Son of a Bite: A Romantasy

“No one,” Alobaz said, “no one feeds her but me.”
He could have threatened to roast Sora on a spit of Fuerin fire and she would have been less terrified.
“I’ll never feed from you,” she said, infusing all the venom within her into her glare. “Never. I’ll starve first.”
“Then prepare to be hungry.”

Once the most formidable vampire of the D’Arco Dynasty, Soravelle Davana slumbers in a death-like sleep, imprisoned in a sarcophagus deep beneath the sea. After centuries, she finally awakens in horrific agony when an old enemy murders her twin brother.

With no family left, she has nothing to live for but vengeance. She vows to destroy her brother’s killer—Alobaz “Baz” Hawxley. He’s a warmonger and a murderer; a vicious, dangerously gorgeous monster. When Sora sneaks into her family’s usurped castle in disguise to murder him, her knife misses the mark and he locks her in the dungeons of her own ancestral home.

Baz is the rebirthed son of the emperor and the most fearsome general the world has ever known. When he captures Sora, a cunning assassin of legendary power and striking beauty, he realizes the tales don’t do her justice. Baz is sure the temptress is a viper, ready to strike, and Sora is off-limits, thrice over. He is only allowed to touch her if it’s to kill her.

As her need for blood is only satiated by him, their desire grows into an undeniable force. Blood may be thicker than water, but temptation has never been more deadly. When vengeance and passion collide, will the world survive the destruction?

From bestselling author Lucía Ashta comes Son of a Bite, a fresh Gothic romantasy retelling of Romeo and Juliet teeming with strange magical creatures, vindictive sentient shadows, and the vampire-fae who resist destined love as if it itself were the enemy.

* Please Son of a Bite is a full-length novel with a story arc that continues with additional books in the Vampire Vendetta series, which contains graphic descriptions suitable for a mature audience.“The author’s lush, dark blend of romance and gothic fantasy explores unwanted desire while sharpening its fangs on themes of vengeance, power, and political intrigue... Morally complex characters elevate this gothic romantasy above standard enemies-to-lovers fare.” - Kirkus Reviews

Son of a Bite by Lucía Ashta is the first installment in her Vampire Vendetta series, released in early 2026. This novel marks a pivot for Ashta into the "Gothic Romantasy" subgenre, blending her signature paranormal elements with a darker, more atmospheric tone.

This enemy to lover, Romeo and Juliet retailing, is a bit darker romance for Ashta and I am here for it.

Sora, bad a$$ assassin, is awaking from a sleep she never saw coming.
Baz, the start of the story I would say big D head. But his story comes around.

What's love got to do with it. Was in my head when they was trying to fight the attraction they have for each other.

Your need to knows are: fast passed, banter you are going to love, we got steam!! Steam to make you blush. This is a darker toned romance you might not be used to. Grab your panties and hang on.

Romeo and Juliet retelling?, yes please! 🔥
Ok tbh it was a bit hard to get into this book, but then, wow, I couldn't stop!
The plot is so twisted and dark, great world building, amazing fae-vampire characters... oh and a sentient? castle... what more could you ask for? 😍
The chemistry between the MC was off the charts 🥵🫠 and the side characters, so likeable; that castle, I need to know more about it, why it does what it does, I like it already (be careful of whay you say about it/her 🫣🤐).
After what is revealed in the last chapter (and what is not) and that cliffy, I NEED to know what the h3ll is going on!... what a great book! ❤️

It took some effort for me to really get into this book... I found myself frustrated but the effort was worth it.
The dynamic with Sora and her family as well as understanding the political climate and the whose who of where's where was a lot to absorb.
I found Baz and his band of merry people quite entertaining and I liked him, a feat made easier by understanding his internal thought process. Marina is also such a sweet potato and her loyalty and love for Sora is so beautiful!

If you want me to be happy, give me a Vampire book and by the end of this book I wanted Baz to rule the world! He's wonderful!

This was a fun and quick read! The vampires with special powers and vengeance driving them give this one a gothic vibe. Sora and Baz are destined to be enemies but have an unexplainable draw to each other. The castle was awesome and I’m hoping it will cause more mayhem. I have so many questions and can’t wait for book 2!

This book gives dark vibes meets vampire/fae with a vendetta. This book gives a lot to unpack, the lost years Sora suffers seems minor in comparison to the loss of her *beep* through this journey. Baz is delightfully delicious in his morally grey attire. I devoured this book with glee. I will note, in true fashion, Lucia, left a cliffy.
