Beech is attuned to everything on board. The noises within the submarine may act like white noise to the other sailors but to Beech he’s always cataloging, listening, and picking up on patterns. Operating on a seemingly different frequency than others. With just eight days left until the San Juan Naval Submarine is due to resurface, Beech picks up on a gasket breakdown and a hull fissure, both within acceptable tolerances, prompting leadership to ignore his concerns. Told by the captain to stop finding problems where there are none, Beech remains uneasy as eleven men lose their lives to the failure just days later.
Quickly discharged after the San Juan incident, Beech finds work in a shipyard. Spending his sleepless nights crafting precise handmade watches, spending hundreds of hours ensuring their accuracy. In what seems to be another day of the same type of work, Beech is suddenly approached by a mysterious woman, offering him a business card with remote coordinates. Ignoring the offer, Beech loses himself in the weekly visits to Marcus’s grave, a friend, father, and soldier who gave his life on the San Juan.
It isn’t until his sister is given another identical business card, tasked with relaying the card once again to Beech that he seeks out the coordinates.
