weeks later Dr. Sawyer Thorne by her side does reside.. They’ll have a ball I’m sure cos she’s anything but demure. If you know what I mean. And Dr. Thorne is feeling right at home.

Erstwhile there’s something amiss that doesn’t make her smile but grimace something sinister ,what is this ? Suspicious fires throughout town make her frown and she is hell bent on getting to the bottom of this. Risky business as per. Intense

And what about this pair ? Do they go all the way to an happy ever after ,or at least stay good friends? Make amends with his rents does he ? Well he moved out hastily .

I’m giving Sinister Returns by Rachel Fitzjames a solid 4 stars!

I usually gravitate toward romantasy, fantasy, and dark romance, so picking up a small-town romance/suspense was a bit of a change of pace for me — but I’m so glad I did. From the very beginning, this story pulled me in, and I genuinely didn’t want to put it down.

The small-town atmosphere mixed with the suspense elements kept the tension steady without overshadowing the romance. I especially loved both Sawyer and Charlotte as characters. They felt well-developed, relatable, and emotionally layered. Watching their relationship unfold and naturally develop throughout the story was one of my favorite parts. The way their connection built over time made the romance feel authentic.

Overall, this was an engaging, well-paced read that surprised me in the best way. If you’re looking for a romance with a touch of suspense and strong character development that feels real, this one is definitely worth picking up!

Thank you so much Rachel for the eARC!

i knew i’d enjoy this book based on the dedication… it was a small town suspense romance taking place in the fictional town of Spruce Hill. it involves local librarian Charlotte and new in town doctor Sawyer, some 4 legged puppy friends and some entertaining side characters. i really enjoyed the suspense plot and it had me guessing until the end. it was a tad insta lovey and it had a mild third act break up which typically isn’t my favorite but i think they were done really well! the book was mild/ moderate spicy, lots of swoony behavior from our male MC, typical small town charm and all wrapped up nicely in the end. thank you Rachel for the early ARC and i look forward to reading the rest of the series!

This may have been my favorite book in this Spruce Hill series that I have read so far! Charlotte was a no nonsense librarian and she hates doctors. She, of course, ends up at the ER where she meets Dr. Sawyer Thorne. Her apprehension for this doctor quickly fades away when she realizes how hot he is. He’s smitten with her too but neither of them jump on exchanging information. Lucky for both of them he ends up being her neighbor! I loved how this story progressed. Their relationship went slow but not overly slow. There was the perfect amount of spice. The mystery in this was chef’s kiss as well. I didn’t see the Who dun-nit coming. I’m truly loving how Rachel puts these stories together! I cannot wait to keep reading about this town!

This was such an engaging mix of small-town romance and suspense. I loved how Sawyer and Charlotte, kept crossing paths in the most unexpected ways. Their chemistry was instant, but what made it even better was how natural their relationship felt as it developed, sweet and awkward.

The romance was definitely the heart of the story, but the suspense element added a great layer of tension. The mysterious fires and the danger lurking in the background kept me turning pages.

Charlotte was a fun heroine, clumsy, curious, and endearing and Sawyer was the perfect balance to her, steady and protective. Their banter made me smile.

I also enjoyed the small-town setting as always with Spruce Hill.

ARC given in exchange for honest review.

This is my first trip to Spruce Hill although it’s book 6 of the series. You can read it as a standalone, as I did.

I enjoyed this small town, romance novel about a clumsy librarian and a doctor looking for a change while finding a bit of serendipity. The added elements of suspense keep it even more engaging. It has a good, quick pace. It has endearing characters, found family, and plenty of spice.

I look forward to reading more in the series.

I am finding myself really looking forward to each release of this series. I love Rachel’s writing style and the world she has created. Also you can read each book as a standalone book which is another plus. Charlotte is a wonderful FMC. I liked her a lot. I liked her independence and the fact that she was a librarian.
The way Sawyer wanted to show his feelings without shouting it from the rooftops but by just fixing simple things in her home made me fall in love with him just a little bit.

I loved that this was a romance with spice and a mystery woven in — such a fun combo. And honestly, who doesn’t love a book that includes foster puppies?
Overall, this was a great read! I personally would’ve loved a bit more of a slow burn because they jumped into the spicy stuff pretty quickly. I also wouldn’t have minded a little more drama… but that may just be a personal issue of mine lol.
The chemistry was definitely there, and the mystery kept things interesting.

Rachel Fitzjames’s Sinister Returns, book six in the Spruce Hill series, is a mix of romance and small-town mystery with just enough suspense to keep things interesting.

The story follows Charlotte Whitmore, a librarian who somehow always seems to find herself in slightly chaotic situations. She’s independent, a little stubborn, and not exactly a fan of doctors—which makes her first meeting with Dr. Sawyer Thorne even more memorable. Their dynamic starts off with tension, but it quickly turns into something more layered as they keep crossing paths.

Sawyer is trying to start over in a new town, stepping away from expectations that have followed him for years. That backstory adds depth to his character and helps explain why he’s drawn to a quieter life—and to Charlotte. He’s steady, patient, and a good balance to Charlotte’s more guarded personality.

The romance between them builds naturally. It doesn’t feel rushed, and it’s driven more by their interactions than big dramatic moments. Living next door to each other adds to that, giving them plenty of opportunities to connect, clash, and slowly get to know one another.

Alongside the romance is a mystery involving a series of suspicious fires in town. Charlotte’s curiosity pulls her into the investigation, and that’s where the story starts to shift. What begins as something she’s simply interested in turns into something more serious as it becomes clear that someone doesn’t want the truth uncovered.

The mystery adds a nice layer of tension without taking over the story. It’s easy to follow, and the stakes gradually build as Charlotte gets deeper into it. The idea that someone is watching and willing to act to keep things hidden keeps the suspense steady.

The pacing is balanced between the romance and the mystery. Neither one feels rushed or ignored, which helps the story flow smoothly. There’s always something moving the story forward, whether it’s a clue, a conversation, or a shift in the relationship.

The writing style is simple and easy to read, making it a comfortable, engaging book. The dialogue feels natural, and the small-town setting adds a cozy feel, even with the darker elements in the background.

What stands out most is the combination of light romance and underlying danger. It keeps the story from feeling too predictable while still staying true to the cozy tone of the series.

If you enjoy stories that mix romance with a bit of mystery, this is a good fit. It has a similar feel to Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score and The Body in the Garden by Katharine Schellman.

Final Thoughts:
Sinister Returns is a solid mix of romance and mystery with characters that are easy to like and a story that keeps you interested. It’s an easy read with just enough suspense to keep things from feeling too light.

⭐️⭐️⭐️️⭐️/ ️🌶️🌶️🌶️

The Spruce Hills series consistently balances romance and suspense to provide a story that is easy to devour. In book 6 of the series, Sinister Returns, once again showcases Rachel Fitzjames’ talent for bringing this small town to life through her books. The small town is a character itself, growing with each book, revealing more each book.

Charlotte and Sawyer are pure joy in this story. They were both easy to connect with, their chemistry is amazing, and their romance is fire. What starts out as an unforeseen doctor’s visit quickly turns into witty banter, heated glances, and electric spice. It’s not hate to love, more like an unwanted attraction to love. When Charlotte’s curiosity in some suspicious fires starts getting unwanted threats and hostility, Sawyer doesn’t hesitate to help keep her safe.

As the book beautifully weaves their story, it also welcomes you back to a familiar town. Every book brings more of this small town to light and enlarges the picture. As Sawyer is new to town I really enjoyed getting to know the town through his eyes. Rachel has created a wonderful place that I always look forward to visiting.

As one of the few suspense romance authors that I read, Rachel never disappoints. I know this series is coming to end soon, I am excited to read how she closes out this chapter in her career. If you are wondering if suspense romance is for you, Rachel is a great author to start with. I am not even thinking about the suspense most of the time as I am entranced in the romance. Come fall in love with Spruce Hills, you’ll never want to leave.

As always, review any author notes before reading.

At least 7 nicknames, and an FMC that everyone loves enough to keep adding nicknames to the list? Yes please, count me in! I absolutely adore Spruce Hill, and every time I finish a new book in this town, I'm already ready to dive back in.

This series has so much going for it - sweet romances that you can't get over, couples who always end up so down bad for each other if they don't start out there immediately, and a suspense element that keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what's going to happen next and trying to find out who-dun-it. With this book specifically, we have an injury prone librarian (Ehlers-Danlos potentially, but yay obnoxious doctors, so unconfirmed) and Dr. Hottie (just in case you wanted another nickname) who have the absolute best chemistry. And for your suspense? Let's add in a touch of arson. If that isn't enough for you, toss in a couple of absolutely adorable pups for good measure!

So if anyone needs me - I'll now be over here in the corner pining for my town until I'm allowed to come back for a new mystery!

Thank you Rachel for the ARC <3

I really love how the book hooks you immediately from the start. I haven’t read books 1–5 in this series, but this one is a really good standalone book!

This is such an easy book to read. Although I might have to add that it’s quite fast-paced in the way the story unfolds, the characters are lovable enough to make you stay with the story.

Now Sawyer Throne, the man you are <3 He is my man <3 I would definitely feel really safe with him. Such a great and loving character. I love how he takes such good care of Charlotte. But for Charlotte, I’m not so sure. I do love her, but I find that her character is kind of inconsistent. Which isn’t that bad, since it didn’t bother me that much. I would love it if we could explore more of her trauma and past.

The suspense is alright. I definitely didn’t expect that guy to be the main villain. It was such a good and engaging twist.

Overall, it is a good and enjoyable book. Charlotte and Sawyer are definitely meant for each other. On a side note, I do wish it had a little more slow burn.

This series is one of my absolute favorites and it just keeps getting better! I love love love Charlotte and Sawyer.

Their first encounter had me chuckling. Charlotte ends up hurting herself in a very…interesting way and finds herself in the office of Dr. Thorne. While she’s waiting for him to arrive, he overhears her talking on the phone complaining about waiting on the goddam doctor. He walk in and says, "I'm the goddamn doctor, though most patients just call me Dr. Thorne.”😂 Sawyer (Dr. Thorne) moves to Spruce Hill for a fresh start. He accepts a job at the clinic in the small town and to his delight surprise he discovers that his new neighbor is non other than the woman with the mystery sprain that he couldn’t get out of his head. I love their awkward encounters and how smitten they both are with each other and the added suspense makes it that much better!

Oh, the chemistry between Charlotte and Sawyer. Sawyer is the ultimate cinnamon roll. He always has Charlotte’s best interest. He is mature enough to know what he wants and doesn’t want from his family and his relationships. Charlotte is the librarian that loves her job, has a great supportive group of friends, and loves dogs and Sawyer too.
The mix of romance and suspense was great and the mystery was not obvious. In fact, the person responsible for the fires was shocking.
If you enjoy small town romance with a side of suspense you will love this steamy romance!

We've got a meet-cute, but with sass. They have a sweet story. The suspense in this one was a low simmer with a couple peaks until the near end. I loved how everyone had a different nickname for Charlotte, and not just one, but they usually had multiples.
