Something Like Home: A Dark STEM Romance

Rate this book
I’ve spent my life earning my place in rooms built to keep me out. Doors of opportunity slam shut, and I can only hold out hope for so long. When I'm finally seen for my abilities, and not my looks, I fall when I should run. The closer I get, the harder it becomes to tell where safety ends, and desire begins. I know better than to confuse power with care. I know better than to want what could cost me everything. He watches without crowding, protects without asking permission, and he never underestimates me. When the threats stop being theoretical, and the walls close in, I realize the most dangerous thing isn’t being seen---It’s wanting to stay. Some places don't just feel safe, they feel like something like
home.

This is a dark romance with heavy triggers. Reader's discretion is highly advised

This was actually a really good story. One of the key elements in this story was sexism in the work place as well as sexual assault and trauma. Unfortunately this exists quite frequently in the workplace and too often women stay quiet for fear of retaliation.

I loved Evie and Elijah's romance and just his overall support of not just her but all the women who he employed.

I received a copy in exchange for my honest review.

Just want to start of by saying I had no idea what STEM meant I had to google it but other than that this was actually a decent book. Don't get me wrong it is still a triggering book but not anywhere as heavy as some of Emily's other books.

This one is about Evelyn (Evie) who gets into computer stuff because of her parents and their death. We thankfully meet Elijah fairly early on and he is an absolute gem of a guy.

We get to learn that because of her look Evie hasn't had the best time interviewing for cybersecurity jobs because she doesn't look like the typical computer geek. Which lead to an unpleasant encounter with Andrew, Andrew just so happens to be one of Elijah close friends.

It is an insta-love story between Evie and Elijah. It is still on the heavier side so remember to check triggers.

Something Like Home by Emily Klepp is a powerful, emotionally heavy story that tackles trauma, survival, and the quiet strength it takes to keep standing when the world repeatedly tries to knock you down. This book does not shy away from difficult subject matter, but it handles it with care, intention, and purpose.

Evie is a brilliant cybersecurity professional who has spent her life trying to make her parents proud after their passing along with proving she belongs in spaces that were never designed to welcome her. She is sharp, outspoken, and fiercely intelligent, but beneath that confidence is a woman carrying deep anxiety, rage, and the scars of being dismissed and violated simply for existing. Watching her navigate her career while refusing to shrink herself was one of the most compelling aspects of this story.

Elijah is not written as a savior, but as a steady presence. He listens without overpowering, protects without control, and respects Evie’s strength instead of trying to tame it. Their connection builds on mutual respect, trust, and understanding, making their relationship feel grounded even as the stakes rise. He never questions her reactions or minimizes her pain, and that emotional support is just as important as any physical protection.

What makes this story stand out is its honesty. It explores how trauma lingers, how anger can be a form of self defense, and how healing is not linear. The threats feel real, the tension is constant, and the emotional weight never feels gratuitous. Every hard moment serves the larger message rather than shock value.

Emily Klepp continues to prove she is not afraid to write the stories others avoid. Her ability to balance darkness with hope, pain with connection, and strength with vulnerability is remarkable. Something Like Home is not just about surviving trauma, but about finding a place and a person that feels safe enough to breathe again.

This book is intense, meaningful, and deeply validating. A must read for those who appreciate emotionally rich romance with substance, resilience, and heart.

A woman not afraid to speak up

This story is heartbreaking yet absolutely powerful. This is dark, raw and oh so real. This follows Evie as she finally get her dream job in a male dominated field. Elijah only sees what she knows and offers her the job based on experience, schooling, and attitude not her gender.

Evie accepts the job and also finds out that Elijah is her old boss's brother so she knew he wouldn't care that she was a woman unlike the other interviews. Unfortunately she also sees something from an employee that suggests someone at the company was or had been only worried about gender.

This is the story of one man who abused countless women because he thought they should be at home and if they were in the office they should be serving. Fortunately this man had already been fired and Elijah was trying to find out how much damage he had done. Unfortunately he is currently obsessed with Evie.

I absolutely love Eve and how she was able to handle everything that happened to her and the other women. Her strength and willingness to speak out gave hope and courage to an entire room of women.

The love and support found in this book was absolutely beautiful. This is how women and men should be supportive. The side characters are just as important as the main couple and together they are unstoppable.

Also, the dude was punished but not in the way I expected. I absolutely loved how this all came together and ended.

I love Emily and the way she is always tackling the trauma people have. She mostly deals with women's trauma but she has also shown the trauma that happens to men too. Keep on healing.

Wow, where do I start! What a read!
Something Like Home is a real emotional rollercoaster of a ride with all the feels/
Once again Emily Klepp writes with such raw honesty and respect for such a taboo trauma that not everyone respects.
Evie fight her way to the top of her profession. Proud of her achievements she is met with sexism due to it being a male dominated profession.
So when she meets Andrew for an interview and he attempts to force himself on her she finds solace in her mentor and friend Jennifer who offers her an opportunity to interview with someone she trusts.
Elijah, owner and CEO of Ciphernet, is instantly attracted to Evie and finds that he knows she is quite capable of doing the COO job on offer.
There is quite an elaborate backstory which follows Evie and her experience with Andrew, who also happens to be the previous COO of Ciphernet and Elijah's friend.
To say there are twists to this story is an understatement but it keeps you on your toes as Evie and Elijah attempt to bring down Andrew as it is revealed that his sexual prowess has been inflicted on more than just Evie.
Stalker and known sexual predator, Andrew is fixated on Evie!
I loved the push and pull. Evie, even with her history is a strong woman who takes no shite, but still shows a vulnerable side when it comes to her healing from her past traumas.
A brilliant one session read for me as I wanted to see Evie come out on top and Andrew to topple, so yeh loved how the story developed and Evie did indeed win her man and secure her future!

Something Like Home: A Dark STEM Romance – Emily Klepp

Emily Klepp never tiptoes around uncomfortable truths—and once again, she dives straight into the dark, the disturbing, and the deeply human.

Something Like Home is a story about power, ambition, safety, and desire—about earning space in rooms that were never built for you, and the dangerous pull of finally being seen for who you are, not how you look.

Evie is brilliant, driven, and painfully aware of the cost of survival in male-dominated spaces. When opportunity finally opens its door, the line between protection and control, safety and obsession, becomes terrifyingly blurred. Elijah watches without hovering, protects without asking, and never underestimates her—which somehow makes him irresistible.

The romance is dark, tender, and intentional. Nothing is written for shock value alone. Emily’s prose balances intensity with vulnerability, creating characters you don’t just read about—you root for. Evie and Elijah stay with you long after the final page.

⚠️ Important: This is a dark romance with heavy triggers. Please read responsibly, check all content warnings, and remember—this is fiction. Life should not imitate art. Your safety always comes first.

Thank you to Emily Klepp for the ARC. This story was haunting, thought-provoking, and unforgettable.

Something Like Home is an amazing read that shines a light on a lot of important topics like sexism, sexual trauma, and anxiety. Evie is young, beautiful, intelligent, and a cybersecurity guru. As a result, she has had an issue getting a job in the male dominated field and was often passed up. The lady she was interning for managed to get her an interview to be the COO with Ciphernet one of the top cybersecurity firms in the world. The owner of the company Elijah, saw how amazing Evie was and what a huge asset she would be and hired her on. It turns out, one of the men who previously interviewed Evie and was inappropriate towards her was formerly with Ciphernet. And unfortunately, that interaction is not the only one she has with him. Evie is such an amazing and real character. She has dealt with a lot of trauma in her life and suffers with severe anxiety. Despite it all she is resilient, brave, and a survivor. She acknowledges her trauma and helps others. Elijah is incredible. He is sweet, respectful, and supportive. They are perfect together. I also loved the inclusion of Amelia and Jennifer. They are the kind of friends that everyone needs. Please check the warnings before reading this book. I loved it and highly recommend it but it does touch on some very dark topics.

The story begins with Evie interviewing for a COO position at a top digital security firm. Despite facing constant sexism in the tech industry due to her appearance and age, she impresses the company's owner, Elijah Davis, with her confidence and MIT credentials. Elijah, who is the brother of Evie’s former mentor Jennifer, offers her the job on the spot. As they begin working together, a romantic tension quickly develops between them, complicated by the fact that they are professional colleagues and the trauma of her past.

What really stands out is how the book handles heavy themes. It doesn’t glamorize trauma or rush healing, and it takes its time exploring the psychological impact of fear, control, and vulnerability. The STEM setting feels purposeful rather than decorative, and the workplace environment adds realism to both the conflict and the romance.

This isn’t a fluffy read, but it’s a powerful one because if you enjoy dark romance with emotionally complex characters, a slow-burn relationship, and a story that isn’t afraid to sit with discomfort, Something Like Home is absolutely worth picking up. Just make sure to check the content warnings and go in prepared.

out of all of the books I’ve read of Emily’s this was the lowest amount of spice and it was actually really sweet. I was also surprised that this wasn’t RH or poly and it was just an insta-love work romance. if you’re like me don’t let the STEM part scare you off - it’s just in regards to women in a male dominated field that happens to be a part of STEM.

Evie & Elijah are probably the sweetest couple I’ve read in awhile. He has golden retriever energy and she’s fiercely independent and everything men can’t stand - smart AND beautiful. We have your creepy sexist stalker Andrew who really is a piece of work and honestly I was happy with how his story ended. I think the only thing I would say to readers is that this had a lot of good information about date rape and why it’s so important as a victim to come forward. anything after a “no” is rape. if you were coerced and experience body betrayal it’s still rape. HOWEVER… don’t be like Evie and antagonize your stalker. It rarely has a happy ending so yes fight as hard as you can and use Evie as a strong woman but be smart and follow law enforcement recommendations.

This book is dark in the way that lingers.

A Taste of Submission is not a cute, playful BDSM romance. It’s intense. It’s psychological. It’s about power, trauma, control, and the messy line between breaking and healing. The dynamic is heavy, deliberate, and very much rooted in dominance and submission—but layered with emotional damage and past wounds that refuse to stay buried.

The author doesn’t shy away from the hard topics—PTSD, sexual trauma, self-harm, gore, and morally complicated choices are all woven into the story. It’s gritty and unapologetic. If you like your romance wrapped in softness, this isn’t for you. But if you crave tension that feels sharp and a relationship that forces both characters to confront their demons? You’ll devour this.

The chemistry is intense.
The control is calculated.
The emotional unraveling? Chef’s kiss in the darkest way.

This is one of those books where submission isn’t weakness—it’s layered, complicated, and deeply psychological.

Check the trigger warnings. Seriously.
But if dark, damaged, dominant energy is your thing… this one will absolutely get under your skin.

Recieved this as an ARC. I didnt realize until a like a chapter in that the story seemed familiar. I had read this before when it was first published as Chance Encounters. I remember reading it then and loving the story line and characters. The only issue I had back then was is was very repetitive from Evie's perspective and it didn't flow too well. This time around it was so fluid and not repetitive, if there was need it wasn't word for word and was done for the purposes of disclosure.
Evie is such a strong young woman. She lost her family young and pushed herself to excel in school and follow in her parents footsteps. She is smart, strong, funny and angry lol. Elijah is hot, smart, caring and funny. These 2 mesh so well and fall fast. Jenn, Amelia and Nick are hilarious and great side characters that also rule this book.
I definitely recommend this book. It was been revamped but the story line and characters have not changed. It is fast paced but still contains the plot and gives it time for the characters to develop.

If you have never read an Emily Klepp book always read the trigger warnings. Your mental health matters. She touches on some rough topics but that is the thing I love most about her and her books. She shows representation. Many women and men will shy away from their abuse and trauma, but she creates stories about healing and learning to live with that trauma. As a survior it gives me great comfort to be able to read stories about healing and hope. Not enough people are willing to touch on the topics let alone show the healing and the growth. You don't have to live in your trauma. It is ok to heal and move on. There is hope and their is healing in these stories. I really enjoyed reading about Elijah and Evies story. Elijah gives Evie the opportunity to shine in a male driven enviornment. When others over looked her and treated her like a sex object he saw her and her potiential. Because of him she was able to tell her story and help her and others like her get justice. I highly recommend reading this story if you love a good trauma healing book.

Something like Home focuses on Evelyn and Elijah, both of whom are highly skilled in the cybersecurity industry. Evie has been rejected from numerous interviews despite her qualifications purely because of her gender. However when she has an interview at Elijah's company, everything changes for her.

I loved this book. I have a huge interest in cybersecurity so it was nice to see it mentioned and focused on in a book. Evie and Elijah go through a lot in this book, and it doesn't shy away from hard hitting topics and the lasting effects that trauma can have on a person and people around them. I would strongly advise that you look into the triggers before reading this as this is a heavy book, but one I feel is realistic and necessary. The side characters come in the form of Amelia, Jennifer and Nick, and the comic relief was much needed in certain scenes. I love the representation in this book too!

⚠️Check TW’s before reading⚠️

🖤 I probably sound like a broken record at this point, but check the trigger warning list before reading.

🖤 I knew from the very beginning that I was gonna love Elijah, and I was definitely correct. Elijah is the sweetest, and the way he was so patient with Evie through it all warmed my heart. I LOVE Emily’s side characters, cause they’re always so supportive and funny as fuck. We all need friends like Jenn and Amelia. Those who won’t fall for your bullshit, who will push you when you need to be pushed, and will also sit there with you when you just need a good cry and let those emotions out. Evie’s journey to her HEA with Elijah was a rough one, but in the end they got their much needed HEA and I loved it.

Cybersecurity-Boss/Employee Slowburn🔥

Evie Thompson is the new COO of CipherNet which is her dream job in cybersecurity. Working with the CEO Elijah Davis, they both discover there’s more than a mutual attraction. But being in the tech field comes at a high cost. This cybersecurity industry is filled full of sexism towards women and she is no exception. Evie is now facing a known stalker who is relentless in his pursuit to destroy her and CipherNet. With Elijah by her side they go behind the security walls to seek justice and keep Evie safe. While this story is detailed about the tech industry, dark topics and the characters, it moved at a slower pace. Some of the main plot points were more subtle than others. Dual point of views that had the same perspectives in similar scenes. This has some dark themes that are triggering. The spiciness is 🌶️🌶️. An eye opening experience into the tech industry that has a slow burn 🔥 effect.

Emily has written another amazing, powerful story. I totally devoured this book.
Loved how amazing Elijah is for Evie. Between Elijah and her friends she has a very strong support group. With everything that she is going through with Andrew.
This story is very well written. The characters are well developed and relatable. There is a lot of love and happiness through the darkness of being raped and the trauma it causes. This is a very emotional story.
And totally loved the happy news at the end.
Please check TW before reading. Otherwise enjoy this very amazing story. I highly recommend this book.
Emily is amazing. Writing stories that are taboo and subjects that are not always encouraged to speak freely about. But this story proves that when you let your voice be heard you help others heal as well.

I must start with:
⚠️ ⛔️ HEED YOUR TRIGGER WARNINGS ⛔️ ⚠️

This book is so very traumatic but also healing. And will wreck you!! I know it wrecked me!! I could not put this down. I am so happy how it turned out. Getting there was gripping and pulling me every which way. I absolutely HATE Andrew with every fiber of my being. That being said. I’m so glad what happened to him. Evie is resilient, strong, and empowering. What she endures is horrific to put it mildly. Bless Elijah. That man exudes every bit of touch her & d!e vibes but is a complete golden retriever type. This is the type of story that sits with you and doesn’t leave. I feel for every person in this story. Andrew hmmmmm how do I say this without spoiling? What he got wasn’t enough in my opinion.

Evie is a smart, capable woman trying to survive in a male dominated tech field, and the book, doesn’t shy away from the harassment and trauma she faces. Her strength makes her easy to root for, and Elijah’s steady, supportive presence brings a much needed softness to the story.

Their connection sparks quickly but never feels forced , especially in a narrative where trust and safety matter so much.

The side characters add warmth and humor, and the book handles heavy topics with care.

Emily does a great job at sucking us into her stories and making us love her characters 🥰🥰🥰

Emily Klepp tackles heavy themes with her signature emotional depth, so definitely check the trigger warnings before starting.

Evie has spent her career being overlooked in a male‑dominated field despite her exceptional skill. Elijah is the first to value her purely for her expertise, and their connection forms quickly. Evie’s past trauma complicates her relationships, and when it becomes clear she’s being targeted by two stalkers, the story shifts into a tense blend of fear, uncertainty, anger, and love.

The emotional core is strong, and the couple does get their happy ending.
My one critique: the story leans on repetition — certain thoughts and fears circle back a bit too often, which slowed the pacing.

Still, this is a heartfelt, meaningful read for anyone who can handle the triggers.

Something Like Home, written by Emily Klepp, is a dark romance with heavy triggers. It is a short read packed full of emotion.

The book follows Elijah and Ellie. Ellie is hired at a tech firm in a field notoriously male-dominated. Unfortunately, she is the target of men who believe they have the upper hand, and she suffers horrible trauma. With the help of Elijah and her friends, she takes matters into her own hands.

The book is both heartbreaking and hopeful. I loved how supportive people were and their willingness to fight back and regain their own narrative.

Thanks to Emily Klepp for gifting me an eARC of Something Like Home. I am leaving this review voluntarily. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book is a instalove, workplace romance. It focuses a lot on sexism in a male dominated field and how difficult it is for a woman in this field.

Elijah is the CEO of a cybersecurity business. He is on the hunt for a new COO. Enter Evie, a cybersecurity specialist. She applied for multiple jobs but kept being declined due to her gender, regardless of her experience or qualifications. When they meet, they hit it off but something dark and dangerous lingers on the periphery...

Emily is known for her dark, smutty romances but this one was not as smutty as we would expect from her. Elijah is very much the embodiment of a cinnamon roll MMC. It is dark though so be sure to read her warnings before reading this one.

I really want to say thank you for this opportunity to arc again for Emily. I truly love this story but there aren't many of her books I don't love. Evie and Elijah's relationship in this book was just a very beautiful thing. I loved both characters. I was addicted to this book and read it in one go. I loved how Elijah supported and respected Evie and all the women in the workplace. It was just a beautiful book. There were some workplace sexism and other things. That Was brought to attention but that is what i love about the author. She isn't scared to talk about hard topics, yet she does it with so much care and class in the mo9st tasteful way. I look forward to many more from her and her pseudo name.

This book was so good but also so different, Evie has experienced so much sexisim with in finding a job in the computing work sector as females shouldn't be so clued up apparently.Evie attends one interview where a guy is very odd and he tried to be little her and tell her she's only good for one thing. Jennifer who Evie had worked for previously helped set up a interview with her brother (jen's brother) but upon the interview Evie ends up seeing the sexist pig who tried to Hurt her but it doesnt stop there.

I really enjoyed this its not something id ever pick up personally so being able to read this had me hooked but then again it is Emily's books and they always have me hooked

This author doesn't disappoint. While this one isnt as dark as her others, it still is extremely realistic to how women are viewed out in the world. Evie is a strong, capable, and intelligent woman. What she had to go through, is disgusting yet so accurate. She's beautiful and thats all those exist pigs saw her as. A piece of meat and worth nothing but what she could give them. It made me so angry because this does happen every day. She's a woman in a man's field 😑 i love how quick Elijah was to believe her and fight for her. How quick everyone stood by her side and then stood by other survivors side! Made me love this book even more.

Another great book from Emily Klepp. Do read the trigger warnings, as this book covers some tougher subject matter. We are following Evie, as she interviews for a job after being turned down many times for being a woman. Finding out the guy she’s replacing is the last guy who turned her down and wanted to assault her. There was great tension as they navigated through the process with Andrew. Elijah and Evie had great chemistry and I enjoyed how he was with her, and how he was able to calm her down.

A kick butt FMC who works in a male-dominated field and she is much younger than her competition. She came in for an interview, which could change her life forever. This is told in the first-person perspective by both main characters, Evie and Elijah. No sooner than her job starts, she begins getting threatening messages. This is listed as dark workplace romance, but is also a thriller/suspense. It had unpredictable parts and was exciting. It is a standalone. I highly recommend this book. It is spicy, and it does have some possible triggers so check the triggerwarnings.

Though this book is fictional, just highlights that the glass ceiling in companies is still present regardless of a women's credentials and poor Evie was stressing over that before the interview. However, when Elijah was interviewing Evie, you could feel how present and invested in her he was, and what she had to say and offer the company. He made her feel safe. Though there was trauma within the story, I felt that the emphasis was on the development of Elijah and Evie's relationship. Enjoyable story but as always check the TWs to ensure your comfort level.

I will read anything this author writes! She writes in a manner that makes difficult traumatic experiences seem almost manageable. She’s not afraid to be brutally honest with her readers about the experience and the trauma from the aftermath. I love how she incorporated the stem aspect into this one , it is a male dominated world and she handled Evies experiences in it masterfully. I love me some spice and this one was a bit lower on the spice level than her fans are used to but it was still a great read. The ending for the POS who we shall not name , was perfection and deserved.

Evie and Elijah are one of my favorite couples! They’re both highly intelligent and among the top in their fields. I love how respectful and kind Elijah is! He’s amazing. *happy sigh*

Evie has been through some horrible stuff, but has an amazing support system and people that love her. So much emotion in this book, so much trauma, but so much healing and moving on with a man worthy of her love that treats her like the queen she is.
