Eadartha is rotting from the inside out.

Sorcha is a druid ranger sworn to guard the Veil, the shifting boundary that protects her realm from the creatures that lurk beyond it. When a cloaked figure whispers her name, the Veil begins to tear. Monsters slip through the cracks, spirits stalk the woods, ancient gods stir awake, and Sorcha’s runes flare with a power she never wanted.

The Druid Council offers no answers. The forests offer only warnings. And the Dark Druid’s shadow grows stronger with every passing night.

With Samhain approaching and the realm unraveling, Sorcha begins to search for truth hidden in forbidden magic and forgotten myths. Loyal Kyron stands at her side, and a chaotic Cait Sídhe guides her through riddles, lore, and half-truths. Every path leads her closer to the one place no one dares to go.

At the edge of the Veil, one choice enter the unknown or lose everything she swore to protect.

Thank you to the author Karla Molina for the ARC.

Veil of Embers by Karla Molina is a richly imagined high fantasy debut that pulled me in with its atmospheric worldbuilding, Celtic-inspired magic, and deeply character-driven storytelling. Sorcha’s journey as a druid ranger sworn to guard the Veil is compelling from the start — she’s observant, restrained, and quietly powerful, which makes her gradual awakening feel earned rather than rushed.

One of the things I appreciated most was the use of multiple points of view, which adds emotional depth and context without pulling focus from the core story. The mythology and magic system unfold slowly, but consistently — nothing ever contradicts what’s already been established, even as the world expands. That attention to internal logic made the fantasy elements feel grounded and intentional.

The romance is a true slow burn, with closed-door moments sprinkled in rather than dominating the narrative. It’s built on trust, restraint, and choice, which fit the tone perfectly. One of my favorite lines captures that dynamic beautifully:

“She didn’t need saving. She needed someone who saw the fire in her soul and chose to burn beside her.”

Kyron’s arc — especially his shift from observer to protector — felt especially strong. Lines like,
“You may have started out as my duty, Sorcha… but you’re more than that now,”

and

“Careful. Say things like that and I’ll think you enjoy having me this close,” perfectly reflect the quiet tension and emotional weight of their connection.

The book also balances its darker themes with sharp humor and banter. One standout exchange made me laugh out loud:
“Well,” he mused, “it was dramatic. Another second and you would’ve become the next verse of my favorite nursery rhyme.”

And yes — Chapter 32 absolutely deserves its own shout-out. We love a cat 🐱. The talking, sassy Cait Sídhe brought levity, wit, and personality to the story in a way that never felt gimmicky.

There are also some genuinely powerful reflections woven throughout, especially around identity, control, and resilience. One line that really stuck with me:

“Real power comes from rising above the things that try to destroy you.”

I’m also very intrigued by where the story goes next — particularly Riona’s arc. Moments like,
“Anger burns fast, Riona. It consumes and then leaves you empty. Use it. Don’t let it use you,”
hint at deeper complexity, and I’m excited to see how her storyline unfolds in the next installment.

The pacing is slower at times, but it feels deliberate rather than dragging, prioritizing emotional beats and character growth over constant action. I find this happens often in high fantasy driven novels that need more world building/character building as well.

Overall, this was a strong first book that answered enough questions to feel satisfying while leaving plenty of threads open — and I’m genuinely looking forward to continuing the series.

3.75 stars rounded up!
Veil of Embers is a debut novel with a Druid magic system centered in Celtic mythology.
The use of runes was very interesting and I liked that the characters each had types of magic that they really excelled in. I really enjoyed that each time a new myth was introduced, I was able to look up and find the real lore. That aspect really kept me intrigued.
I liked the descriptions of the sickness plaguing the forest and the mystery that was soon to be discovered.
Cat and his humor were very enjoyable! I liked his character and his evolution in the story.
Veil of Embers was a great first novel for this author. Thank you Karla Molina for the advanced reader copy of your debut! I really enjoyed the opportunity to read and submit my honest review.
This first novel really set up the story that is to come. There’s some questions left unanswered and it will be interesting to see what happens beyond the veil in book 2!

I throughly enjoyed this read. I am beyond excited to purchase this book this coming February 9th and have the gorgeous physical copy added to my collection of trophies.

This book was full of twists and turns that created a magnificently vivid experience as if I were in the presence of those who walked the streets of Lumora religiously. The spices, the smells, the feelings. The Circle of Light is just one of many keeps throughout the realms. All doing the same tasks, different ways. Keeping balance and peace between the mortal world and Otherworld, something dark has emerged and it’s meddling with fate dangerously. Sorcha and the rest of the Circle will have to work together while staying cautious of the unknown tied with the Otherworld in order to save not only herself but the others she has yet to meet…

Found family
Touch her and die
Banter
Memorable characters
Trading sides
Gives you all the feels

Sorcha is a guard of the veil, her job is to observe and report. She starts to have dreams that seem too real, strange things start to happen and a dark figure is stalking her. Sorcha begins to question things.
Enter Kyron, his job is to observe and report on Sorcha, but soon he can not stand to just observe anymore. Kyron knows more than he is willing to say.
Together they must find a way to stop the darkness that is killing their world on both sides of the veil.

I give Karla major props for this story.
This was a great first book. It answered some questions but left plenty of room for the story to grow, which just made me want the next book more.
The writing flowed really well and was easy to follow. The pacing kept me engaged the whole time.
The Celtic mythology felt well researched and thoughtfully worked into the story without being overwhelming.
I really appreciated the consistency of the plot and story, especially with the magic system. While the magic system wasn’t fully explained right away, nothing conflicted with how it had already been used earlier in the book.
The worldbuilding was immersive without being overly detailed. The descriptions of places, colors, and even scents were vivid enough that I could clearly picture everything and triggered memories.
The characters are easy to get attached to. Each with their own personality and emotional depth that allowed emotional moments to hit hard.
I absolutely cannot wait for the next book

Thank you to the author for a gifted paperback copy of this beautiful book!

What I loved: the descriptions! The paragraphs that pulled in the sights and smells around the characters helped build the world they were in, without dragging on or taking away from the story. I loved the found family Karla has created around Sorcha, our FMC. The book gave me just enough to keep me reading and not wanting to put it down- I tore through this in 2 days.

What was a miss for me? I didn't realize this was the first book in a series! I kept thinking, how is she going to wrap this up in the next few chapters? So now I am invested and will forever read anything Karla releases, hopefully as an ARC reader- if I am lucky. The only other "negative" for me was my personal lack of knowledge of Celtic mythology this book is built on. I benefitted from googling the creatures and gods she referenced. I love a story with monsters though, so this was a small inconvenience.

Veil of Embers is a Celtic-flavored portal fantasy that follows Sorcha, a ranger in the Circle of Light, as creeping corruption seeps into her forest, her city of Lumora, and even the people she loves. Strange reanimated beasts, a spreading sick bloom in the woods, and a willfully blind council set the stage while a second thread follows Kyron of the Tuatha Dé Danann, who faces the cost of dark magic up close, and a third thread tracks Riona as she gets entangled with a forbidden grimoire and the very charming, very suspect Vaelric. As the circle investigates, the rot in their world deepens, the old gods feel nearer, and the story builds toward Sorcha, Kyron, and the shapeshifter Cat stepping through the Veil itself into a new realm, leaving this first installment as a clear launch point for a larger series.

I really liked the way Karla Molina writes moment to moment. The opening trial with Sorcha and the animated wolf grabbed me right away, and the tone never really lets go after that. The prose is descriptive and sensory, with a lot of attention to sounds, smells, and texture, so the forest scenes and Lumora’s streets feel lived in. The library of Verdant Light, with its living tree and the mirror portal tucked into an alcove, is a good example, it feels cozy and ominous at the same time. The banter inside the Circle is warm and funny and gave me that “found family” vibe without feeling like a sitcom room, and the fight and horror scenes with the corrupted wolves, the dead livestock, and the black flower in the woods have real teeth. The pacing stays pretty steady, more slow-burning investigation and creeping dread than constant action, and then ramps up in the last act when the Veil finally opens. I will say it ends on a pretty hard “now we step into the new world” beat, so as a reader, I finished the last page already mentally reaching for book two.

The book worked for me because it is not just monsters in the trees. It keeps exploring the cost of power and the way hurt people go looking for shortcuts. Kyron’s mercy killing of Alenia, whose body has been twisted by dark magic, hits that theme in a brutal way, and it frames his later choices with a lot of quiet grief. Riona’s storyline with the Dark Book feels like watching someone slip into an addiction one page at a time, she is lonely and angry, the book tells her exactly what she wants to hear, and she keeps going back even while she knows better. The text does not glamorize that, it lets you feel the pull and the danger. On top of that, you have Sorcha’s trauma, the loss of her parents, the nightmares, panic, and the way she keeps forcing herself to function while her magic behaves more and more strangely. The preface is clear about the heavy topics, and I appreciated that the story leans into anxiety, despair, and even thoughts of not wanting to go on, but does so with empathy rather than shock value.

The character dynamics were a high point for me. The Circle feels like a real unit, full of teasing, half-serious flirting, and little crushes that may or may not go anywhere. Eirin, Drystan, Mason, Rhosyn, and Emry each get small moments that make them feel like people, not just names standing behind Sorcha in a formation. The romance threads stay fairly low heat and “closed door”, which fits the tone, but there is plenty of tension, especially between Sorcha and Kyron. I liked that their connection grows out of shared responsibility and shared guilt, not just “you are hot and mysterious”. Riona and Vaelric bring a darker, more questionable chemistry that adds another flavor. Worldbuilding-wise, I enjoyed the Irish myth roots, the Tuatha Dé Danann, Samhain, the Pooka, and the Undines in the waterfall, and the glossary up front is a nice touch, so the names and terms do not feel like homework.

By the time Sorcha, Kyron, and Cat step through the cracked earth into a sky full of dragons and a perpetual sunset, I felt both satisfied with the arc of this book and very aware that the larger story is only getting started. I closed it feeling a little wrung out, fond of this messy, brave group, and curious about how far into the dark the story is willing to go in future volumes. I would recommend Veil of Embers to readers who like character-driven epic fantasy with a slightly spooky edge, strong found family energy, Celtic myth influences, and slow-burning romance. It feels especially right for older teens and adults who do not mind heavier themes like grief, anxiety, and dark magic, and who enjoy that feeling of walking from a haunted, familiar forest into a bright and dangerous new world and knowing the real journey is just beginning.

'By the Morrigan' Karla Molina's debut novel is an amazing story of Druid rangers trying to protect the natural balance, while there is a corruption that seem intent of destroying that same balance.

The gorgeous world building within this story takes us through beautiful landscapes, friendships and moments. Then it dives into the dark corruption that has begun to spread through the land. With twisted creatures and devastation of once pristine forests the corruption shows no sign of slowing, however their orders are to keep watch over the ever encroaching devastation.

Along the way we get to know the Circle members trying to protect the world with our FMC Sorcha at the heart of the story. With the situation unfolding she questions everything she thought she knew about herself. To try and protect the land she swore to keep safe, she has to accept that her past and her power is more then what she once believed it to be. I enjoyed that we had the story from multiple view points which gave a more rounded perspective as we moved through the story. Without Riona's point of view towards the end of the book I think we would have lost some of the impact of a large twist in the story. However there were moments where we switched POV in the middle of the chapter which took me a moment to catch up with the change. There was also a few times where I felt the story was ramping up to change direction or slow down that threw me a couple of times. For example we have Sorcha in danger but we change to Riona's POV for a few chapters before we jump back to the situation with Sorcha. I loved the chapters of Riona's POV but I also wanted to know what happened to Sorcha.

All in all I loved the story and characters of this book, as well as the celtic and Irish folklore dotted throughout. I am excited to see where book two will take all of the characters as we leave on such a cliffhanger.

Thank you to the author for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Sorcha is a druid ranger sworn to guard the Veil, the shifting boundary that protects her realm from the dangerous forces beyond it. Her duty is meant to be simple: observe and report. But when unsettling dreams begin bleeding into reality and a dark figure starts to stalk her, the Veil itself begins to unravel. Monsters slip through, ancient magic stirs, and Sorcha’s runes awaken with a power she never wanted. With Samhain approaching and the Druid Council offering few answers, Sorcha turns to Kyron, a watcher who knows more than he lets on, and a cryptic Cait Sídhe. Together, they must uncover the truth before both worlds fall.

What stood out most to me was how emotionally grounded this story felt. The writing excels at conveying grief, fear, and longing in a visceral, almost tactile way, making Sorcha’s inner world feel especially real. Though the book leans more character-driven than plot-heavy, there’s more than enough forward momentum to keep things engaging, and the balance between sorrow and moments of levity is well balanced. I also appreciated that Sorcha is allowed to exist as both a capable ranger and have moments of femininity without making a big deal of it. The supporting cast was well developed, and I was genuinely invested in their fates.

That said, the writing style can occasionally feel a bit clunky when transitioning between actions. Particularly early on, the sheer number of characters makes the opening chapters something of a learning curve. Once the story settles, however, it becomes much easier to follow, and the emotional throughline remains strong throughout. While this read took dedication and careful attention, this is a richly imagined and compelling start to a series, and one that left me eager to continue. Many thanks to the author for this ARC. This is my honest review.

3.5/5 And the creature descriptions? Terrifying.

4.5⭐️

Veil of embers is an immersive, atmospheric fantasy that really shines in mood, mystery, and mythology.

From the start, I felt a little thrown into the middle of the action, with some passages not fully explained and very little initial grounding. At times, it was confusing, and I found myself wishing for more context early on.

That said, the story definitely unravels as you keep reading. The deeper I got into the book, the clearer everything became, and the initial confusion slowly turned into intrigue rather than frustration. The payoff for sticking with it is absolutely worth it.

The atmosphere is one of the book’s strongest elements—rich, moody, and almost haunting. I also loved the sense of mystery woven throughout the story, which kept me engaged and eager to uncover the truth behind the world and its characters.

The Celtic myths and folklore were a huge highlight for me, adding depth, uniqueness, and a beautifully ancient feel to the narrative.

The romance is a subtle but impactful element of the story. Rather than overpowering the plot, it develops gradually and feels emotionally grounded, enhancing the character dynamics and raising the stakes without overshadowing the fantasy elements. The slow-burn nature of the relationship makes the moments between the characters feel earned, intimate, and meaningful.

Despite a slightly disorienting beginning, Veil of Embers delivers a compelling, emotionally layered fantasy experience. A solid 4.5 stars, especially for readers who enjoy slow reveals, strong atmosphere, folklore-inspired worlds and romance that grows naturally alongside the story.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story, plot, and worldbuilding were standout elements, and the descriptive writing made the setting feel vivid and expansive. The stakes were consistently high, yet the narrative still found space for cosy moments, warm friendships, and a touch of romance, which created a nice balance.

My main challenge was the pacing. The momentum would build during action-heavy scenes, only to slow abruptly with quieter chapters focused on meals, markets, or day‑to‑day tasks. The rapid transitions between locations also made it difficult at times to stay grounded in the story’s geography. That said, the book reads very quickly, which kept me engaged.

I enjoyed the characters overall, though the introduction of many new faces in quick succession made it easy to lose track. Several newcomers conveniently had the exact information the FMC needed, which occasionally made the plot feel more guided than earned.

Overall, this is a fast, engaging read with an epic scope and strong potential. While the pacing and character development were uneven in places, the world and core story were compelling enough to keep me turning pages.

Readers who I think will love this:
- Readers who love lush worldbuilding, ancient magic, and myth‑leaning fantasy realms.
- Fans of cosy fantasy elements woven into darker, high‑stakes plots.
- Anyone who enjoys warm friendships, gentle romance, and a touch of found‑family energy.
- Readers looking for a quick, immersive read with vivid settings.
- Fantasy fans who don’t mind lighter character development or uneven pacing as long as the world and core story deliver.

We follow Sorcha, a Druid ranger sworn to guard the Veil that separates her world from the dangerous creatures beyond it. When Eadartha begins to rot and a tear in the Veil allows creatures to slip through, Sorcha discovers she possesses hidden elemental powers powerful enough to destroy the Dark Druid, who will stop at nothing to see her fall. Alongside Kyron, the rest of her Druid ranger friends, and her loyal Cat Sidhe animal companion, Sorcha must face the growing darkness threatening their world.

This is a slower-paced, character-driven fantasy that focuses more on atmosphere and worldbuilding than action. I loved the vivid storytelling, the variety of magical creatures, the Celtic inspired setting, and the elemental magic system, which added richness to the world. While the story wasn’t very action packed and moved more slowly than I usually prefer, I genuinely loved all of the characters and their dynamics. By the end, I was excited to see where this story goes next and how the magic, characters, and world continue to unfold.

✨ Overall: immersive Celtic fantasy with elemental magic, strong characters, and promising potential. Thank you Karla Molina for this ARC!

first of all, we all know i’m a sucker for found family, and the friendship group in this book was so good. the dynamic honestly reminded me so much of the main squad in Fourth Wing with that tight knit, banter filled, ride-or-die energy. and it made me wish i was part of the group. i adored it!

also… i could not stop accidentally self inserting as the main character because her description reminded me so much of myself ahaha! which obviously made the reading experience even more fun.

as someone who loves mythology, the Celtic folklore in this book was such a highlight for me. seeing so many different creatures and legends show up was *chefs kiss*. and can we talk about the sassy talking cat?? because i now require one in my life immediately.

the magic system (centered around runes and druidism) was really interesting, and i enjoyed learning how it all worked within the world. i liked the setting, i liked the characters, and i’m genuinely excited to see where their story goes in book two.

huge thank you to Karla for sending me a copy🥹 i’m so grateful. this was such a fun read, and I can’t wait to see what she does next.

I received an ARC copy of this book from the author Karla Molina! Thank you for letting me read it prior to publishing!

This was one of the first books I’ve read with Celtic mythology and I can tell the author did her homework! Thank you for the glossary! I still had difficulty with the names flipping back a few times for pronunciation lol!

Karla did an amazing job of descriptive world building, which kept me intrigued throughout the book. The twists and turns in the story had me guessing while reading.
The slow burn romance in the book was well done and did not take away from the story with that being said I’m not sure if I’m on team E or team K I like them both!
I loved the banter between the characters it had me giggling. You can definitely feel the found family with this group.
Now that ending had me needing more!! I will definitely be buying a trophy copy for my shelf and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

I enjoyed this book so much! And means a lot coming from me, because I generally prefer a first-person pov! The Author writes in such a way that you really don't need the first-person POV to become wrapped up in the characters, which is a talent in and of itself.

If you are the kind of reader who loves Celtic folklore and faerie beasts, this is definitely the book for you. I enjoyed the nods at traditional fae folklore, and I really enjoyed reading from the perspective of people within a druidic circle. (It made my little D&D heart happy to draw comparisons to the druid concept in DND and the laws of nature in this book)

I also appreciated that it wasn't just the FMC and the MMC who had emotional ARC's but Riona as well! My heart ached for her. She's strong, stubborn, and watching her navigate loss, and learning about her family has me itching to hear more about her.

A delicious mix of flirtatious men and dangerous circumstances, and a glowing five stars from me!

I was really drawn to the concept of this story—lush worldbuilding, ancient Celtic magic, and cozy romantasy woven into higher stakes. On paper, it was absolutely my kind of read.

Unfortunately, the pacing was the villain in this story. The action scenes built momentum, then stalled with frequent location jumps making it hard to stay grounded. The second half improved slightly, but the uneven flow eventually pulled me out.

The characters were likable, but too many were introduced too fast and to be honest it was really hard to keep track or even feel invested because of the sheer number.

There’s clear potential and I think the right reader will love it. For me, though, I ultimately chose to DNF when I realized I was pushing myself to continue instead of wanting to.

*Thank you to Karla Molina for the arc opportunity.

So grateful to be part of the eARC team and the opportunity to provide an honest review! If you enjoy heart-warming banter, lovable characters (magical beings included) and descriptive imagery, this is your next found family fantasy to add to your TBR. What a great start for a debut romantasy! I found Sorcha’s journey fast-paced and compelling as she navigates the mysteries that take her beyond her ranger’s post in the Circle of Light. The intrigue behind the Veil unraveling, a brewing love triangle, and adventurous tone steeped in Celtic mythology had me “just one more chapter”-ing until the end, at which point I wished there was more! Great setup for the rest the series and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds.

If you are a fan of descriptive world building and magic systems then this is the book for you.

A big than you to Karla for sharing this ARC with me.

I was really interested in the Celtic Mythology and the book felt like it has a unique space in the fantasy genre.

I understand that this is the first book in a series so there is more of the story yet to be told however the plot moved a little too slowly for my preference with more focus on the descriptive world building in this first book. I can see a love triangle, magical battles and betrayal ahead but would have liked more of it to have made it into the plot of this first book.

I do look forward to finding out where Sorcha’s story goes next.

It’s a dark fantasy with amazing characters and great worldbuilding. It’s a spooky read filled with ancient magic, yearning relationships, and betrayal.👀
The story follows Sorcha and her friends as they try to uncover the mysteries of the veil and how to keep the balance. Along the way, Sorcha meets Kyron and Cat, who help her navigate the changes in the realm.
I love the trio (the party!), but there are so many other characters I’ve got my eyes on 😩. And I really can’t help myself with the villains I’m genuinely invested in all of them. That alone says a lot about how well they’re written. 🖤🐺

Thank you to the author for the eARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Molina clearly did plenty of research on Celtic mythology and weaving it seamlessly into the story without leaving the reader confused as to which gods govern which elements or about the countless mythological creatures outside of just the fae. The vivid imagery effortlessly brings the picturesque settings to life, pulling you into the story right alongside such lovable characters. This one is definitely for the romantasy lovers that enjoy a good slow burn.

I really enjoyed the world building. The Celtic mythology was interesting to read about and I felt like the author really knew what she was writing about! I liked the relationships, how they progressed and how you could really feel what they felt for each other. I feel like this book had everything I usually enjoy in a book while maybe a little less action filled. I am intrigued to see where book 2 goes from here.

Thank you so much to the author for this ARC.

I really liked the concept of this story, and the storyline. While I appreciated the world-building, I found the pacing of the story to be haphazard — at times it was slow and meticulous, while others felt rushed. I will say that I became more interested during the second half of the book, and the last 20% was probably my favorite. I’m excited to read the next part of this.

This author was amazing with her storytelling in this book! Sorcha and Kyron were my favorite characters, of course all the characters were wonderful. There was adventure, romance, and a lot of humor. There were some tear jerking moments throughout the book, which really got me in the end. Finding the mysteries of who Sorcha was was a real plot twist that I didn't see coming! Her little sidekick was cute too, the kitty cat of course following her around. Overall 10 out of 10 for this one!

A big thank you to Karla Molina for allowing me an arc ahead of release!

Overall, I really enjoyed the premise of the book. I love the Celtic mythology that is tied all throughout the story, and animal companions are my love! When cat came into the story, I found myself thinking "Here we go!" I felt as though the storyline was well thought out and I'm interested to see where it goes.

My reasons for 3 stars is I found myself getting a little confused at some of the characters. Who they were, their story, where they came from, etc. A connections to characters in a book is very important to me and I did feel a strugle there. That's my own personal reading preference.

A solid 3 stars rating for me and I would definitely pick up the sequel!

What an amazing start to a fantasy series! There is so much world building and plenty of characters and personalities to keep you engaged. And that ending will have you begging for book 2. Good characters turn bad and other characters turn badass with interesting powers. The guardian cat with a sassy attitude is such a fun touch to the story. Karla did such a good job for her first book and I’m so excited to see where the story goes!

The way this book had me in a chokehold. The world building was enough to keep me reading. The way this author takes you into the world of Eadartha by giving you the sights and sounds and smells, makes you feel like you are really there.
Sorcha is your FMC and she is sworn to guard the veil. She along with the rest of the Circle must find a way to work together after the veil beings to tear and stay on alert about the unknowns linked to the Otherworld. Will there will be enough? Or will they have to rely on outside help to keep their realm protected?
