A dying challenge. A blood‑stained name. A mystery that refuses to stay buried.

London is no stranger to scandal, but when journalist Theodolphus Burke summons author and amateur sleuth Mikaela Forsythe with an urgent note—only to be found bleeding to death outside a pub—the case becomes personal. Burke was no friend to Mikaela; he mocked her work, belittled her investigations, and delighted in provoking enemies through his ruthless exposés of London’s darkest secrets.

As he lies dying, Burke presses a note into Mikaela’s hand bearing a single woman’s name—and a final, taunting What will you do now, Mikaela Forsythe?

Determined to uncover the truth, Mikaela and her partner Brodie are drawn into a new inquiry that cuts through every layer of society, from shadowed streets to privileged drawing rooms. Who was the woman named in blood? Why did Burke reach out to Mikaela of all people? And who wanted the Times’ most notorious reporter silenced forever?

I was happy to pick this series back up after a short hiatus. The last two books (14 & 15) seemed (by the book summaries) to have serial killer plots. Although I do read these as well (usually in contemporary novels-sparingly); I generally avoid these types of novels. This book was back to a 'regular' murder plot. (With a little extra thrown in.) I easily reacquainted myself with the couple as well as the regulars (although a lot of them were missing in this book or made very brief appearances).

I won't repeat the summary. A well known--but generally hated--character gets murdered. So the big question (of course) is why? AND why did he want to see Mikaela? (The revealed reason makes sense.) He was ready for this meeting with her (i.e. the already written note). Unfortunately, someone got to him first. But true to character, he irked her to the end-his last breath. It was quite the scene. I liked how Brodie and Mikaela worked both as a team and individuals. I wished we had more of his POV. They followed the clues. I do not recall any lulls in the action. Justice was met in the end.

I was again a bit annoyed at some things that are mentioned in all the books. Although the author seems to do it not as often as in previous books. (Previously for me it was ad nauseum.) They are: the aunt's whiskey, Brodie's 'dark gaze' and him being a stubborn Scot, the Templeton character, (she brought whether she's featured in the plot or not), and lastly the 'other things' and/or toes curling metaphors. Typically, they're brought up so much, they're like characters in their own right.

Another thing I can never quite understand is why the author writes the couple the way she does. Although they have a few tender moments here and there, they are generally the most unsentimental/unromantic couple. Often they are NOT even introduced as a married couple (she's Miss Forsythe. Why is that? (I have also always wondered why she never calls his Angus, but I digress.) There's rare declarations of love. I think Brodie actually said it in one of the earlier books. It's a rare thing with these too. (Brodie sometimes says something to the effect Do you know what you mean to me or how I would feel if anything were to happen to you. And that about it. Mikaela often mentions how much she...trusts Brodie. Guess that's their love language. For a character who is written to be so worldly, independent and modern etc., physically intimacy is often referred to by (vague) euphemisms. As long as it's not crude, what's the big deal? I wonder at it.

CONTENT
Intimacy: There's some kissing. And love-making is alluded to (as 'other things' etc.). But all closed door.
Violence: Well, murders (actual and attempted) happens of course. A brutal assault. A sinister plot.
Language: I believe there probably was some light cursing.

Good writing, a well crafted tale; but…

This was a great mystery which reflects extensive historical research and a knowledge of “state of the art technology” for that time period.

Mikaela is a credible narrator… She is insightful, intelligent, and passionate about her work—and infuriated about how evil people treat others for their own advancement. She’s self-sufficient and capable. An admirable voice for the story.

The pacing of the plot was well-constructed.

I have read books from this series in the past, but I found myself disappointed in this installment as the author did not grab my interest.

I very much like the style of this author and always look forward to new releases. However, for some reason, I felt like I was reading a report. For instance, Mikaela describes Brodie and their relationship—that has grown over the years.… But I didn’t feel a connection between the two characters. Maybe this book relied a great deal on previous books of the series so that the reader was already prepared to continue on with a relationship that was already well-established. But it did not come off of the page for me.

I love to read; I devour books as quickly as I can. The book is well written, no doubt. But it did not grab a hold of me with both hands. I didn’t feel invested.

There are questions left at the end about the man called Stein… Things alluded to, but not explained—and so, perhaps unnecessary?! Mr. Connor makes inferences regarding Stein’s sadistic sexual tendencies (a potential threat maybe for Mikaela?)—but the author provides no closure. Also, why does Stein try to enter the building near the end? It’s never explained. His placement in the story fell flat.

For me it was just too one-dimensional. And I’m sorry about that because I was excited to read the book.

Others might find it much more engaging than I did. The construction and presentation were quite good, but for me, it just didn’t seem to have any “soul.”

Another thrilling installment in Carla Simpson’s Angus Brodie and Mikaela Forsythe mystery series, this novel grabs you from the very first page. The story opens with an urgent note from Theodolphus Burke, the notorious Times reporter who has been both ally and adversary to Mikaela. When she arrives for their meeting, she finds him wounded and dying. With his last breath, Burke hands her a note bearing a woman’s name and taunts, “What will you do now, Mikaela Forsythe?”

Determined to discover the truth behind his murder, Brodie and Mikaela plunge into an investigation filled with unanswered questions and lurking dangers. It soon becomes clear that Burke was on the verge of uncovering something others were desperate to keep hidden. As the duo methodically chases down leads, they uncover secrets that cut through every layer of society, from shadowed alleyways to opulent drawing rooms. When the mysterious woman is finally found and reveals what she knows, the stakes rise, and the danger becomes very real.

Simpson’s gift for intricate plotting and compelling character development shines throughout. She scatters just enough clues to keep readers guessing, creating a suspenseful journey that is impossible to put down. I love how Brodie has opened up and is more verbal in his feelings towards Mikaela, their relationship is deepening and remains a beautiful part of the series —authentic, tender, and deeply moving.

At its heart, this book is a tale of loyalty, courage, friendship, and the lengths we go to uncover the truth. Fans of the series will find themselves thoroughly rewarded, and newcomers will be eager to go back to the beginning. By the final page, you’re left both satisfied with the resolution and hungry for the next adventure in Brodie and Mikaela’s world.

Deadly Sin by Carla Simpson, the 16th installment in the Angus Brodie and Mikaela Forsythe series, is a richly layered mystery that grips you from the very first page.
When Mikaela Forsythe responds to a request from a newspaper man, she instead finds him brutally attacked—and left with a cryptic note bearing the name Adele DeMille. What follows is a compelling investigation that weaves together a murdered journalist, a missing woman with a questionable occupation, and the death of a tailor’s assistant. Each thread deepens the mystery, raising urgent questions: What was Burke investigating? Why did he reach out using Mikaela’s pen name? And how are all these lives connected?
Simpson masterfully builds suspense, revealing clues at just the right pace while keeping readers guessing. The plot is intricate without feeling overwhelming, and the tension builds steadily toward a satisfying resolution.
Fans of the series will enjoy the return of familiar faces, including Rupert, Mr. Cavendish, and Aunt Antonia, all of whom add warmth and continuity to the story.
What truly stands out is Mikaela herself—intelligent, determined, and quietly fearless. Her perspective anchors the story and makes the stakes feel personal.
With its strong characters, layered plot, and lingering sense of intrigue—especially in Burke’s final question, “What will you do now?”—Deadly Sin is a thoroughly satisfying read for mystery lovers.

Wow, this new book is amazing; it will grab you on page one and not let go till the end. Theodolphus Burke has been a pain in Mikaela’s side for a very long time, sometimes giving information or helping some but mostly getting in the way of their investigation. She receives a note from him, asking her to meet him at Old Bell Traven. This is not the place where a lady goes after darkness and is alone. Brodie had not returned yet, and she could not deny her curiosity of what Burke was up too. As soon as she gets there, she knows something is very wrong as the crowd is outside, and Burke is on the ground, bleeding out. He grabs her hand and puts a note in it right before he dies. Oh, my what could it all mean. Then she must explain to Brodie why he must get her from Scotland yard in the middle of the night. Wow, so much going on in this story. Tons of secrets, betrayal, spies and danger with Brodie getting hurt too. Just what have they stumbled into? Another great read for this series, and I was super happy to see more personal emotions between Brodie and Mikaela as a couple. Carla left us with a tease of what is to come in the next book. I also wonder when we will learn what Lily and Munro have been up to? Grab a copy and get started; you will not be sorry. Series is better if read in order, but each book can be enjoyed as a standalone. I received an ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.

This series is so good...I'm always anxiously awaiting the next installment to drop...and it NEVER disappoints.

This book finds Mikaela literally catching the last moments of life of a journalist (and sometime nemesis). With his cryptic clues, she and Brodie set out to uncover the reason for his brutal murder and find themselves dealing with a much more complicated and far-reaching/dangerous conspiracy.

Simpson always gives interesting plots, great dialogue/humor and of course, Brodie and Mikaela (and supporting cast) are such a joy to follow. I love the dynamics of an unusual and unique couple finding each other and becoming so besotted and devoted to each other. They are so sweet together...even when bickering and frustrated.

I had noticed with the exit of one of the supporting cast members the possible hint to a spin-off series. And while I think that would be fun to start (and will do so if it comes to pass), I also fervently hope that this series continues as I would dearly miss Mikaela and Brodie and their world.

Historical mystery fans, if you haven't discovered this series, give it a try...so glad I did.

What will you do now?

That’s how it all starts, with a question from a dying man. Granted the man was extremely antagonistic during his life and most likely meant it to be taunting rather than asking for help and yet there it is what will you do now? So Mikaela and Brodie have their next case one where they don’t know the parameters and all they have is a slip of paper from a dead man with a name and a place. It leads them through a quagmire. So many unexpected twists and confusing pieces to this puzzle and exciting and sometimes dangerous adventures. Much more exciting than looking for a new house lol. I thought the absolute best part was when Mikaela held that peer at sword point and asked him with contempt if it was worth it. That was really the whole thing in a nutshell wasn’t it? Greed, betrayal and death for the whims of a few sneaky men. Fabulous read, just fabulous! I’m not even too mad at that ending sentence lol. I’ll be patient to find out what’s coming next.

Deadly Sin by Carla Simpson, the 16th book in the Angus Brodie and Mikaela Forsythe series, is one of loyalty, seeking truth at any cost and justice. Theodolphus Burke, London Times reporter, lays dying as Mikaela arrives at the scene. His last act is to push a note with a woman’s name on it. Now Mikaela and her partner Brodie begin the investigation of the murder and the woman whose name was given to her. It is a search that includes all levels of society.

Ms. Simpson has a gift in writing an intricate story with complex intriguing aspects but powerfully defined and continually developed characters. As Bordie and Mikaela continue to work together their relationship expands, taking on a deeper bond in emotions and attachment to each other. Then there are the twists in the story that may it difficult to stop reading until the case is solved satisfactorily.

What starts as a simple meeting with her least favorite newsman, turns into murder that takes Michaela and Brodie into intrigue and chaos. I enjoyed how the author wraps some real history into the fictional story. I loved how their relationship was more evident, especially Brodie holding her realizing how precious she is to him. Aunt Antonia is her normal crazy self and Lilly and Munro are still MIA. Crossing swords is involved, as well as knife fights and some political intrigue as well. After all, what is a Brodie and Michaela story without the ever frustrating Avery? Great story that keeps your attention and turning pages as fast as you can read.

Another amazing read. These books, I read as soon as I get them and find it hard to put down. I enjoy how Ms Simpson, weaves the past into the story without making it too much for those who have read all the past books. If you have not read any of the past books, this one can be read as a stand alone. It is a gripping tale, with murder mystery and suspense. The characters are wonderfully written and the story very easy to follow. This one has an interesting turn (no spoilers here) that will change how Mikaelia gets some of her information. It will be interesting to see how things are going to change in the future books. And when will we see Lilly agai? I received this as an ARC from Booksprout and freely give my review.

Deadly conspiracy
When Theodolphus Burke, journalist at The Times, is murdered right before an appointment with her, Mikaela investigates. Before dying, he gives her a piece of paper with a name and a location. His taunt “What will you do now, Emma Fortescue?” refers to the main character of Mikaela’s books, which Burke despised.
Mikaela and Brodie’s investigation will lead them from the fashionable St John’s Wood to the rookeries and diplomatic circles, when treasonous activities come to light. It becomes a race against the clock to remain ahead of the killer and protect a young actress who knows too much.

Theodolphus Burke, that odious journalist, has sent a very urgent message to Mikaela to meet with him. When she gets to the meeting place, to her surprise she finds Burke there dying. He thrusts a note into her hand and with his dying breath says, "What will you do now, Emma Fortescue?" That is the beginning of a mystery that twists and turns until the resolution.
We see the warmth and affection that Angus and Mikaela have for each other and of course let's not forget about that wonderfully brave dog, Rupert, along with all the other wonderful characters who make these stories so readable.

We keep getting little snippets of the private relationship Brodie and Mikaela have. It is actually enough for me. I'm left with seeing them jump the divide of their backgrounds, with their relationship so strong and caring. Their investigation goes into the realms of the power players, spies, assassins. As always, her aunt provides important knowledge about those in power and what is happening. Their little "family" of Rupert, Mr Cavendish, his wife, Brodie's former Met partner, and Dooley, becomes closer with each book. A tight-knit partnership.

I have enjoyed this series, but if you haven’t read the other books you can still enjoy this mystery. Angus and Mikaela get involved in the murder of a newspaper man who has been a bit of a pain to Mikaela. As they find clues they get more involved in a plot that involves some high status people. I enjoyed the historical notes at the end of the story.

Another exciting addition to this series. Mikaela starts an investigation after a reporter she is acquainted with gets killed. Brodie, her husband, of course, joins in and gets hurt after trying to deal with the assassin. They are led to an actress who has information that can unravel a plot to steal secrets. Mikaela and Brodie skirt the law as they are determined to get to the bottom of it.

Amateur sleuth, Mikayla Forsythe, is challenged by a man who ridiculed her, on his bloody death, he slips her a note (seriously? Who has time to write a note!). What will she do next.

Brodie is there for her, supportive and it’s on.

Such a great series

I devour Ms. Carla Simpson's books. There are too many well developed strong women who can handle their own, and managing to find a man who can appreciate her contributions. Easy read ,you'll want to finish quickly but then be disappointed when it's over.
