I rated this 5 stars. Mainly because it was amazing to me. The Author Howard Murry started his life as Howard Murray Dumbell my third cousin once removed. As he became a popular local artist near Boone, N.C. , he changed his name legally to Howard Murry. Could you blame him with a name like "Dumbell"? Not sure how it was pronounced but the spelling alone probably gave way to a lot of teasing.
Quoting from the book jacket: "that painters , like cows, go dry: that when such periods as a artist come to him, he substitutes the typewriter for the brush. Thus, while painting in the mountains, he listened to strangers, acquaintances and friends, who told him the stories recounted here. The book is illustrated with some of his paintings of the magnificent mountain scenery."
I remember as a child my grandmother lived next door with different aunts. He house was large with a huge wrap around porch. I remember especially on Sundays people and family from all over would "visit", reminisce, swap stories while the children played. I wish I had stayed on the porch and listened more. Perhaps I could write a book.
This book shows one thing. The art of talking, telling stories , visiting people has become a lost art. We have replaced it with facebook, twitter and other social media. This book shows that we are missing out on a valuable part of life.
My great uncle wrote this book and I am finally reading it. I love that many humorous family stories have been recorded as well as many of his wonderful water color paintings.
